Micah 7:1-20

Misery haunts me! I am like the one who gathers summer fruit, when the vines have been picked; There is nothing to eat, no early fig that I crave.

The faithful have left from the earth, no mortal is just! They all hide waiting to shed blood, each one trapping the other.

Their hands succeed at evil; the prince makes demands. The judge is bought for a price, the powerful say what they wish.

The best of them is like a brier, the most honest like a thorn hedge. The day announced by your sentinels! Your punishment has come; now is the time of your confusion.

Put no faith in a friend, do not trust a companion; With her who lies in your embrace watch what you say.

For the son belittles his father, the daughter rises up against her mother, the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law, and your enemies are members of your household.

But as for me, I will look to the Lord, I will wait for God my savior; my God will hear me!

Do not rejoice over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen, I will arise; though I sit in darkness, the Lord is my light.

I will endure the wrath of the Lord because I have sinned against Him --- until He pleads my case, and establishes my right. He will bring me forth to the light; I will observe His righteousness.

When my enemy sees this, shame shall cover her. She once declared, “So, where is the Lord, your God?” My eyes shall see her downfall; now she will be trampled underfoot, like mud in the streets.

It is the day for building walls; on that day your boundaries shall be increased.

It is the day when those from Assyria to Egypt shall come to you, And from Tyre even to the River, from sea to sea, and from mountain to mountain;

And the earth shall be wasted because of humanity --- resulting from their deeds.

Shepherd your people with your staff, the flock of your heritage. That lives apart in a woodland, in the midst of an orchard. Let them feed in Bashan and Gilead, as in the old days;

As in the days when Israel departed Egypt, give us a wondrous sign.

The nations will observe and will be put to shame, in spite of all their strength; They will cover their mouths and not even listen.

They will flick at the dust like a snake, like crawling things on the ground. They will come shivering from their fortresses; they will tremble in fear of You, the Lord, our God.

Who is a God like You, who removes guilt and pardons sin for the remnant of His inheritance --- who is not angry forever, but instead delights in mercy,

And will again take compassion on us, treading underfoot our iniquities? You will cast into the depths of the sea all our sins;

You will demonstrate faithfulness to Jacob, and loyalty to Abraham, As You have sworn to our ancestors way back when.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)
1 My wo [is] to me, for I have been As gatherings of summer-fruit, As gleanings of harvest, There is no cluster to eat, The first-ripe fruit desired hath my soul.

2 Perished hath the kind out of the land, And upright among men -- there are none, All of them for blood lie in wait, Each his brother they hunt [with] a net.

3 On the evil [are] both hands to do [it] well, The prince is asking -- also the judge -- for recompence, And the great -- he is speaking the mischief of his soul, And they wrap it up.

4 Their best one [is] as a brier, The upright one -- than a thorn-hedge, The day of thy watchmen -- Thy visitation -- hath come. Now is their perplexity.

5 Believe not in a friend, trust not in a leader, From her who is lying in thy bosom keep the openings of thy mouth.

6 For a son is dishonouring a father, A daughter hath stood against her mother, A daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law, The enemies of each [are] the men of his house.

7 And I -- in Jehovah I do watch, I do wait for the God of my salvation, Hear me doth my God.

8 Thou dost not rejoice over me, O mine enemy, When I have fallen, I have risen, When I sit in darkness Jehovah is a light to me.

9 The indignation of Jehovah I do bear, For I have sinned against Him, Till that He doth plead my cause, And hath executed my judgment, He doth bring me forth to the light, I look on His righteousness.

10 And see doth mine enemy, And cover her doth shame, Who saith unto me, `Where [is] Jehovah thy God?' Mine eyes do look on her, Now she is for a treading-place, As mire of the out-places.

11 The day to build thy walls! That day -- removed is the limit.

12 That day -- even unto thee it doth come in, From Asshur and the cities of the fortress, And from the fortress even unto the river, And from sea to sea, and mount to mount.

