That really shook up a member on another blog, but I told him that prophets and apostles weren't perfect, but that God would right the ship eventually as he did with Nathan when Nathan told David to build a temple, and God had to correct him about that. However, that was done much faster since God did not want David to have a hand in building the temple at all.

Hmmm...so for a period of time the Prophet BY led the Church astray and, due to their ongoing imperfection, Prophets can lead us astray today? Doesn't sound like what I was taught...

Peter lad the church astray for a while as he sided with the Jews in not wanting the uncircumsized gentiles to be baptized, and finally Paul"withstood him to his face." Later, Peter received a vision confirming that Paul was right. God will always eventually right the ship.

First of all, I would like to state as a matter of record that the prophet Brigham Young did not believe in the so-called Adam-God theory that has been attributed to him. He has made numerous statements to the contrary and I will just quote one of them here:

"Some say, "We are the children of Adam and Eve." So we are, and they are the children of our Heavenly Father. We are all the children of Adam and Eve, and they and we are the offspring of Him who dwells in the heavens, the highest Intelligence that dwells anywhere that we have any knowledge of." (JD 13:311. See alsoJD 1:238, 10:231, and 13:309.)

Yes, Brigham Young did believe the Adam-God Theory that has been attributed to him.

And your BY quote does not contradict the Adam-God Theory.

You are making the mistake most thoroughly modern Mormons make--thinking in two dimensions.

Brigham Young thought in three.

gdemetz wrote:BC, is it just me, or can other people get the same meaning that I do when I read the statement of Brigham Young of August 28,1852 that so many critics have condemned him for? To me, Brigham Young is clearly speaking of future "Adam's" and "Eve's" that will go to some future world and eat and drink of the fruits of the "garden" there to produce physical tabernacles for the first parents of that world!

Think about this for a minute, if you would.

BY taught resurrected beings from this world will become Adams and Eves to a future world and produce physical tabernacles, not just for the spirit children of some unnamed "first parents of that world," but for the spirits that they themselves begot in the spirit prior to becoming Adams and Eves.

That is what Brigham Young taught.

You are doing fuzzy theology here.

Brigham Young was precise.

Now, the $64 question is, "Who stands in relation to this world as we will stand in relation to our future world?"

In other words, Brigham Young taught that future worlds will each have their own personal God, not only of the spirit bodies of the inhabitants, but also the physical bodies.

"Who, then, is the God of this one world on which we now live, both of the spirit bodies as well as the physical bodies?"

I really can't make this any plainer.

And neither could Brigham.

All the Best!

gdemetz wrote: Do you think Brigham Young is a complete idiot, who would one day teach that Adam, as well as all of us are the offspring of our Heavenly Father as I have plainly quoted, and the next day state that Adam is our Heavenly Father?!? That assumption is ridiculous!!!

Let me paint this in primary colors.

Brigham Young taught that Adam was the son of Elohim, who lived in mortality on a prior world with millions of others of Elohim's kids.

Adam was exalted and, with his wife (wives), begot millions of spirit children and created this world for his children to live on in their mortal probation.

Adam and his wife then came to the Garden of Eden in this world and began the process of providing physical tabernacles for their spirit children.

Adam is the offspring of Elohim.

Because Adam is the offspring of Elohim, we are also the offspring of Elohim, just one generations removed.

You continue to think in two dimensions, even though the world in which we live tells us we have not only fathers, but grandfathers, great-grandfathers, and so on.

Joseph Smith introduced the concept that our heavenly relationships fall into the same category (in his last recorded sermon in Nauvoo in the grove); that there is a God above our God and so on; an eternal recension of gods.

Brigham Young built on that idea.

You ignore it.

You should have read my March 23, 10:59 AM post before you spouted off so much! I retracted my former statements! So, let me explain it to you simply!

1) Joseph Smith restored the one true church which the prophet Daniel plainly stated would never be destroyed of left to other people.

2) Joseph Smith named this one true church by revelation, and it was named The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

3) Brigham Young had personal beliefs which were part of the so-called Adam-God theory and were not true revelations from God, just as Peter had about the gentiles being circumsized before baptism, before the Lord corrected him. Those false beliefs were that God became "uncelestialized" and "deresurrected." Concerning that teaching, President Wilford Woodruff drafted a letter which was written by Joseph F.Smith, and it stated:

"President Young no doubt expressed his personal opinion or views upon the subject. What he said was not given as revelation or commandment from the Lord. The doctrine was never submitted to the councils of the priesthood nor to the church for approval or ratification, and was never formally or otherwise accepted by the church. It is therefore in no sense binding upon the church."

4) Many prophets and apostles of the church have denounced this false doctrine as ("3 deminsional") heresy! Many statements were made such as this one by Spencer W. Kimball:

"We warn you against the dissemination of doctrines which are not according to the scriptures and which are alleged to have been taught by some of the general authorities of past generations. Such for instance is the Adam-God theory. We denounce that theory and hope that everyone will be cautioned against this and other kinds of false doctrine."

5) The "Brighamites" or other sects which have broken off from the true church and believe this false doctrine, have no leg to stand on since the revelation of even the naming of the true church has been given as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and this one true church has been clearly prophesied about as never going into apostasy again as before!

6) The members in the Church of Jesus Christ are going into personal apostasy if they believe this false heresy since our leaders have on many occasions declared this doctrine to be a false heresy!

"And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." John 17:3
