Numbers 10:1-36 The Lord tells Moses to have manufactured two trumpets of hammered silver for calling the community to assemble and for signaling the breaking of camp. When both are blown, everyone must gather before the entrance of the Tabernacle. If only one trumpet is blown, then only the leaders—the heads of the clans of Israel—must present themselves to Moses. When sounding the signal to move on, the tribes camped on the east side of the Tabernacle must break camp and move forward. When sounding the signal a second time, the tribes camped on the south will follow. They must sound short blasts as the signal for moving on. But when calling the people to an assembly, blow the trumpets with a different signal. Only the priests are allowed to blow the trumpets. This is a permanent law for Israel from generation to generation. When Israel arrives in their own land and go to war against enemies who attack, sound the alarm with the trumpets. The Lord God will remember and rescue them from your enemies. Blow the trumpets in times of gladness, too, sounding them at annual festivals and at the beginning of each month. And blow the trumpets over burnt offerings and peace offerings. The trumpets will remind the Lord God of his covenant. In the second year after Israel’s departure from Egypt—on the twentieth day of the second month —the cloud lifted from the Tabernacle of the Covenant. So the Israelites set out from the wilderness of Sinai and traveled on from place to place until the cloud stopped in the wilderness of Paran. When the people set out for the first time, following the instructions the Lord had given through Moses, Judah’s troops led the way. They marched behind their banner, and their leader was Nahshon son of Amminadab. They were joined by the troops of the tribe of Issachar, led by Nethanel son of Zuar, and the troops of the tribe of Zebulun, led by Eliab son of Helon.The Tabernacle was taken down, and the Gershonite and Merarite divisions of the Levites were next in the line of march, carrying the Tabernacle with them. Reuben’s troops went next, marching behind their banner. Their leader was Elizur son of Shedeur. They were joined by the troops of the tribe of Simeon, led by Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai, and the troops of the tribe of Gad, led by Eliasaph son of Deuel. Next came the Kohathite division of the Levites, carrying the sacred objects from the Tabernacle. Before they arrived at the next camp, the Tabernacle would already be set up at its new location. Ephraim’s troops went next, marching behind their banner. Their leader was Elishama son of Ammihud. They were joined by the troops of the tribe of Manasseh, led by Gamaliel son of Pedahzur, and the troops of the tribe of Benjamin, led by Abidan son of Gideoni. Dan’s troops went last, marching behind their banner and serving as the rear guard for all the tribal camps. Their leader was Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai. They were joined by the troops of the tribe of Asher, led by Pagiel son of Ocran, 27 and the troops of the tribe of Naphtali, led by Ahira son of Enan. One day Moses said to his brother-in-law, Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite, "We are on our way to the place the Lord promised us, for he said, ‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us and we will treat you well, for the Lord has promised wonderful blessings for Israel!” But Hobab replied, that he will not go but must return to his own land and family. Moses pleaded. for him not to leave because he knew the places in the wilderness where they should camp. Come, be our guide and blessing from God will be shared. They marched for three days after leaving the mountain of the Lord, with the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant moving ahead of them to show them where to stop and rest. As they moved on each day, the cloud of the Lord hovered over them. And whenever the Ark set out, Moses would shout, “Arise, O Lord, and let your enemies scatter!" And when the Ark was set down, he would say, “Return, O Lord, to the countless thousands of Israel!”

1 And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,

2 `Make to thee two trumpets of silver; beaten work thou dost make them, and they have been to thee for the convocation of the company, and for the journeying of the camps;

3 and they have blown with them, and all the company have met together unto thee, unto the opening of the tent of meeting.

4 And if with one they blow, then have the princes, heads of the thousands of Israel, met together unto thee;

5 `And ye have blown -- a shout, and the camps which are encamping eastward have journeyed.

11 And it cometh to pass -- in the second year, in the second month, in the twentieth of the month -- the cloud hath gone up from off the tabernacle of the testimony,

12 and the sons of Israel journey in their journeyings from the wilderness of Sinai, and the cloud doth tabernacle in the wilderness of Paran;

13 and they journey at first, by the command of Jehovah, in the hand of Moses.

14 And the standard of the camp of the sons of Judah journeyeth in the first [place], by their hosts, and over its host [is] Nahshon son of Amminadab.

30 And he saith unto him, `I do not go; but unto my land and unto my kindred do I go.'

31 And he saith, `I pray thee, forsake us not, because thou hast known our encamping in the wilderness, and thou hast been to us for eyes;

32 and it hath come to pass when thou goest with us, yea, it hath come to pass -- that good which Jehovah doth kindly with us -- it we have done kindly to thee.'

33 And they journey from the mount of Jehovah a journey of three days; and the ark of the covenant of Jehovah is journeying before them the journey of three days, to spy out for them a resting-place;

34 and the cloud of Jehovah [is] on them by day, in their journeying from the camp.

35 And it cometh to pass in the journeying of the ark, that Moses saith, `Rise, O Jehovah, and Thine enemies are scattered, and those hating Thee flee from Thy presence.'

