Church rewards blatant homophobia in Chile.

Post by _Bazooka »

CONCEPCIÓN – Jacqueline Van Rysselberghe of Unión Demócrata Independiente (UDI) received a prize from the Mormon sect Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días yesterday.

“The award aims to recognize her work in promoting, supporting the family and its role in Chilean society. And for this unprecedented occasion in our country and South America, this recognition will be given to a public person for her defense of the traditional family and its values,” as the Church announced.

Moreover, the church’s recognition for the politician’s “fierce dedication” in publicly defending family values is, according to the denomination’s statements, “the example that we wish for all public persons to follow, with the aim that the family does not lose its social and sacred valor which it has had in the society up until now.”

The Iglesia de Jesucristo continues to emphasize their beliefs that the sanctity of family is between man and woman, stating, “We solemnly proclaim that marriage between man and woman is ordained by God and that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children. Children deserve to be born within the bond of matrimony and to be raised by a father and a mother who honor their matrimonial vows with total fidelity.”

In August, the senator of the right-wing conservative party was quoted by various media outlets to have said that “homosexual couples are more unreliable and violent.”

Ms. Van Rysselberghe made the assertion in regard to the adoption rights of homosexual couples. The statement caused outrage from MOVILH among other public spheres.

With Ms.Van Rysselberghe’s winning an accolade for defending traditional family values, outrage on her previous comments on homosexuality might find new momentum.

i fail to see the validity of your criticism.

People have the right to support their definition of family.
She made no false claims about homosexuals.

Bazooka,
are you proposing that the award was given because of the senator's August statement?..in that you are trying to claim this statement is viewed by the The Iglesia de Jesucristo as equivalent to "promoting, supporting the family and its role in Chilean society"?
because, though related, they seem like two different positions.
I mean
I can understand if you are trying to make the argument that the senator is a homophobe - but that is not necessarily a requirement to receive the award nor is it a requirement for any person who is "promoting, supporting the family and its role in Chilean society".

I cannot see any reasonable argument for the notion that the Proclamation is homophobia.

me thinks you are promoting heterophobia

My point is that the Church is rewarding an individual for their stance on family values, where this individuals family values include blatant homophobic opinions such as "gay couples are unreliable and violent". By association it can be portrayed that the Church supports that view. Perhaps it does!

has not the church merely maintained that LGBT is not in accordance with their stance on family values (i.e. the Proclamation)?
In other words, that is their only view, i am not aware that the church has judged gay couples as being unreliable or violent.

The church actually supports LGBT, just not their behavior choices should they perform homosexual acts (like Interior Design?).

That being said, I am not sure how homophobic can be applied to the referenced statement, especially since a considerable amount of scientific data supports that conclusion. I would consider a homophobic statement to be more in line with "dump 'em all in the river!" or "oh no! one of 'em touched my elbow."...i mean to say, that i thought homophobia was related to attitude and feeling.

You've been owned on that statement more than once. Do you remember the thread where you posted links to such evidence which, when examined properly actually refuted what you were claiming they supported? Don't make yourself a laughing stock again.

This reminds me of a couple of things:

1) "In individuals, insanity is rare; but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule."

2) A book called After the Ball by Marshall Kirk, Published in 1990, is said to be brilliant piece of writing, which argued that gays must portray themselves in a positive way to straight America, and that the main aim of making homosexuality acceptable could be achieved by getting Americans "to think that it is just another thing, with a shrug of their shoulders". Then "your battle for legal and social rights is virtually won".

Two quotes from the Kirk book, aimed at showing how to use advertising and PR to advance the agenda:

"Thus propagandistic advertising can depict all opponents of the gay movement as homophobic bigots who are 'not Christian' and the propoganda can further show them as being criticized, hated and shunned"....
"Our effect is achieved without reference to facts, logic or proof.... the person's beliefs can be altered whether he is conscious of the attack or not".

Because Chilean senators who publicly voice opinions are now extreme to you?
