What's wrong with the TRUTH ?

Post by _Mittens »

“I have a hard time with historians... because they idolize the truth. The truth is not uplifting; it destroys. Historians should tell only that part of the truth that is inspiring and uplifting.”
- Apostle Boyd K. Packer, as related by D. Michael Quinn, “Pillars of My Faith,” talk delivered at Sunstone Symposium, Salt Lake City, August 19, 1994

You can't handle the truth...

I can handle the Truth from the Real Prophet, High Priest and Apostle

Hebrews 1
1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son
, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

Hebrews 3
1 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;
Justice = Getting what you deserve
Mercy = Not getting what you deserve
Grace = Getting what you can never deserve

“When Elder Packer interviewed me as a prospective member of Brigham Young University’s faculty in 1976, he explained: ‘I have a hard time with historians because they idolize the truth. The truth is not uplifting; it destroys. I could tell most of the secretaries in the church office building because that they are ugly and fat. That would be the truth, but it would hurt and destroy them. Historians should tell only that part of the truth that is inspiring and uplifting.’”

- D. Michael Quinn, “On Being a Mormon Historian (and Its Aftermath),” in George D. Smith, ed., Faithful History: Essays on Writing Mormon History, 1992, p. 76

Please, provide actual reference to Boyd Packer - D. Michale Quinn tells in a 1995 issue of Sunstone that it was during an interview that Packer spoke these words, which make them hearsay and make you, once again, less than credible and perhaps Mr. Quinn as well.
Your reference above is incorrect (er...not proven as the truth)

Hehe. In Mittens world, Mormons must believe every comment and opinion that a Mormon leader has ever uttered. We aren't allowed to think for ourselves, use reason, understand it in context with the scriptures and what others have said, and oh yes - even ask God ourselves if we need some inspiration about it and form our own views.

so if i understand you correctly, every statement that's ever been attributed to anyone in any newspaper, magazine, or book every published in history -- unless they were written from first person -- is just hearsay and can be freely ignored.

when it comes to a statement being considered as "factual" or "accurate" as presented by someone who is hostile toward the individual(s) then yes.
If i posted that i had a conversation with Richard Dawkins and he told me that he actually believes in God but just wanted to sell a lot of books...should we consider that as truth? especially if i put it forth as a criticism of Dawkins and/or atheism?
