No longer in fashion? I used to have a paisley shirt when I was in Junior High School. I always felt evil when I wore it.

In my quest to understand the scriptures I took them quite literal at one point. So of course I believed in demons and all of the other things described in the scriptures. I studied possession and the casting out of evil spirits. It was easy to assign various earthly problems to evil spirits. If you believe hard enough your mind will of course manufacture spirits around you. The mind is very powerful and if you tell it something is true it will of course make it true.
Our mind is part of this world. We are to walk away from this world and leave it behind. So if one goes down the demon path they will be lost and the truth will run from them. All of the discussion of demons in the scriptures are parts placed there by men wishing to control the hearts of man. To take this path is just like absolute faith in science. There is no difference. It is a diversion away from what is actually true.
The issue is desire. Do you wish demons to be true? Ask yourself why? Why would a loving God place demons on the earth that can take over a person? It can not happen. It violates the top two commandments of God. It also takes away free will. Free will is the highest rule of the universe. When Christ came He never took away the free will of another. So why would a demon be allowed to do what Christ would not do. It makes no sense. Search within and you will find that all of this demon and possession stuff is of man. It is a stumbling block. I have stumbled but got over it and moved on.
All prophets, including Christ, taught people who were wrapped up inside of religion. In order to be able to communicate so that the people could have a chance of understanding, prophets would teach in accordance with those religious beliefs. Now, inasmuch as the Jews already believed in demons, heaven, and hell, and such, prophets and Christ taught using the same terminology. This was not in order to condone their beliefs, but to try to allow the people their own free agency to "hear" the message; or not. As such, teachings which used the terminology of religion, were meant to be symbolic.
