Why, in heavens name, isn't the Church itself officially studying why members leave/stop attending?

I assume you may mean officially as going public with any study they probably have done. Perhaps they don't like the results and think it might be less then faith promoting.

This is definitely a possibility. The Church is research happy.

My own view is that such a study would not be instigated by official Mormon Church channels. Mostly because I do not believe the Mormon Church has the ability to honestly form the kinds of questions that that would give them accurate responses that they could assess and properly interpret. My experience is that they would have trouble processing any conclusions from such a study that did not fit their preconceived notions of why people leave.... that leavers have committed a sin...want to sin...or have been offended being their essential summation of the why.

The LDS Church is incapable of designing a proper survey.

Yep. Those are the only reasons the Church can admit to becuase anything else would mean that there are problems with the church itself and that would open the door to the idea that maybe god is not in charge after all.
