Amos 1:1-15

This message was given to Amos, a shepherd living in Tekoa of Judah. He received this message in visions 2 years before the earthquake, when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam II, the son of Jehoash, was king of Israel.

This is what He said, “The Lord’s voice will roar from Zion and resound from Jerusalem! The lush sheep pastures will dry up; the grass on Mount Carmel will wither and die.”

This is what the Lord says, “The people of Damascus have sinned continually, and I will not let them go unpunished! They crushed My people in Gilead as grain is threshed with iron sledges.

So I will send down fire on King Hazael’s palace, and the fortresses of King Ben-hadad will be ruined.

I will break open the gates of Damascus and slaughter the people in the valley of Aven. I will destroy the ruler in Beth-eden, and the people of Aram will go as captives to Kir,”

This is what the Lord said, “The people of Gaza have sinned continually, and I will not let them go without punishment! They sent whole villages into exile, selling them as slaves to Edom.

So I will send down fire on the walls of Gaza, and all its fortresses will be destroyed.

I will slaughter the people of Ashdod and destroy the king of Ashkelon. Then I will turn to attack Ekron, and the few Philistines still around will be killed,”

This is what the Lord said, “The people of Tyre have sinned continually, and I will not let them go unpunished! They broke their treaty of brotherhood with Israel, selling whole villages as slaves to Edom.

So I will send down fire on the walls of Tyre, and all its fortifications will be destroyed.”

This is what the Lord said, “The people of Edom have sinned continually and I will not let them go unpunished! They chased down their relatives, the Israelites, with swords, showing them no mercy. In their rage, they slashed them continually and were unrelenting in their anger.

So I will send down fire on Teman, and the fortresses of Bozrah will be destroyed.”

This is what the Lord said, “The people of Ammon have sinned continually, and I will not let them go unpunished! When they attacked Gilead to extend their borders, they ripped open pregnant women with their swords.

So I will send down fire on the walls of Rabbah, and all its forts will be destroyed. The battle will arrive with shouting, like a tornado in a mighty storm.

And their king and his princes will go into exile together,”

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Words of Amos -- who hath been among herdsmen of Tekoa -- that he hath seen concerning Israel, in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the shaking;

2 and he saith: Jehovah from Zion doth roar, And from Jerusalem giveth forth His voice, And mourned have pastures of the shepherds, And withered hath the top of Carmel!

3 And thus said Jehovah: For three transgressions of Damascus, And for four, I do not reverse it, Because of their threshing Gilead with sharp-pointed irons,

4 And I have sent a fire against the house of Hazael, And it hath consumed the palaces of Ben-Hadad.

5 And I have broken the bar of Damascus, And cut off the inhabitant from Bikat-Aven, And a holder of a sceptre from Beth-Eden, And removed have been the people of Aram to Kir, said Jehovah.

6 Thus said Jehovah: For three transgressions of Gaza, And for four, I do not reverse it, Because of their removing a complete captivity, To deliver up to Edom,

7 And I have sent a fire against the wall of Gaza, And it hath consumed her palaces;

8 And I have cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod, And a holder of a sceptre from Ashkelon, And have turned back My hand against Ekron, And perished have the remnant of the Philistines, Said the Lord
Jehovah.

9 Thus said Jehovah: For three transgressions of Tyre, And for four, I do not reverse it, Because of their delivering up a complete captivity to Edom, And they remembered not the brotherly covenant,

10 And I have sent a fire against the wall of Tyre, And it hath consumed her palaces.

11 Thus said Jehovah: For three transgressions of Edom, And for four, I do not reverse it, Because of his pursuing with a sword his brother, And he hath destroyed his mercies, And tear perpetually doth his
anger, And his wrath -- he hath kept it for ever,

12 And I have sent a fire against Teman, And it hath consumed palaces of Bozrah.

13 Thus said Jehovah: For three transgressions of the sons of Ammon, And for four, I do not reverse it, Because of their ripping up the pregnant ones of Gilead, To enlarge their border,

14 And I have kindled a fire against the wall of Rabbah, And it hath consumed her palaces, With a shout in a day of battle, With a whirlwind in a day of hurricane,

15 And gone hath their king in a removal, He and his heads together, said Jehovah!

Amos 2:1-15

The Lord proclaims that for 3 crimes of Moab --- actually 4, He will bring punishment, because Moab burned to lime the bones of the king of Edom.

He will send down a fire on Moab and consume the palaces of Kerioth. Moab will die with great violence --- with a war cry, with the sound of the ram’s horn.

He will remove their judge from them and slay all their administrators with Moab,

The Lord proclaims that for 3 crimes of Judah --- actually 4, He will bring punishment, because they have rejected the Lord's Instruction, and disregarded His laws. They have been led off the correct path by the same lies that their ancestors embraced.

So He will send a fire upon Judah, and it will consume the palaces of Jerusalem.

The Lord proclaims that for 3 crimes of Israel --- actually 4, He will bring punishment, because they have enslaved the innocent for silver, and those in need for a pair of sandals.

They pushed the head of the poor into the dirt, and shoved the sickly out of the way. Father and son have intercourse with the same young woman, degrading His holy name.

They stretch out beside every altar on garments taken in loan. They drink wine in the temples of their gods --- wine purchased with fines they imposed.

Yet He destroyed the Amorite before them, whose height was like cedar trees, and whose strength was as strong as an oak. He destroyed the fruit of the Amorite above and his roots below.

