It would be interesting to see what would happen if the Church really did print them up and include them in the next edition and publication of the quadruple combination.
As long as the Book of Abraham is accepted as scripture and the Facsimiles are canonized that will not happened, but that does not prevent some enterprising individual(s) from slipping copies of the side by side comparisons into unattended scriptures at Church on Sundays or at Seminary.

"Any over-ritualized religion since the dawn of time can make its priests say yes, we know, it is rotten, and hard luck, but just do as we say, keep at the ritual, stick it out, give us your money and you'll end up with the angels in heaven for evermore."
"The Canopic jars" - All in all, the names correlate to the exact correct regional directions of which are depicted on the HEADS of the jars. This criticism is similar to an Egyptologist stating that it is a simple condiment jar while Joseph Smith claims its ketchup.
all in all, since the "modern egyptological interpretation" is sourced from www.bookofabraham.com i consider the three images to be suspect and obviously bias...any peer review would discount the whole thing as junk science.....but you gotta love the determination! (and the scurrying about) unfortunately the Book of Abraham ain't no kinda linchpin nor is it even a straw on the camel's back

I don't understand why they keep printing these fascimiles. The Church has been more than happy to correct problems in the Book of Mormon itself. They should simply state the Book of Abraham is an inspired work revealing the original writings of Abraham. It is not and never was a translation of Egyptian papyri written over a thousand years later. They simply have nothing to do with the Book of Abraham and if they ever did have anything to do with it, those references disappeared long ago and were substituted by Egyptian myths. It doesn't take much thinking to conclude this. Why would the Egyptians (pagans) have any interest in relating a tale about Abraham and a foreign God? I'm shocked and amazed that Mormon apologists and prophets of the Church would have believed anything different.
And it makes no sense what-so-ever. Joseph Smith was not an Egyptologist. He certainly couldn't read Egyptian Hieroglyphics (why would he be able to?!?). He simply had no idea what he was looking at. If he did, then he should have stated it clearly and carefully. And anything the Lord would have told him would have had to do with restoring accounts about interactions with God - not some other pagan mythos contained in these papyri.

I think the answer is simple Tobin, for most other people an admission that J.S. could not translate Egyptian is also an admission that Book of Mormon is a 19th century production.

How do we know that these translations were not a highly prophetic ruse on the part of Joseph Smith, to test the faithfullness and explanative prowess of future FARMS, and to assist Paul Osbourn to come to grips with his inner self?

I'm sure you're right about that.
No precept or claim is more likely to be false than one that can only be supported by invoking the claim of Divine authority for it--no matter who or what claims such authority.