13 And the land hath been for a desolation, Because of its inhabitants, Because of the fruit of their doings.

14 Rule Thou Thy people with Thy rod, The flock of Thine inheritance, Dwelling alone [in] a forest in the midst of Carmel, They enjoy Bashan and Gilead as in days of old.

15 According to the days of thy coming forth out of the land of Egypt, I do shew it wonderful things.

16 See do nations, and they are ashamed of all their might, They lay a hand on the mouth, their ears are deaf.

17 They lick dust as a serpent, as fearful things of earth, They tremble from their enclosures, Of Jehovah our God they are afraid, Yea, they are afraid of Thee.

18 Who [is] a God like Thee? taking away iniquity, And passing by the transgression of the remnant of His inheritance, He hath not retained for ever His anger, Because He -- He delighteth [in] kindness.

19 He doth turn back, He pitieth us, He doth subdue our iniquities, And Thou castest into the depths of the sea all their sins.

20 Thou givest truth to Jacob, kindness to Abraham, That thou hast sworn to our fathers, from the days of antiquity!

Nahum 1:1-15

Nineveh's difficulties. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkesaiou .

God is jealous, and the LORD avenges. The LORD avenges and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on His enemies, and reserves wrath for His enemies.

The LORD puts up with a lot and is mighty and will not simply treat the guilty as though they were innocent; the LORD whose way is in the twister and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.

He rebukes the sea drying it up and dries up all the rivers; Bashan, Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon were destroyed.

The mountains rumble regarding Him, the hills melt, and the earth is burned with His presence, and the world and all that live upon it.

Who can ignore His indignation? and who can live in the fierceness of his anger? His fury is presented like fire, and the rocks are pushed over by him.

The LORD is good, a fortress in times of trouble; and He recognizes those that trust in Him.

But with an overwhelming flood He will cause an utter end of any place, and darkness shall chase His enemies.

What does one dream up against the LORD? He will make an utter end; He will not withhold tribulation the second time.

For while they are entwined together as thorns, and while the drunkards shall be drinking, they shall be devoured as dry out stubble.

He has come out of you that has imagined evil against the LORD, a counselor of Belial.

So says the LORD, "For much rest that they have, and though a large number of them, they shall still be cut down, and He shall pass through. Though I have hurt you, I will hurt you no more.

For now I will rip His restraints off you and will burst your bonds apart.

And the LORD shall give a commandment concerning you that no one else having your name shall exist; out of the house of your god I will remove the graven image and the molten image; I will make it your tomb because you were vile.

Note on the mountains the feet of Him that brings good tidings, and publishes peace! Dear Judah, keep thy solemn feasts, carryout your vows; for Belial shall no longer pass through you. He is gone.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Burden of Nineveh. The Book of the Vision of Nahum the Elkesaiou.

2 A God zealous and avenging [is] Jehovah, An avenger [is] Jehovah, and possessing fury. An avenger [is] Jehovah on His adversaries, And He is watching for His enemies.

3 Jehovah [is] slow to anger, and great in power, And Jehovah doth not entirely acquit, In a hurricane and in a tempest [is] His way, And a cloud [is] the dust of His feet.

4 He is pushing against a sea, and drieth it up, Yea, all the floods He hath made dry, Languishing [are] Bashan and Carmel, Yea, the flower of Lebanon [is] languishing.

5 Mountains have shaken because of Him, And the hills have been melted; And lifted up [is] the earth at His presence, And the world and all dwelling in it.

6 Before His indignation who doth stand? And who riseth up in the heat of His anger? His fury hath been poured out like fire, And the rocks have been broken by Him.

7 Good [is] Jehovah for a strong place in a day of distress. And He knoweth those trusting in Him.

8 And with a flood passing over, An end He maketh of its place, And His enemies doth darkness pursue.

9 What do we devise against Jehovah? An end He is making, arise not twice doth distress.

10 For while princes [are] perplexed, And with their drink are drunken, They have been consumed as stubble fully dried.

11 From thee hath come forth a deviser of evil Against Jehovah -- a worthless counsellor.

12 Thus said Jehovah: Though complete, and thus many, Yet thus they have been cut off, And he hath passed away. And I afflicted thee, I afflict thee no more.