36 And in its resting he saith, `Return, O Jehovah, [to] the myriads, the thousands of Israel.'

Numbers 11:1-35 Soon the people began to complain about hardship, and the Lord heard everything they said. And the Lord’s anger blazed against them, and he sent fire to rage among them, and he destroyed some of the people in the outskirts of the camp. Then the people screamed to Moses for help, and when he prayed to the Lord, the fire stopped. After that, the area was known as the place of burning.Then foreign rabble who were traveling with the Israelites began to crave the good things of Egypt. And the people of Israel also began to complain for meat. They remembered the fish that they used to eat for free in Egypt. And all the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic they wanted. But now our appetites are gone. All they ever see is manna. The manna looked like small coriander seeds, and it was pale yellow like gum resin. The people would go out and gather it from the ground. They made flour by grinding it with hand mills or pounding it in mortars. Then they boiled it in a pot and made it into flat cakes. These cakes tasted like pastries baked with olive oil. The manna came down on the camp with the dew during the night. Moses heard all the families standing in the doorways of their tents whining, and the Lord became extremely angry. Moses was also very aggravated. And Moses asked the Lord, why he was treating him so harshly? Moses asks for mercy. Moses says, "What did I do to deserve the burden of all these people? Did I give birth to them? Did I bring them into the world? Why did you tell me to carry them in my arms like a mother carries a nursing baby? How can I carry them to the land you swore to give their ancestors? Where am I supposed to get meat for all these people? They keep whining to me, saying, ‘Give us meat to eat!’ I can’t carry all these people by myself! The load is far too heavy! If this is how you intend to treat me, just go ahead and kill me. Do me a favor and spare me this misery!”
The Lord tells Moses to gather seventy men who are recognized as elders and leaders of Israel. Bring them to the Tabernacle. God will come down and talk to Moses there. God will take some of the Spirit that is upon Moses, and put the Spirit upon them also. They will bear the burden of the people, so Moses will not have to carry it alone. Now the Lord will give meat, and they will have to eat it for a whole month until they gag and are sick of it. For they have rejected the Lord, who is here among them, and they have whined to GOD, saying, “Why did we ever leave Egypt?” Moses responded to the Lord that there are 600,000 foot soldiers there. Even if Israel butchered all flocks and herds, would that satisfy them? Even if they caught all the fish in the sea, would that be enough? The Lord said to Moses, “Has my arm lost its power? Now you will see whether or not my word comes true!” So Moses went out and reported the Lord’s words to the people. He gathered the seventy elders and stationed them around the Tabernacle. And the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to Moses. Then he gave the seventy elders the same Spirit that was upon Moses. And when the Spirit rested upon them, they prophesied. But this never happened again. Two men, Eldad and Medad, had stayed behind in the camp. They were listed among the elders, but they had not gone out to the Tabernacle. Yet the Spirit rested upon them as well, so they prophesied there in the camp. A young man ran and reported to Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp!” Joshua son of Nun, who had been Moses’ assistant since his youth, protested, “Moses, my master, make them stop!” But Moses replied, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit upon them all!” Moses returned to the camp with the elders of Israel. Now the Lord sent a wind that brought quail from the sea and let them fall all around the camp. For miles in every direction there were quail flying about three feet above the ground. So the people went out and caught quail all that day and throughout the night and all the next day, too. No one gathered less than fifty bushels! They spread the quail all around the camp to dry. But while they were gorging themselves on the meat—while it was still in their mouths—the anger of the Lord blazed against the people, and he struck them with a severe plague. So that place was called graves of gluttony because there they buried the people who had craved meat from Egypt. From Kibroth-hattaavah the Israelites traveled to Hazeroth and remained for some time.

13 Whence have I flesh to give to all this people? for they weep unto me, saying, Give to us flesh, and we eat.

Numbers 12:1-16 While they were at Hazeroth, Miriam and Aaron criticized Moses because he had married a Cushite woman.They said, “Has the Lord spoken only through Moses? Hasn’t he spoken through us, too?” But the Lord heard them. (Moses was very humble—more humble than any other person.) So keep her outside the camp for seven days, and after that she may be accepted back.” So Miriam was kept outside the camp for seven days, and the people waited until she was brought back before they traveled again. 16 Then they left Hazeroth and camped in the wilderness of Paran.

1 And Miriam speaketh -- Aaron also -- against Moses concerning the circumstance of the Cushite woman whom he had taken: for a Cushite woman he had taken;

2 and they say, `Only by Moses hath Jehovah spoken? also by us hath he not spoken?' and Jehovah heareth.

3 And the man Moses [is] very humble, more than any of the men who [are] on the face of the ground.

4 And Jehovah saith suddenly unto Moses, and unto Aaron, and unto Miriam, `Come out ye three unto the tent of meeting;' and they three come out.

5 And Jehovah cometh down in the pillar of the cloud, and standeth at the opening of the tent, and calleth Aaron and Miriam, and they come out both of them.

6 And He saith, `Hear, I pray you, My words: If your prophet is of Jehovah -- in an appearance unto him I make Myself known; in a dream I speak with him;

7 not so My servant Moses; in all My house he [is] stedfast;

8 mouth unto mouth I speak with him, and [by] an appearance, and not in riddles; and the form of Jehovah he beholdeth attentively; and wherefore have ye not been afraid to speak against My servant -- against Moses?'

9 And the anger of Jehovah burneth against them, and He goeth on,

10 and the cloud hath turned aside from off the tent, and lo, Miriam [is] leprous as snow; and Aaron turneth unto Miriam, and lo, leprous!

11 And Aaron saith unto Moses, `O, my lord, I pray thee, lay not upon us sin [in] which we have been foolish, and [in] which we have sinned;

12 let her not, I pray thee, be as [one] dead, when in his coming out from the womb of his mother -- the half of his flesh is consumed.'

13 And Moses crieth unto Jehovah, saying, `O God, I pray Thee, give, I pray Thee, healing to her.'

14 And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `And her father had but spat in her face -- is she not ashamed seven days? she is shut out seven days at the outside of the camp, and afterwards she is gathered.'

15 And Miriam is shut out at the outside of the camp seven days, and the people hath not journeyed till Miriam is gathered;

16 and afterwards have the people journeyed from Hazeroth, and they encamp in the wilderness of Paran.