Also He brought Israel up out of Egypt, and guided them 40 years in the wilderness, to lay claim to the land of the Amorite.

He raised up some of their children to be prophets and some of their youth to be nazirites. Isn’t this true, Israel?

But you made the nazirites drink wine, and commanded the prophets, to shut up!

So now God will oppress you, just like a cart is weighed down when it is overloaded with harvested grain.

Fast runners will not find a hiding place; the strong will become weak; the mighty will be unable to save themselves.

Those with weapons won’t survive. Fast runners won’t escape; those who ride horses won’t save themselves.

The bravest warrior will run away stripped naked in that day,

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Thus said Jehovah: For three transgressions of Moab, And for four, I do not reverse it, Because of his burning the bones of the king of Edom to lime,

2 And I have sent a fire against Moab, And it hath consumed the palaces of Kerioth, And dying with noise is Moab, With shouting, with voice of a trumpet.

3 And I have cut off a judge from her midst, And all its heads I slay with him, said Jehovah.

4 Thus said Jehovah: For three transgressions of Judah, And for four, I do not reserve it, Because of their loathing the law of Jehovah, And His statutes they have not kept, And their lies do cause them to
err, After which their fathers did walk,

5 And I have sent a fire against Judah, And it hath consumed palaces of Jerusalem.

6 Thus said Jehovah: For three transgressions of Israel, And for four, I do not reverse it, Because of their selling for silver the righteous, And the needy for a pair of sandals.

7 Who are panting for the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, And the way of the humble they turn aside, And a man and his father go unto the damsel, So as to pollute My holy name.

8 And on pledged garments they stretch themselves near every altar, And the wine of fined ones they drink [in] the house of their gods.

9 And I -- I have destroyed the Amorite from before them, Whose height [is] as the height of cedars, And strong he [is] as the oaks, And I destroy his fruit from above, And his roots from beneath.

10 And I -- I have brought you up from the land of Egypt, And cause you to go in a wilderness forty years, To possess the land of the Amorite.

11 And I raise of your sons for prophets, And of your choice ones for Nazarites, Is not this true, O sons of Israel? An affirmation of Jehovah.

12 And ye cause the Nazarites to drink wine, And on the prophets ye have laid a charge, Saying, `Do not prophecy!'

13 Lo, I am pressing you under, As the full cart doth press for itself a sheaf.

14 And perished hath refuge from the swift, And the strong strengtheneth not his power, And the mighty delivereth not his soul.

15 And the handler of the bow standeth not, And the swift with his feet delivereth not [himself], And the rider of the horse delivereth not his soul.

16 And the courageous of heart among the mighty, Naked doth flee in that day, An affirmation of Jehovah!

Amos 3:1-15

Listen to this word which the Godhead ponounces against you, people of Israel, against the entire family that I brought up from the land of Egypt.

“Of all the families of earth, only you have I embraced intimately. This is why I will punish you for all your crimes.”

Do two people travel together without first agreeing?

Does a lion roar in the woods when there is nothing to catch? Does a young lion growl in his lair if it finds nothing?

Does the unbaited trap catch fowl? Does a trap trigger when it has taken nothing?

When the horn is blown in the city, don’t the people tremble? Can disaster befall a city without Godhead being involved?

Lord, Lord, LORD, God, does nothing without presenting His plan to His servants the prophets.

The lion has roared. Who is unconcerned? Lord, Lord LORD, God, has spoken. Who will not prophesy?

“Proclaim it from the palaces in Ashdod, and from the palaces in Egypt; saying, ‘Assemble yourselves on the hills of Shomron! See what great turbulence boiling within it, how much oppression is accomplished there.’

For they don’t know how to behave correctly,” says Godhead. “They ferment violence and thievery in their municipal buildings.”

Therefore, here is what Godhead is saying, “An enemy will surround the land. He will sap up your strength, and plunder your municipal buildings.”

This is what the Godhead declares, “As a shepherd rescues from the mouth of a lion but a mauled mess; so the people of Israel in Shomron will be rescued, huddled under cushions in the corners of their beds. “Hear, and testify against the house of Jacob,” says the Godhead Supreme.

“For when I punish Israel’s crimes, I will also punish the altars of Beit-El. The horns of the altar will be hacked off, and they will fall to the ground.

I will destroy winter houses as well as summer houses; houses adorned with finery will be destroyed; mansions will be gone,” says the Godhead.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Hear ye this word that Jehovah hath spoken concerning you, O sons of Israel, concerning all the family that I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying:

2 Only you I have known of all families of the land, Therefore I charge on you all your iniquities.

3 Do two walk together if they have not met?

4 Roar doth a lion in a forest and prey he hath none? Give out doth a young lion his voice from his habitation, If he hath not caught?

5 Doth a bird fall into a snare of the earth, And there is no gin for it? Doth a snare go up from the ground, And prey it captureth not?

6 Is a trumpet blown in a city, And do people not tremble? Is there affliction in a city, And Jehovah hath not done [it]?

7 For the Lord Jehovah doth nothing, Except He hath revealed His counsel unto His servants the prophets.

8 A lion hath roared -- who doth not fear? The Lord Jehovah hath spoken -- who doth not prophesy?

9 Sound ye unto palaces in Ashdod, And to palaces in the land of Egypt, and say: Be ye gathered on mountains of Samaria, And see many troubles within her, And oppressed ones in her midst.

10 And they have not known to act straightforwardly, An affirmation of Jehovah, Who are treasuring up violence and spoil in their palaces.

