Oh really? It doesn't say "sitting in obedience" or "lying around in obedience'. Look carefully at the words chosen (they are there for a reason) and the blessings attached. These are active statements specifically having to do with physical exertion. It isn't a blessing of having a thin attractive appearance now is it?just me wrote:Tobin wrote:And when these verses were given were "walking in obedience" and the promise to be able to run and not be weary looked upon as advice to engage in daily exercise programs? I think not. You are reaching.

So, these words should all be taken literally? To walk in obedience actually is just a command to walk? Are you sure about that?
What about people who are unable to use their legs?
Also, why are so many WoW abiding members unable to walk and not be weary or run and not faint? How come this literal promise is not manifest to them?
Since when do people who walk in obedience have the promise of a "thin attractive" appearance? Laugh my ass off. I've never in my life heard that interpretation.
What is the literal meaning of the "destroying angel" passing them by?

It sure is more convincing than stating "wine" = "grape juice". The real words 'walk' and 'run' are used in close proximity to one another. The phrase "walk in obedience" is not a passive statement or command. It illicits action - sojourning and being active. The blessing that follows along those exact lines paralleling the command and reinforces the meaning and imagery of this statement. As I said, these words were not selected at random.just me wrote:So, these words should all be taken literally? To walk in obedience actually is just a command to walk? Are you sure about that?

Actually, that is a non-sequitur. IF the WoW is purely about what we are to consume and use, and not actively do, then why have this effect was what I was pointing out to you. IF that is what the Lord meant, the cause "eating properly" would have the effect (or blessing) of a "thin and attractive appearance" instead.just me wrote:Since when do people who walk in obedience have the promise of a "thin attractive" appearance? Ask Whitney Houston. That is the destroying angel in full effect.just me wrote:What is the literal meaning of the "destroying angel" passing them by?

Yeah, not likely.
I am actually a bit confused by those who look to the text of Sec. 89. The text there has little to do with the "Word of Wisdom" rules as currently enforced in the LDS church.

Tobin, why are the promises in the WoW not made sure? Why are so many WoW followers unable to walk and not be weary, run and not faint and why does the destroying angel get so many of them?

Many of the blessings you receive from God are just cause and effect. If you eat properly and exercise, it is natural to assume you'll run and not faint (precluding other conditions that might cause you to faint or not run at all). The Lord works in reasonable degrees like this where the blessing is usually just the result of the action you took by following the guidance the Lord gives you. There is no magic here.just me wrote:Tobin, why are the promises in the WoW not made sure? 18 And all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, ashall receive bhealth in their navel and marrow to their bones;
19 And shall afind bwisdom and great ctreasures of dknowledge, even hidden treasures;
20 And shall arun and not be bweary, and shall walk and not faint.
21 And I, the Lord, give unto them a promise, that the adestroying angel shall bpass by them, as the children of Israel, and not slay them. Amen.
Okay, so from what I can see the members of the church get no extra blessings from keeping the WoW.
The "destroying angel" doesn't exist.
LDS have no more or less health in their naval than the regular population. They have the same amount of marrow in their bones.
There are no secret treasures of knowledge being brought forth by them.
They are just as weary and faint just as often as anyone else.
If there are studies that show otherwise, I am happy to look at them.

Exactly. I do not believe in magic. Most things are a natural consequence of what you do and should be as you would expect.just me wrote:Tobin wrote:Many of the blessings you receive from God are just cause and effect. As I stated below, I don't believe in magic. These are a natural result of avoiding the deadly consequences of bad habits, not eating properly nor exercising. No magic involved.just me wrote:18 And all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, ashall receive bhealth in their navel and marrow to their bones;
