Which fails to explain why a hundred years later John Taylor was anointed a king.
"Any over-ritualized religion since the dawn of time can make its priests say yes, we know, it is rotten, and hard luck, but just do as we say, keep at the ritual, stick it out, give us your money and you'll end up with the angels in heaven for evermore."
"IN THE PAST God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, BUT IN THESE LAST DAYS he has spoken to us by his Son..." Hebrews 1:1-2 Clearly a scripture that indicates as change in God's method.
What possible thing can any presumed prophet say today that can Trump what God has said and done through his Son...he is the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets!
FS, no doubt Mormons will continue to see Smith as a prophet, their prophet.... I do not see any way, however, where his claimed title will be validated within the larger Christian world.

In the larger context the victors get to declare who is a prophet. It may well be in a few hundred years that only Muhammad is seen as a prophet.
I don't think being a prophet actually should depend on a popularity contest. Since I don't believe in God, my definition of a prophet would be someone who has a following who believe he/she has spoken (prophesied if you will) in God's name.

When Jesus Christ returns and he were to state that Joseph Smith was his prophet, would you believe Jesus Christ?
"You lack vision, but I see a place where people get on and off the freeway. On and off, off and on all day, all night.... Tire salons, automobile dealerships and wonderful, wonderful billboards reaching as far as the eye can see. My God, it'll be beautiful." -- Judge Doom
At the risk of being flippant, I think there is a better chance he will return and tell us that he is planning a Disneyland vacation trip as his first order of business.

CFR - where do the scriptures indicate this???
Albion is most likely referring to Hebrews Chapter one, verses one and two from the Bible. Here is this Biblical Passage:
Hebrews 1 (NKJV)
1 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;