11 Therefore, thus said the Lord Jehovah: An adversary -- and surrounding the land, And he hath brought down from thee thy strength, And spoiled have been thy palaces.

12 Thus said Jehovah: As the shepherd delivereth from the lion's mouth Two legs, or a piece of an ear, So delivered are the sons of Israel, Who are sitting in Samaria on the corner of a bed, And in
Damascus [on that of] a couch.

13 Hear ye and testify to the house of Jacob, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah, God of Hosts.

14 For in the day of My charging the transgressions of Israel on him, I have laid a charge on the altars of Beth-El, And cut off have been the horns of the altar, And they have fallen to the earth.

15 And I have smitten the winter-house with the summer-house, And perished have houses of ivory, And consumed have been many houses, An affirmation of Jehovah!

Amos 4:1-13

Hear this word, you pampered cows of Bashan who are upon the mountain of Samaria, Who oppress the poor -- crush the needy, Who say to their husbands, “Bring the boze now, and let us drink!”

The Lord God has sworn on His holiness that, the days are coming upon you when they shall take you away with meat hooks, and the remainder with fish hooks.

“And you shall go out through the gaps made in the city wall, every woman straight out. And you shall be cast from the high place,” Says the Lord.

"Welcome to Bethel and act in error. In Gilgal multiply your transgression. Bring your sacrifices every morning -- your tithes every three days!

Offer a burnt sacrifice of thanksgiving of that which has yeast, and boastfully proclaim freewill offerings. For this you enjoy doing, dear children of Israel!”
Says the Lord God.

“I also gave you clean teeth (do to a total lack of food) in all your cities and a lack of bread everywhere you are. Yet you have not repented to Me,” says the Lord.

“Furthermore, I gave you a drought --- three months before the harvest. Then I would send rain on one city, and upon another city I would not. One piece of ground was rained on, While another would dry up.

“So two or three cities would nearly stagger into one city to drink water, but without satisfaction. Yet you have not repented,” says the Lord.

“I harm you with blight and mildew, and devouring caterpillar your many gardens, vineyards, fig trees and your olive trees. Yet you have not repented,” says the Lord.

“I sent a plague among you like what happened in Egypt. I killed your young men with the sword and I captured your horses, I made the stench of your camp rise into your nostrils; Yet you have not repented,” says the Lord.

“I overthrew and destroyed some among you, as I did overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. And you were saved like a log pulled out of the flame; Yet you have not repented,” says the Lord.

“As a result this is what I shall do to you, dear Israel; Because I will judge you, dear Israel!”

For see, He who forms the mountains and creates the wind and declares to man what He's thinking, and turns the dawn into darkness and strides across the heights of the earth—The Godhead is His name.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Hear this word, ye kine of Bashan, Who [are] in the mountain of Samaria, Who are oppressing the poor, Who are bruising the needy, Who are saying to their lords: `Bring in, and we do drink.'

2 Sworn hath the Lord Jehovah by His holiness, That lo, days are coming upon you, And he hath taken you away with hooks, And your posterity with fish-hooks.

3 And [by] breaches ye go forth, A woman [at that] over-against her, And ye have cast down the high place, An affirmation of Jehovah.

4 Enter ye Beth-El, and transgress, At Gilgal multiply transgression, And bring in every morning your sacrifices, Every third year your tithes.

5 And perfume with leaven a thank-offering, And proclaim willing gifts, sound ye! For so ye have loved, O sons of Israel, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah.

6 And I also -- I have given to you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, And lack of bread in all your places, And ye have not turned back unto Me, an affirmation of Jehovah.

7 And I also -- I have withheld from you the rain. While yet three months to harvest, And I have sent rain on one city, And on another city I do not send rain, One portion is rained on, And the portion on
which it raineth not withereth.

8 And wandered have two or three cities, Unto the same city to drink water, And they are not satisfied, And ye have not turned back unto Me, An affirmation of Jehovah.

9 I have smitten you with blasting and with mildew, The abundance of your gardens and of your vineyards, And of your figs, and of your olives, Eat doth the palmer-worm, And ye have not turned back
unto Me, An affirmation of Jehovah.

10 I have sent among you pestilence by the way of Egypt, I have slain by sword your choice ones, With your captive horses, And I cause the stink of your camps to come up -- even into your nostrils, And
ye have not turned back unto Me, An affirmation of Jehovah.

11 I have overturned among you, Like the overturn by God of Sodom and Gomorrah, And ye are as a brand delivered from a burning, And ye have not turned back unto Me, An affirmation of Jehovah.

12 Therefore, thus I do to thee, O Israel, at last, Because this I do to thee, Prepare to meet thy God, O Israel.

13 For, lo, the former of mountains, and creator of wind, And the declarer to man what [is] His thought, He is making dawn obscurity, And is treading on high places of earth, Jehovah, God of Hosts, [is] His name!

Amos 5:1-27

Hear this word which I present as a dirge against you, dear Israel:

Collapsed, no more to rise is maiden Israel; forsaken on her land, with no one to raise her up.

For the Lord God remarked: that city that sent a thousand will be left with just a hundred, and the one that sent a hundred will be left with ten for Israel.

In fact, the Lord of Israel says seek Me and live!

But do not seek Bethel, and do not enter into Gilgal or cross over to Beersheba; Gilgal will surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall be gone.

Seek the Lord and live, or He will break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and it shall consume Bethel, with no one to stop this.

You who turn justice into bitterness and cast righteousness down to the ground!

