I don't get suspended for "crass remarks," I get suspended for being off-topic or for pointing out your dishonesty. Seriously, I get suspended if I post "you're lying" and then prove that you're lying. I also get suspended for talking about the Bible in threads about the Bible. I'm not allowed to talk about the Bible on CARM anymore.

I'm very flattered by your kind words, Bazooka. I hope I can live up to that estimation of me. Servant here makes it difficult.

I may have to revise my defence of you now that you've confessed your complete unreasonableness!

You follow me around the internet to post dishonest claims about me. You bring up arguments that I address only for you to evade them entirely and fall back on your silly question about my personal beliefs. You've been trying to dig up stuff on me through LinkedIn and places like that. You hijack threads for your own bigoted and personal attacks. You very clearly make it difficult for me to engage others in adult conversation.

Let me put it as nicely as possible. As long as you are going to persist in attacking Christians with such terrible comments as calling at least one a "psychopath" and the usage of other ad homs (I don't care if you disagree with us), I will continue to debate your tactics, not to mention your attempt to discredit the Bible.

You're not debating my tactics, you're just slinging dogmatism at me and misrepresenting me.

No, that was not a dogmatic statement at all - it was fact. And your tactics are the issue! I have disagreements on doctrine - even with Christians - but I don't want to stoop to the level of calling people names, commenting on their physical characteristics, impugning them as human beings, or making metaphorical threats. Why don't you simply try disagreeing for once without attaching to such disagreement the caveat that disagreement with you means the person is a knuckle dragging Neanderthal?

I did that for years, Catherine, and all it ever got me was the same bigotry and mindless sectarianism that I get now. Don't pretend you would be acting any differently were I supplicating for your attention on my knees. As long as I promote the honest and informed exegesis that I promote, no matter how I promote it, I will be a worthless heathen to you. Don't insult my intelligence any more than you already have by pretending that is not true.

To move this discussion back onto the topic of how awesome and scholarly mak is, I'd like to have some recommendations from mak as to good introductory college-level texts on historical and literary criticism of the Old Testament. I have Ehrman's "A Historical Introduction to the Early Christian Writings" which I've found helpful in illuminating other basic and more advanced texts related to scholarship with respect to the New Testament, so I'm looking for something similar on the Old Testament.

My wife was recently called as a Gospel Doctrine teacher and I indicated that I would assist as her research assistant in helping her pull some things together that are more illuminating and scholarly than what can be found in the basic seminary/institute manuals on the subject. Plus it would give us some interesting stuff to talk about with respect to the Old Testament, which is probably one of the most impenetrable books of Mormon scripture there is (in terms of understanding the historical context, the symbolism, etc.).

I got an updated Oxford Annotated Bible and Coogan's "The Old Testament: A Historical and Literary Introduction to the Hebrew Scriptures," so if you wanted to make a comment about either of those resources specifically that would be cool.