13 And now I break his rod from off thee, And thy bands I do draw away.

14 And commanded concerning thee hath Jehovah, `No more of thy name doth spread abroad, From the house of thy gods I cut off graven and molten image, I appoint thy grave, for thou hast been vile.

15 Lo, on the mountains the feet of one proclaiming tidings, sounding peace! Celebrate, O Judah, thy festivals, complete thy vows, For add no more to pass over into thee doth the worthless, He hath been completely cut off!

Nahum 2:1-13

The scatter has arrived for you (Nineveh). Guard the fortifications and the road! Get ready, and strengthen yourself!

For the Lord is restoring the importance of Jacob, even of Israel, for others have certainly ruined their vines.

The shields of His mighty men are red, even those men are clad in red. In the day He prepares the chariots, they are like blazing iron. The cypress spears are ready.

The chariots run wildly through the streets, they speed back and forth in the open areas. Their appearance is like flashing torches --- darting to and fro like lightning.

He remembers His officers as they stumble about on the road. They hurry to the ramparts as the siege tower is readied.

The flood gates are opened wide, and the palace washes away.

Discreetly she is uncovered and led away captive; her handmaidens shall lead her as with doves cooing, beating their chests.

Nineveh is like a pool whose waters are gone. “Halt! Halt!” they cry, but no one returns.

Plunder the silver and the gold! There is no end of the treasure, or to the value of every precious thing.”

She is desolate, empty, and waste! Hearts melt away, and knees shake; pain is in all the loins, and all their faces turn white.

Where is the den of the lions, and the feeding place of the young lions, where the lion and lioness prowl, and the lion’s cub goes, with no one to bother them?

The lion tore enough food for his cubs, and strangled prey for his lionesses. He has filled his caves with prey, and his dens with flesh.

I am against you, says the Godhead, and I will burn your chariots, and the sword will devour your lions. I will destroy your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers will be silenced forever.
.
Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Come up hath a scatterer to thy face, Keep the bulwark, watch the way, Strengthen the loins, strengthen power mightily.

2 For turned back hath Jehovah to the excellency of Jacob, As [to] the excellency of Israel, For emptied them out have emptiers, And their branches they have marred.

3 The shield of his mighty ones is become red, Men of might [are in] scarlet, With fiery torches [is] the chariot in a day of his preparation, And the firs have been caused to tremble.

4 In out-places shine do the chariots, They go to and fro in broad places, Their appearances [are] like torches, As lightnings they run.

5 He doth remember his honourable ones, They stumble in their goings, They hasten [to] its wall, and prepared is the covering.

6 Gates of the rivers have been opened, And the palace is dissolved.

7 And it is established -- she hath removed, She hath been brought up, And her handmaids are leading as the voice of doves, Tabering on their hearts.

8 And Nineveh [is] as a pool of waters, From of old it [is] -- and they are fleeing! `Stand ye, stand;' and none is turning!

9 Seize ye silver, seize ye gold, And there is no end to the prepared things, [To] the abundance of all desirable vessels.

10 She is empty, yea, emptiness and waste, And the heart hath melted, And the knees have smitten together, And great pain [is] in all loins, And the faces of all of them have gathered paleness.

11 Where [is] the habitation of lionesses? And a feeding-place it [is] for young lions Where walked hath a lion, an old lion, A lion's whelp, and there is none troubling.

12 The lion is tearing parts [for] his whelps, And is strangling for his lionesses, And he doth fill [with] prey his holes, And his habitations [with] rapine.

13 Lo, I [am] against thee, An affirmation of Jehovah of Hosts, And I have burned in smoke its chariot, And thy young lions consume doth a sword, And I have cut off from the land thy prey, And not heard any more is the voice of thy messengers!

Nahum 3:1-19

Misery to Blood City, living through lies, full of prey, with endless plunder!