The One who Created the Pleiades and Orion, who turns the deep darkness into dawn and darkens the day into night, who summons the waters of the sea and pours them upon the surface of the earth—
the Lord is His name,

the One who flashes destruction against the strong, so that destruction comes against the fortress.

They hate the one who criticizes at the gate, and abhor the one who speaks with integrity.

Therefore, because you walk over the poor and take from him a levy of wheat, though you have built hewn stone houses, you will not reside in them; though you have planted pleasant vineyards, you will not drink their wine.

For I know your transgressions are many and your sins many, you who oppress the just, who accept bribes and undemind the needy at the gate.

Therefore the prudent are silent at such a time, for it an evil moment.

Seek good and not evil, so that you may live; then the Lord, the Godhead, will truly be with you, as you claim.

Hate evil and love good, and establish justice at the gate. It may then be that the Godhead will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

Therefore says says the Lord, of the Godhead:

Wailing will be in all the squares, and in all the streets they will cry, “Alas! Alas!” They shall call the farmer to mourning, and to wailing those skilled in lamentation.

In all vineyards there shall be wailing, for I will pass through you, says the Lord.

The Day of the Lord Is Darkness. Misery to you that desire the day of the Lord! Why would you want this? It is darkness, and not light,

as if someone ran from a lion, but gets mauled by a bear, or made it into the house and rested his hand on the wall, and is bitten by an asp.

The day of the Lord will bring darkness, and not light. It will be a deep darkness, with no brightness within.

I hate, I despise your holidays, and I am not impressed by your solemn assemblies.

Though you offer Me burnt offerings or your grain offerings, I will regard them, nor will I consider the offerings of your fattened animals.

Remove from Me the noise of your singing --- I will not listen to the melody of your harps.

But let justice cascade down like water, and righteousness like an continuous stream.

Did you bring Me sacrifices and offerings those 40 years in the wilderness, dear Israel?

But you will carry away Sukuth your lord and Kaiwan your star-images, your gods that you concocted for yourselves,

As I drive you out into exile beyond Damascus, says the Godhead.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Hear this word that I am bearing to you, A lamentation, O house of Israel:

2 `Fallen, not again to rise, hath the virgin of Israel, Left on her land -- she hath no raiser up.'

3 For thus said the Lord Jehovah: The city that is going out a thousand, Doth leave an hundred, And that which is going out an hundred, Doth leave ten to the house of Israel.

4 For thus said Jehovah to the house of Israel: Seek ye Me, and live,

5 And seek not Beth-El, and Gilgal enter not, And Beer-Sheba pass not through, For Gilgal doth utterly remove, And Beth-El doth become vanity.

6 Seek ye Jehovah, and live, Lest He prosper as fire [against] the house of Joseph, And it hath consumed, And there is no quencher for Beth-El.

7 Ye who are turning to wormwood judgment, And righteousness to the earth have put down,

8 The maker of Kimah and Kesil, And the turner to morning of death-shade, And day [as] night He hath made dark, Who is calling to the waters of the sea, And poureth them on the face of the earth,
Jehovah [is] His name;

9 Who is brightening up the spoiled against the strong, And the spoiled against a fortress cometh.

10 They have hated a reprover in the gate, And a plain speaker they abominate.

11 Therefore, because of your trampling on the poor, And the tribute of corn ye take from him, Houses of hewn work ye have built, And ye do not dwell in them, Desirable vineyards ye have planted, And
ye do not drink their wine.

12 For I have known -- many [are] your transgressions, And mighty your sins, Adversaries of the righteous, taking ransoms, And the needy in the gate ye turned aside.

13 Therefore is the wise at that time silent, For an evil time it [is].

14 Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live, And it is so; Jehovah, God of Hosts, [is] with you, as ye said.

15 Hate evil, and love good, And set up judgment in the gate, It may be Jehovah, God of Hosts, doth pity the remnant of Joseph.

16 Therefore, thus said Jehovah, God of Hosts, the Lord, In all broad places [is] lamentation, And in all out-places they say, `Alas, alas,' And called the husbandman to mourning, And to lamentation the
skilful of wailing.

17 And in all vineyards [is] lamentation, For I pass into thy midst, said Jehovah.

18 Ho, ye who are desiring the day of Jehovah, Why [is] this to you -- the day of Jehovah? It is darkness, and not light,

19 As [when] one fleeth from the face of the lion, And the bear hath met him, And he hath come in to the house, And hath leant his hand on the wall, And the serpent hath bitten him.

20 Is not the day of Jehovah darkness and not light, Even thick darkness that hath no brightness?

21 I have hated -- I have loathed your festivals, And I am not refreshed by your restraints.

22 For though ye cause burnt-offerings and your presents to ascend to Me, I am not pleased, And the peace-offering of your fatlings I behold not.

23 Turn aside from Me the noise of thy songs, Yea, the praise of thy psaltery I hear not.

24 And roll on as waters doth judgment, And righteousness as a perennial stream.

25 Sacrifices and offering did ye bring nigh to Me, In a wilderness forty years, O house of Israel?

26 And ye bare Succoth your king, and Chiun your images, The star of your god, that ye made for yourselves.

27 And I removed you beyond Damascus, Said Jehovah, God of Hosts [is] His name.

Amos 6:1-14

Judgment is coming to those who are at ease and could care less in Judah, and to those on the mountain of Samaria who feel safe --- the distinguished men of the major nations, to whom Israel comes.

