SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was hit by a bus while serving in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
In a statement, LDS Church spokesman Scott Trotter said:
Elder Britten Steven Schenk, 20, from Hyde Park, Utah serving in the Brazil Sao Paulo East mission, was struck by a bus on 16 March 2012 while waiting on the sidewalk to cross the street. He underwent emergency neurosurgery to relieve the swelling of the brain. Elder Schenk’s parents have flown to Brazil to consult with doctors and to be with their son at this critical time. Our prayers are with him, his family and friends.
Schenk's family has been updating Elder Schenk's status and their parent's travels during their ordeal.
Elder Schenk's family started a blog to update friends and relatives. They wrote that local church leaders came to their home over the weekend to inform them that Britten had been hit by a bus, that he had severe head injuries and that "the outlook did not look good."
The family also blogged that Britten's doctors said he was in a medically-induced coma and on a breathing machine.
On Sunday, a family member blogged:
"He is still in very serious condition but the Doctors are encouraged from last night. They feel that there is hope for his future."
Another family blog said that doctor's initially gave Elder Schenk a "40% chance of survival."
I hope he recovers.
