No three degrees of Glory in 1 Cor 15

Post by _Mittens »

1 Corinthians 15:
38 But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body.
39 All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds.
40 There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another.
41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory.
42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption:
43 It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power:
44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

A The Earthy or terrestrial
Corruption
Dishonor
Weakness
Natural body

Would any of these words be referring to a heaven ? corruption, dishonor, weakness, natural body

B the heavenly or celestial

incorruption
In glory
raised in power
spiritual body

The Exegesis of this passage

Whoopsie, someone didn't read 1 Corinthians 15:41 very carefully.

There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory.

So your saying threre's more than three heavens :question: the sun, moon, stars plus different degrees in the stars :question:

sorry but Exegesis and context is important

I'm just reading the text as it states it. Apparently there are three major classifications (Sun, moon, stars), but each will have a different glory than another (everyone will be unique), just as there are many different stars in the sky. You really should try to understand the scriptures sometime. They are pretty clear if you put even the smallest of effort into it.

which is why it is so weird that you ignore both.

However, you should likely not hang your hat on 1 Cor 15....
look at the hooks available with:
The testament of Levi clearly speaks of three degrees
The early writing of the Apocalypse of Paul even has three degrees of heaven (most, if not all, of the Pseudepigrapha does)
The testament
Matthew 13:8 and 13:23 obviously concludes a "tiered" system
Matthew 16:7 obviously concludes a "tiered" system
Historically there is a wealth upon wealth of scholarly and theological writings that cross over Jewish, Protestant and Catholic traditions that affirm a hierarchy of "heavens"
The early writing of the Apocalypse of Paul even has three degrees of heaven

and on and on and on
The facts and the history prove that the original christian church believed in a "three degree" heaven...as is proved by competent and sincere "exegesis and context"

what would be more interesting would be for you to try and prove that there is not three (or more) degrees

the reveal occurred when Mittens used the term "Exegesis"...likely without ever looking it up for its meaning

The Context is not different heavens but our mortal body juxtopose our heavenly body, the Book of Mormon doesn't mention three degrees of glory and is considered to have the fullness of the gospel

Pearl Of Great Price
34 He said there was a abook deposited, written upon gold plates, giving an account of the former inhabitants of this continent, and the source from whence they sprang. He also said that the fulness of the everlasting Gospel was contained in it, as delivered by the Savior to the ancient inhabitants;

Our revelations say that the Book of Mormon contains the fullness of Gospel. { D&C 20:9, 27:5. 42:12, 135:3 } This is true in the sense that Book of Mormon is a record of God's dealings with a people who had the fulness of the gospel and therefore the laws and priciples leading to the highest salvation are found recorded in that book.
The fullness consists in those laws, doctrines, ordnances, powers, and authorities needed to enable men to gain the fullness of salvation. Mormon Doctrine page 333

D&C 20:
9 Which contains a record of a fallen people, and the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles and to the Jews also;

D&C 27:
5 Behold, this is wisdom in me; wherefore, marvel not, for the hour cometh that I will drink of the fruit of the vine with you on the earth, and with Moroni, whom I have sent unto you to reveal the Book of Mormon, containing the fulness of my everlasting gospel, to whom I have committed the keys of the record of the stick of Ephraim;

D&C 42:
12 And again, the elders, priests and teachers of this church shall teach the principles of my gospel, which are in the Bible and the Book of Mormon, in the which is the fulness of the gospel.

D&C 135:
3 Joseph Smith, the Prophet and Seer of the Lord, has done more, save Jesus only, for the salvation of men in this world, than any other man that ever lived in it. In the short space of twenty years, he has brought forth the Book of Mormon, which he translated by the gift and power of God, and has been the means of publishing it on two continents; has sent the fulness of the everlasting gospel, which it contained, to the four quarters of the earth;

Again, you are aren't helping your case. As subgenius pointed out, it is up to you to demonstrate that the idea of 3 classifications is purely a Mormon invention and interpretation of the Bible here. So far, you have only proven that you have no case from the quotation in the Bible you have provided. And the Book of Mormon isn't going to help you. If you accept the Book of Mormon, you'll also have to accept the Mormon position of 3 major classifications because that is clearly taught by them.

Four classifications here
1 Cor 15:

39 All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of animals, another of fish, and another of birds

Just four or more here

41 There is one glory of the sun, another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for one star differs from another star in glory.

Good, then we are all in agreement, there is definitely more than one "degree" of heaven.
now someone get a calling for Mittens