Go over to Calneh [in Babylonia] and look, And from there go [north of Damascus] to the great city of Hamath; Then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are they better than these kingdoms, Or is their territory greater than yours?

Do you put off the day of punishment, yet cause the seat of violence to come near?

Those who lie in luxury and lounge around out on their couches, eating lambs from the flock and calves from the midst of the stall,

who improvise to the sound of the harp—Like David they have composed songs for themselves—

Who drink wine from sacrificial bowl and anoint themselves with the finest oils; Yet they don'r care cpncerning the ruin of Joseph (Israel).

As a result, they will now go into exile with the first of the captives, and the cultic revelry and banqueting of those who lounge around will cease.

The Lord God has sworn by Himself—the Godhead, says: “I loathe and reject the self-centeredness of Jacob (Israel). And I hate his palaces and fortresses; therefore, I shall hand over the city [of Samaria] with everything to the Assyrian invaders.”

And it shall come to pass that if there remain ten men in one house, they shall die.

Then one’s uncle, or his undertaker, shall come to bring the body out of the house, and he will say to another in the farthest part of the house, “Is there anyone else with you?” And that one will say, “No one.” Then he will respond, “Keep quiet! For the name of the Lord is not to be mentioned that we might invoke even more punishment.”

For behold, the Lord is going to command that the great house be smashed to pieces and the small house to fragments.

Do horses run on rocks? Do men plow rocks with oxen? Yet you have turned justice into poison And the fruit of righteousness into bitterness,

You who rejoice in nothing, Who say, “Have we not by our own strength taken Strength for ourselves?”

“Look, I am going to stir up a nation against you, O Israel,” says the Lord, of the Godhead, “And they will afflict and torment you from the entrance of Hamath [north] to the brook of the Arabah south.”

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Wo [to] those secure in Zion, And those confident in the mount of Samaria, The marked of the chief of the nations, And come to them have the house of Israel.

2 Pass ye over [to] Calneh and see, And go thence [to] Hamath the great, And go down [to] Gath of the Philistines, Are [they] better than these kingdoms? Greater [is] their border than your border?

3 Who are putting away the day of evil, And ye bring nigh the seat of violence,

4 Who are lying down on beds of ivory, And are spread out on their couches, And are eating lambs from the flock, And calves from the midst of the stall,

5 Who are taking part according to the psaltery, Like David they invented for themselves instruments of music;

6 Who are drinking with bowls of wine, And [with] chief perfumes anoint [themselves], And have not been pained for the breach of Joseph.

7 Therefore now they remove at the head of the captives, And turned aside is the mourning-feast of stretched-out ones.

8 Sworn hath the Lord Jehovah by Himself, An affirmation of Jehovah, God of Hosts: I am abominating the excellency of Jacob, And his high places I have hated, And I have delivered up the city and its
fulness.

9 And if there are left ten persons in one house, It hath come to pass -- that they have died.

10 And lifted him up hath his loved one, even his burner, To bring forth the bones from the house, And he said to him who [is] in the sides of the house, `Is there yet with thee?' And he said, `None,' then
he said, `Hush! Save to make mention of the name of Jehovah.'

11 For lo, Jehovah is commanding, And He hath smitten the great house [with] breaches, And the little house [with] clefts.

12 Do horses run on a rock? Doth one plough [it] with oxen? For ye have turned to gall judgment, And the fruit of righteousness to wormwood.

13 O ye who are rejoicing at nothing, Who are saying, `Have we not by our strength taken to ourselves horns?'

14 Surely, lo, I am raising against you a nation, O house of Israel, An affirmation of Jehovah, God of Hosts, And they have oppressed you from the coming in to Hamath, Unto the stream of the desert.

Amos 7:1-17

The Sovereign Lord showed me a vision. I saw him preparing to send a vast swarm of locusts upon the country. This was after the monarch's portion had been harvested from the fields and as the main crop was sprouting.

In my vision the locusts ate every green plant in sight. Then I cried, “Dear Lord, please forgive us or we will not survive, for Israel is so little.”

So the Lord withheld this plan. “I will not do it,” He admitted.

Then the Sovereign Lord showed me another vision. I saw him preparing to punish his people with a great fire. The fire had burned up the depths of the sea and was devouring the entire land.

Then I said, “Dear Lord Lord, please stop or we will not survive, for Israel is so tiny.”

The Lord withheld this plan, too. “I will not do that either,” admitted the Sovereign Lord.

Then he showed me another vision. I saw the Lord standing beside a wall constructed using a plumb line. He was using a plumb line to see if it was still perpendicular.

And the Lord asked me, “Amos, what do you see?”

I answered, “A plumb line.”

And the Lord replied, “I will test my people with this plumb line. I will no longer ignore all their sins.

The pagan shrines of your ancestors will be ruined, and the temples of Israel will be demolished; I will suddenly end the dynasty of King Jeroboam.”

Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent a message to Jeroboam, king of Israel: “Amos is plotting against you right here on your very doorstep! What he is saying is inexcusable.

He is saying, ‘Jeroboam will soon be killed, and the people of Israel will be carried away into exile.’”

Then Amaziah sent orders to Amos: “Get out of here, you prophet! Return to Judah, and earn your living by prophesying there!

Don’t bother us with your prophecies here in Bethel. This is the king’s sanctuary and the politically correct place to worship!”

But Amos replied, “I’m not a professional prophet, and I was never educated as one. I’m simply a shepherd, and I prune sycamore-fig trees.