The cracking of the whip! The rattle of wheels! Galloping horses, jolting chariots,

cavalry charging, swords flashing, spears glittering — and organizers of slaying, piles of bodies; endless corpses. They trip over their corpses.

Because of the continual whoring of this prostitute (this alluring mistress of dark magic) who sells nations with her whoring and families with her witchcraft ----

The Godhead declares, "I am against you. I will pull your robe up over you head. I will expose your privates to the nations, and the kingdoms your shame.

I will throw excrement at you, disgrace you and make you a spectacle.

Then all who see you will recoil away from you. They will say, ‘Ninveh is gone!' Who will mourn for her? Where will I find people to comfort you?

Are you any better than No-Ammon, located among the streams of the Nile, with water surrounding her, the flood her wall of defense?

Ethiopia and Egypt gave her boundless strength. Both Put and Luvim were there to assist you.

Still she went captive into exile, her infants torn to pieces at every intersection. Lots were drawn for her nobles, and all her great men were bound in chains.

So, you also, [Ninveh,] will be drunk ---- your senses completely overcome. You too will seek shelter from the enemy.

All your fortifications will be like fig trees with early ripening figs; the moment they are disturbed, they drop into the mouth of the eater.

Look at your troops! They behave like women! Your country’s gates are wide open to your enemies; fire has consumed their locking beams.

Take up water for the siege! Strengthen your walls! Go down in the clay, mix the mortar, mold the bricks!

There the fire will consume you; and the sword will cut you down; it will devour you like grasshoppers. Make yourselves as many as grasshoppers and locusts!

You had more merchants than stars in the sky. The locust sheds its skin and flies away.

Your guards are like grasshoppers, your marshals like swarms of locusts, which settle on the walls on a cold day, but when the sun rises they take off --- vanishing to where no one knows.

Your shepherds are slumbering, king of Ashur. Your leaders are asleep. Your people are scattered all over the mountains, with no one to gather them.

Your wound cannot be healed. Your injury is fatal. Everyone hearing the news about you claps his hands in joy regarding you. For who has not been affected by your continued cruelty?"

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Wo [to] the city of blood, She is all with lies -- burglary -- full, Prey doth not depart.

2 The sound of a whip, And the sound of the rattling of a wheel, And of a prancing horse, and of a bounding chariot, Of a horseman mounting.

3 And the flame of a sword, and the lightning of a spear, And the abundance of the wounded, And the weight of carcases, Yea, there is no end to the bodies, They stumble over their bodies.

4 Because of the abundance of the fornications of an harlot, The goodness of the grace of the lady of witchcrafts, Who is selling nations by her fornications, And families by her witchcrafts.

5 Lo, I [am] against thee, An affirmation of Jehovah of Hosts, And have removed thy skirts before thy face, And have shewed nations thy nakedness, And kingdoms thy shame,

6 And I have cast upon thee abominations, And dishonoured thee, and made thee as a sight.

7 And it hath come to pass, Each of thy beholders fleeth from thee, And hath said: `Spoiled is Nineveh, Who doth bemoan for her?' Whence do I seek comforters for thee?

8 Art thou better than No-Ammon, That is dwelling among brooks? Waters she hath round about her, Whose bulwark [is] the sea, waters her wall.

9 Cush her might, and Egypt, and there is no end. Put and Lubim have been for thy help.

10 Even she doth become an exile, She hath gone into captivity, Even her sucklings are dashed to pieces At the top of all out-places, And for her honoured ones they cast a lot, And all her great ones have
been bound in fetters.

11 Even thou art drunken, thou art hidden, Even thou dost seek a strong place, because of an enemy.

12 All thy fortresses [are] fig-trees with first-fruits, If they are shaken, They have fallen into the mouth of the eater.

13 Lo, thy people [are] women in thy midst, To thine enemies thoroughly opened Have been the gates of thy land, Consumed hath fire thy bars.

14 Waters of a siege draw for thyself, Strengthen thy fortresses, Enter into mire, and tread on clay, Make strong a brick-kiln.

