You Might want to look at the on-line "Utah Historical Quarterly"
Vol. 40, No. 1 (Winter 1972), which says:

September 13, 1846, at Winter Quarters, Nebraska Territory:
"Lucian R. Foster was cut off from the Church by the Branch
at New York for apostacy."14 Whether Foster continued to pursue
his daguerreian skills in New York -- or on the American frontier --
is now unknown.... Marsena Cannon, Utah's first resident
photographer [had] his first advertisement in the Deseret News
[on Dec. 10, 1850]...

FYI, there's a database of American daguerreotypists at http://craigcamera.com. It has entries for Charles Savage and Marsena Cannon, but nothing on Lucian Foster. Not yet, anyway.

That's pretty much what I was thinking.

And just because it's Halloween, here's a postmortem daguerreotype of Edgar Allen Poe in his coffin...supposedly. The latest theory on his death says he succumbed to rabies.



I can't help but wonder if there's a postmortem daguerreotype of Joseph Smith floating around out there. Postmortem photos were popular, and there seems to have been at least one daguerreotypist in Nauvoo--Lucian Foster. If there was time to cast a death mask, there would also have been time for a postmortem dag.

Hi Dale,

Thanks a lot for the photo, I will def. do something with it. I'm fascinated by Phelps. I think he was more of a partner with Joseph in the early days of the church than Oliver Cowdery. He is the only person that I know of who Joseph said to write doctrine for the church. (1833 letter to Phelps).

Glad to see you here, I love your site, and spend hours and hours there reading. I love your notes, and hate those two words... "under construction". I'll read something really interesting and get to the bottom and see that and go.. rats! (Your notes are great).

Here's a page I'm working on this month.

I could use a jazzy graphic of W. W. Phelps, his wife, Thomas B. Marsh, his wife,
Brigham Young, and his sister, Mrs. Stilson, all singing "Redeemer of Israel" in
an 1830 Canandaigua prayer-circle. (Yes, they were all there -- and, no, it never
made it into the official text for "History of the Church"...)