But the Lord called me away from my flock and told me, ‘Go and prophesy to my people in Israel.’

Now then, listen to the Lord's message, “You say, ‘Don’t prophesy against Israel. Stop preaching against my people.’

But this is what the Lord says: ‘Your wife will take up prostitution in this city and your children will be killed. Your land will be dived up, and you yourself will die in a foreign country. And the people of Israel will assuredly become captives in exile, far away.’”

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Thus hath the Lord Jehovah shewed me, and lo, He is forming locusts at the beginning of the ascending of the latter growth, and lo, the latter growth [is] after the mowings of the king;

2 and it hath come to pass, when it hath finished to consume the herb of the land, that I say: `Lord Jehovah, forgive, I pray Thee, How doth Jacob arise -- for he [is] small?'

3 Jehovah hath repented of this, `It shall not be,' said Jehovah.

4 Thus hath the Lord Jehovah shewed me, and lo, the Lord Jehovah is calling to contend by fire, and it consumeth the great deep, yea, it hath consumed the portion, and I say:

5 `Lord Jehovah, cease, I pray Thee, How doth Jacob arise -- for he [is] small?'

6 Jehovah hath repented of this, `It also shall not be,' said the Lord Jehovah.

7 Thus hath He shewed me, and lo, the Lord is standing by a wall [made according to] a plumb-line, and in His hand a plumb-line;

8 and Jehovah saith unto me, `What art thou seeing, Amos?' And I say, `A plumb-line;' and the Lord saith: `Lo, I am setting a plumb-line in the midst of My people Israel, I do not add any more to pass
over to it.

9 And desolated have been high places of Isaac, And sanctuaries of Israel are wasted, And I have risen against the house of Jeroboam with a sword.'

10 And Amaziah priest of Beth-El sendeth unto Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, `Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is not able to bear all his words,

11 for thus said Amos: By sword die doth Jeroboam, And Israel certainly removeth from off its land.'

12 And Amaziah saith unto Amos, `Seer, go flee for thee unto the land of Judah, and eat there bread, and there thou dost prophesy;

13 and [at] Beth-El do not add to prophesy any more, for it [is] the king's sanctuary, and it [is] the royal house.'

14 And Amos answereth and saith unto Amaziah, `I [am] no prophet, nor a prophet's son [am] I, but a herdsman I [am], and a cultivator of sycamores,

15 and Jehovah taketh me from after the flock, and Jehovah saith unto me, Go, prophesy unto My people Israel.

16 And now, hear a word of Jehovah: thou art saying, Do not prophesy against Israel, nor drop [any thing] against the house of Isaac,

17 therefore thus said Jehovah: Thy wife in the city doth go a-whoring, And thy sons and thy daughters by sword do fall, And thy land by line is apportioned, And thou on an unclean land diest, And Israel
certainly removeth from off its land.'

Amos 8:1-14

This the Lord God revealed to me: I saw a basket filled with summer fruit.

He said to me, “Amos, what is this?”

I said, “A basket of summer fruit.”

Then the Lord said to me, “The end has arrived to my people Israel. I will not disregard their sins anymore.

Their temple songs will become dirges.” This the Lord God said. “There will be corpses everywhere. In silence, people will remove and pile them up.”

Hear Me, you who walk over helpless people --- hurting the poor of this country.

You merchants say, “When will the New Moon pass so that we can sell grain? When will the Sabbath be over so that we can bring out more wheat to sell? We can raise prices for shrunken amounts. We can adjust scales and cheat the people.

The poor cannot pay their loans, so we will buy them as slaves. We will buy those helpless people for the price of a pair of sandals. We can sell the wheat that was spilled on the floor.”

The Lord promised using His name, “Pride of Jacob,” and made this promise: “I will never forget what those people did.

There will be an earthquake that will shake the country because of what they did. Everyone living there will cry for those who died. The land will be tossed around. The whole land will rise and fall like the Nile River in Egypt.”

The Lord God also said, “At that time I will make the sun set at noon and darken the land on a clear day.

I will change your festivals into days for lamenting the dead. All your songs will be songs of sadness for those who are dead. I will put mourning clothes on every body and baldness upon every head. I will cause mourning everywhere, like that for an only son who has died. It will be a very bitter end.”

The Lord God says, “Realize that the days are coming when I will bring a famine to the land. The people will not be hungry for bread, nor thirsty for water. They will be hungry for words from the Lord.

The people will wander around the country, from the Dead Sea to the Mediterranean, and from the north to the east. They will go back and forth seeking a message from the Lord, but will not find any.

At that time the beautiful young people will become weak from thirst.

They made promises by the sin of Samaria. They said, ‘Dan, as surely as your god lives, we promise ….’ And they said, ‘As surely as the god of Beersheba lives, we promise ….’ But they will fall and never rise again.”

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Thus hath the Lord Jehovah shewed me, and, lo, a basket of summer-fruit.

2 And He saith, `What art thou seeing, Amos?' and I say, `A basket of summer-fruit.' And Jehovah saith unto me: `The end hath come unto My people Israel, I do not add any more to pass over to it.

3 And howled have songstresses of a palace in that day, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah, Many [are] the carcases, into any place throw -- hush!

4 Hear this, ye who are swallowing up the needy, To cause to cease the poor of the land,

5 Saying, When doth the new moon pass, And we sell ground corn? And the sabbath, and we open out pure corn? To make little the ephah, And to make great the shekel, And to use perversely balances of deceit.