15 There consume thee doth a fire, Cut thee off doth a sword, It doth consume thee as a cankerworm! Make thyself heavy as the cankerworm, Make thyself heavy as the locust.

16 Multiply thy merchants above the stars of the heavens, The cankerworm hath stripped off, and doth flee away.

17 Thy crowned ones [are] as a locust, And thy princes as great grasshoppers, That encamp in hedges in a day of cold, The sun hath risen, and it doth flee away, And not known is its place where they
are.

18 Slumbered have thy friends, king of Asshur, Rest do thine honourable ones, Scattered have been thy people on the mountains, And there is none gathering.

19 There is no weakening of thy destruction, Grievous [is] thy smiting, All hearing thy fame have clapped the hand at thee, For over whom did not thy wickedness pass continually?

Habakkuk 1:1-17

This is the message that the prophet Habakkuk received by a vision.

How long, Dear Lord, must I beg for help? But you do not listen! “Violence is everywhere!” I cry, but you do not come to the rescue.

Must I forever observe all these evil events? Why must I watch all this misery? Wherever I look, I see ruin and terror. I'm surrounded by people who enjoy to bicker and fight.

The law has become ineffectual, and without justice in the courts. The wicked far outnumber the righteous, so that justice is perverted.

The Lord replied, “Observe the nations; look and be amazed! For I am doing something presently, something you wouldn’t believe even if someone explained it to you.

I am promoting the Babylonians, a cruel and violent people. They will spread across the world and conquer other lands. They are notorious for their cruelty --- doing what they like.

Their horses are faster than cheetahs and fiercer than wolves at dusk. Their charioteers charge from far away. Like eagles, they swoop down to catch their prey.

They come, for the sake of violence. Their hordes advance like a desert wind, sweeping captives ahead of them like dust.

They make light at kings and princes and scorn all their fortresses. They just heap up ramps of earth against their walls and capture them!

They sweep past like the wind and are gone. But they are deeply guilty, for their own power is their god.”

Dear Lord my God, my Holy One, you who are eternal. Your plan cannot be to wipe us out? O Lord, our Rock, you have sent these Babylonians to correct us, to punish us for our many sins.

But you are pure and cannot stand seeing evil. Will you wink at their treachery? Shall you remain quiet while the wicked swallow up people more righteous than they?

Are we only fish to be caught and killed? Are we only sea creatures without leadership?

Must we be strung up on their hooks and captured in their nets while they party?

Then they will worship their nets and burn incense in front of them. They will believe that the nets are the gods who have enriched them!

Will you let them get away with this forever? Will they succeed forever in their heartless conquests?

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 The burden that Habakkuk the prophet hath seen:

2 Till when, O Jehovah, have I cried, And Thou dost not hear? I cry unto Thee -- `Violence,' and Thou dost not save.

3 Why dost Thou shew me iniquity, And perversity dost cause to behold? And spoiling and violence [are] before me, And there is strife, and contention doth lift [itself] up,

4 Therefore doth law cease, And judgment doth not go forth for ever, For the wicked is compassing the righteous, Therefore wrong judgment goeth forth.

5 Look ye on nations, and behold and marvel greatly. For a work He is working in your days, Ye do not believe though it is declared.

6 For, lo, I am raising up the Chaldeans, The bitter and hasty nation, That is going to the broad places of earth, To occupy tabernacles not its own.

7 Terrible and fearful it [is], From itself its judgment and its excellency go forth.

8 Swifter than leopards have been its horses, And sharper than evening wolves, And increased have its horsemen, Even its horsemen from afar come in, They fly as an eagle, hasting to consume.

9 Wholly for violence it doth come in, Their faces swallowing up the east wind, And it doth gather as the sand a captivity.

10 And at kings it doth scoff, And princes [are] a laughter to it, At every fenced place it doth laugh, And it heapeth up dust, and captureth it.

11 Then passed on hath the spirit, Yea, he doth transgress, And doth ascribe this his power to his god.

12 Art not Thou of old, O Jehovah, my God, my Holy One? We do not die, O Jehovah, For judgment Thou hast appointed it, And, O Rock, for reproof Thou hast founded it.

