This particular case should not have gotten as much mainstream media attention as it got. It wasn't about race until the mainstream media made it about race. There have already been a few small riots in California over this case that happened in Florida. Zimmerman has already been found not guilty, and if the people in Florida do not like the 'stand your ground' law, then they need to contact their Governor and lawmakers there. There are a lot more important issues to discuss now such as the NSA, IRS, immigration reform and climate change.
I think it all started when GZ wasn't even charged with any crime at all. The police just seemed willing to accept whatever he said with little investigation, at least if we believe some of the witnesses who were barely questioned.
At the very least, when someone kills another person, there ought to be a strenuous investigation.
Whether or not one supports SYG, I think reasonable people would agree that it opens the door to vigilantism, and due caution needs to be exercised as a result. Each case should be strenuously investigated, otherwise it opens the door to the perfect murder. Just behave provocatively towards someone away from witnesses, either start a fight or goad them into starting a fight, let them land a couple of good punches so you have some wounds, and shoot 'em. I'm not saying that's what GZ did, but I am saying that being casual about the application of SYG invites just such a situation.