6 To purchase with money the poor, And the needy for a pair of sandals, Yea, the refuse of the pure corn we sell.

7 Sworn hath Jehovah by the excellency of Jacob: `I forget not for ever any of their works.

8 For this doth not the land tremble, And mourned hath every dweller in it? And come up as a flood hath all of it. And it hath been cast out, and hath sunk, Like the flood of Egypt.

9 And it hath come to pass in that day, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah, I have caused the sun to go in at noon, And caused darkness on the land in a day of light,

10 And have turned your festivals to mourning, And all your songs to lamentation, And caused sackcloth to come up on all loins, And on every head -- baldness, And made it as a mourning [of] an only one, And its latter end as a day of bitterness.

11 Lo, days are coming, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah, And I have sent a famine into the land, Not a famine of bread, nor a thirst of water But of hearing the words of Jehovah.

12 And they have wandered from sea unto sea, And from north even unto east, They go to and fro to seek the word of Jehovah, And they do not find.

13 In that day faint do the fair virgins, And the young men, with thirst.

14 Those swearing by the guilt of Samaria, And have said, Live doth thy god, O Dan, And, Live doth the way of Beer-Sheba, And they have fallen -- and rise not again!'

Amos 9:1-15

I witnessed the Lord standing beside the altar, and He said, “Strike the column tops until the foundation shakes! Smash them to smithereens over the heads of all the people! Those who remain I will kill with the sword. None will succeed in fleeing to escape.

If they dig down to the abode of the dead, My hand will haul them out; if they climb up to heaven, I will drag them down.

If they hide themselves on the top of Mt. Carmel, I will search and capture them there; If they hide from Me at the sea bottom, I will order the serpent to bite them there.

If their enemies gather them into exile, I will have them killed there. I will fix my gaze on them for harm and not good.”

For the Godhead is the One who can melt the earth with His touch, and make all who live on it mourn. It will all rise like the Nile, and then subside as the Nile.

He builds upper rooms in heaven and establishes His sky-vault over the earth. He summons waters from the sea and pours them out over the earth. God is his name.

“People of Israel, are you any different from the Ethiopians to Me?” asks the Lord. “True, I brought Israel up from Egypt, but I also brought the P’lishtim from Caphtor, and Aram from Kir.

Look, the eyes of the Godhead are on the sinful kingdom. I will eradicate such the face of the earth, yet I will not completely destroy the house of Jacob” says the Lord.

“For when I give the order, I will shake the house of Israel, as one shakes with a sieve, letting no grain fall to the ground.

All the sinners among my people who proclaim, ‘Disaster will never occure to us,’ will die by the sword.

“When that day comes, I will raise up the fallen tabernacle of David. I will mend its holes, raise up its ruins and rebuild it as it once was,

so that Israel can possess what is left of Edom and of all the nations bearing my name,” says the Lord, who is doing this.

“The days will come,” says the Lord, “when the plowman will overtake the reaper and the one treading grapes the one sowing seed. Sweet wine will drip down the mountains, and all the hills will flow in it.

I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel; they will rebuild and inhabit the ruined cities; they will plant vineyards and drink their wine, cultivate gardens and eat their fruit.

I will root them on their own soil, no more to be uprooted from their land, which I gave them,” says the Lord Your God.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 I have seen the Lord standing by the altar, and He saith: `Smite the knob, and the thresholds shake, And cut them off by the head -- all of them, And their posterity with a sword I do slay, Not flee to them doth the fleer, Nor escape to them doth a fugitive.

2 If they dig through into sheol, From thence doth My hand take them, And if they go up the heavens, From thence I cause them to come down.

3 And if they be hid in the top of Carmel, From thence I search out, and have taken them, And if they be hid from Mine eyes in the bottom of the sea, From thence I command the serpent, And it hath
bitten them.

4 And if they go into captivity before their enemies, From thence I command the sword, And it hath slain them, And I have set Mine eye on them for evil, And not for good.

5 And [it is] the Lord, Jehovah of Hosts, Who is striking against the land, and it melteth, And mourned have all the inhabitants in it, And come up as a flood hath all of it, And it hath sunk -- like the flood
of Egypt.

6 Who is building in the heavens His upper chambers; As to His troop, Upon earth He hath founded it, Who is calling for the waters of the sea, And poureth them out on the face of the land, Jehovah [is]
His name.

7 As sons of Cushim are ye not to Me? O sons of Israel -- an affirmation of Jehovah. Israel did I not bring up out of the land of Egypt? And the Philistines from Caphtor, and Aram from Kir?

8 Lo, the eyes of the Lord Jehovah [are] on the sinful kingdom, And I have destroyed it from off the face of the ground, Only, I destroy not utterly the house of Jacob, An affirmation of Jehovah.

9 For lo, I am commanding, And I have shaken among all the nations the house of Israel, As [one] doth shake with a sieve, And there falleth not a grain [to] the earth.

10 By sword die do all sinners of My people, Who are saying, `Not overtake, or go before, For our sakes, doth evil.'

11 In that day I raise the tabernacle of David, that is fallen, And I have repaired their breaches, And its ruins I do raise up, And I have built it up as in days of old.

12 So that they possess the remnant of Edom, And all the nations on whom My name is called, An affirmation of Jehovah -- doer of this.

13 Lo, days are coming -- an affirmation of Jehovah, And come nigh hath the ploughman to the reaper, And the treader of grapes to the scatterer of seed, And the mountains have dropt juice, And all the
hills do melt.

