I am sure it looks that way to you. I see many things written in scripture as historical narrative and not the Word of God. It is up to us to sort it all out. Take Peter for instance I think that he was doing his own thing for most of his life before he came to be led by the Holy Ghost. So some of those things he did before he aged and figured out that he should give up his will and do the will of the Father were in error. Those who take what Peter did as the truth of God are led down a false path.

It is all very complicated. But easily sorted out with the help of the Holy Ghost.

So I guess the question must be how does one tell which Church is the true Church?

I am sure that if you follow your heart no matter what Church you go to it will be accounted as a good work. I think Paul is the best example. Here he was killing Apostles and forming mobs for stoning. Then traveling to Damascus to kill some more. But of course his life changed. But the important thing is he was in unbelief to the Gospel. But he was judged on what he did believe. So we can be in error but if we believe and act on our faith we will be judged on that work. If you doubt what I say then read the scriptures.

Now having said that, it is best to follow God's Word and God's Church and His doctrines. I have made my choice and I have good reasons for doing so. Those reasons are questioned by some but their issues stem from a lack of understanding. And for the most part that lack of understanding is linked to a love of the world. So be it.