14 And I have turned back [to] the captivity of My people Israel, And they have built desolate cities, and inhabited, And have planted vineyards, and drunk their wine, And made gardens, and eaten their
fruit.

15 And I have planted them on their own ground, And they are not plucked up any more from off their own ground, That I have given to them, said Jehovah thy God!

Obadiah 1:1-21

The Lord God gave Obadiah news concerning Edom: “I, the Lord, have dispatched an angel with orders for the nations to attack Edom.”

I will make you the weakest and most despised nation.

You live in a mountain stronghold, because your pride makes you feel safe from attack, but you are mistaken.

I will take you down, even if you soar higher than eagles or nest among the stars. I, the Lord, have spoken!

If thieves break in at night, they steal only what they want. And people who harvest grapes always miss some. But, Edom, you are doomed!

Everything you treasure most will be taken from you.

Your allies are untrustworthy. They will drive you out of your own land. Your best friends will trick and trap you, before you realize anything.

Edom, when this happens, I, the Lord, will destroy all your marvelous wisdom.

Warriors from the city of Teman will be terrified, and you of Esau's decendents will be wiped out.

You were cruel to your relatives, the descendants of Jacob. Now you will be destroyed --- forever disgraced

You stood around watching as foreigners entered Jerusalem and stole what they wanted. In fact, you were no better than those foreigners.

Why did you celebrate while such a dreadful disaster struck your relatives? Why were you so pleased when Judah suffered?

They are my people, and you were cruel to them. You rummaged through their towns, sneering and stealing whatever was left.

In their time of torment, you ambushed refugees and handed them over to their attackers.

The day is coming when I, the Lord, will judge the nations. And, Edom, you will pay in full for your deeds.

I forced the people of Judah to drink the wine of my anger on my sacred mountain. Soon the neighboring nations will too —then disappear without a trace.

The Lord’s people who escape will go to Mount Zion, and it will be holy. Then Jacob’s descendants will capture the land of those who stole their land.

Israel will be a fire, and Edom will be kindling consumed by flames. The Lord has spoken!

The people of Israel who live in the Southern Desert will take the land of Edom. Those who live in the hills will capture Philistia, Ephraim, and Samaria. And the tribe of Benjamin will conquer Gilead.

Those who return from captivity will control Phoenicia as far as Zarephath. Captives from Jerusalem who were taken to Sepharad will capture the towns of the Southern Desert.

Those the Lord has saved will live on Mount Zion and rule over Edom. The kingdom will belong to the Lord.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Thus said the Lord Jehovah to Edom, A report we have heard from Jehovah, And an ambassador among nations was sent, `Rise, yea, let us rise against her for battle.'

2 Lo, little I have made thee among nations, Despised [art] thou exceedingly.

3 The pride of thy heart hath lifted thee up, O dweller in clifts of a rock, (A high place [is] his habitation, He is saying in his heart, `Who doth bring me down [to] earth?')

4 If thou dost go up high as an eagle, And if between stars thou dost set thy nest, From thence I bring thee down, An affirmation of Jehovah.

5 If thieves have come in to thee, If spoilers of the night, How hast thou been cut off! Do they not steal their sufficiency? If gatherers have come in to thee, Do they not leave gleanings?

6 How hath Esau been searched out! Flowed out have his hidden things,

7 Unto the border sent thee have all thine allies, Forgotten thee, prevailed over thee, have thy friends, Thy bread they make a snare under thee, There is no understanding in him!

8 Is it not in that day -- an affirmation of Jehovah, That I have destroyed the wise out of Edom, And understanding out of the mount of Esau?

9 And broken down have been thy mighty ones, O Teman, So that every one of the mount of Esau is cut off.

10 For slaughter, for violence [to] thy brother Jacob, Cover thee doth shame, And thou hast been cut off -- to the age.

11 In the day of thy standing over-against, In the day of strangers taking captive his force, And foreigners have entered his gates, And for Jerusalem have cast a lot, Even thou [art] as one of them!

12 And -- thou dost not look on the day of thy brother, On the day of his alienation, Nor dost thou rejoice over sons of Judah, In the day of their destruction, Nor make great thy mouth in a day of distress.

13 Nor come into a gate of My people in a day of their calamity, Nor look, even thou, on its misfortune in a day of its calamity, Nor send forth against its force in a day of its calamity,

14 Nor stand by the breach to cut off its escaped, Nor deliver up its remnant in a day of distress.

15 For near [is] the day of Jehovah, on all the nations, As thou hast done, it is done to thee, Thy deed doth turn back on thine own head.

16 For -- as ye have drunk on My holy mount, Drink do all the nations continually, And they have drunk and have swallowed, And they have been as they have not been.

17 And in mount Zion there is an escape, And it hath been holy, And the house of Jacob have possessed their possessions.

18 And the house of Jacob hath been a fire, And the house of Joseph a flame, And the house of Esau for stubble, And they have burned among them, And they have consumed them, And there is not a
remnant to the house of Esau, For Jehovah hath spoken.

19 And they have possessed the south with the mount of Esau, And the low country with the Philistines, And they have possessed the field of Ephraim, And the field of Samaria, And Benjamin with Gilead.

20 And the removed of this force of the sons of Israel, That [is with] the Canaanites unto Zarephat, And the removed of Jerusalem that [is] with the Sepharad, Possess the cities of the south.

21 And gone up have saviours on mount Zion, To judge the mount of Esau, And the kingdom hath been to Jehovah!'