13 Purer of eyes than to behold evil, To look on perverseness Thou art not able, Why dost Thou behold the treacherous? Thou keepest silent when the wicked Doth swallow the more righteous than he,

14 And Thou makest man as fishes of the sea, As a creeping thing -- none ruling over him.

15 Each of them with a hook he hath brought up, He doth catch it in his net, and gathereth it in his drag, Therefore he doth joy and rejoice.

16 Therefore he doth sacrifice to his net, And doth make perfume to his drag, For by them [is] his portion fertile, and his food fat.

17 Doth he therefore empty his net, And continually to slay nations spare not?

Habakkuk 2:1-20

I will stay at my watch and position myself on the ramparts; and I will remain watching to see what He will say to me, and what I will answer when I'm corrected.

And the Lord answered me: Write down the vision, and make it obvious upon tablets, that he who reads it may quickly split.

For the vision is for a specified time; but it speaks of the end, and will occur. If it takes a while, wait for it; it will surely happen, it will not delay.

Look, his soul is lifted up; it is not upright in him; but the just shall live upon his faith.

Indeed, wine betrays the proud man, who does not remain home. He enlarges his appetite as Hell, and like death there are others waiting in the wings. He gathers to himself all nations and collects for himself all type of people.

Shall not all these taunt him, with satire and riddles, and say, "Misery to him who increases what is not his—continually? And to him who loads himself with heavy debts!”

Shall not your debtors arrive suddenly, and those awake who oppress you? Then you will be their plunder.

Because you have plundered many nations, all the survivors will plunder you, because of the bloodshed of men and violence of the land, the cities and all who reside there.

Misery to him who gets evil gain for his house, to position his nest on high, in order to be delivered from the power of misfortune!

You have provided shameful counsel to your house by killing many peoples, and forfeiting your life.

For the stone will scream out from the wall, and the beam of the woodwork will reply.

“Misery to him who builds a town with bloodshed and establishes a city on wickedness!”

Is it not by Lord of Hosts that the people labor to feed fire, and the nations tire themselves for nothing?

For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters fills the seas.

"Misery to him who makes his neighbor drink, pouring out poison until they are drunk, that you may observe their nakedness!”

You will be filled with shame instead of glory. You yourself—drink and demonstrate your uncircumcision! The cup of the Lord’s right hand will be turned against you, and utter shame will rain on your parade!

The violence done to Lebanon will happen to you, as will the plunder of beasts that frightened them, because of the bloodshed of men and violence of the land, of the cities and all who reside in them.

What value is a carved image when its maker has carved or cast the image. Plus a teacher of lies, that its maker trusts in what he has shaped when he fashions mute idols?

Misery to him who says to wood, “Awake!” to the silent stone, “Arise!” Can it teach? It is plated with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in it.

But the Lord is in His holy temple. Let the entire earth remain silent before Him.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 On my charge I stand, and I station myself on a bulwark, and I watch to see what He doth speak against me, and what I do reply to my reproof.

2 And Jehovah answereth me and saith: `Write a vision, and explain on the tables, That he may run who is reading it.

3 For yet the vision [is] for a season, And it breatheth for the end, and doth not lie, If it tarry, wait for it, For surely it cometh, it is not late.

4 Lo, a presumptuous one! Not upright is his soul within him, And the righteous by his stedfastness liveth.

5 And also, because the wine [is] treacherous, A man is haughty, and remaineth not at home, Who hath enlarged as sheol his soul, And is as death that is not satisfied, And doth gather unto itself all the nations, And doth assemble unto itself all the peoples,

6 Do not these -- all of them -- against him a simile taken up, And a moral of acute sayings for him, And say, Wo [to] him who is multiplying [what is] not his? Till when also is he multiplying to himself heavy pledges?

7 Do not thy usurers instantly rise up, And those shaking thee awake up, And thou hast been for a spoil to them?

8 Because thou hast spoiled many nations, Spoil thee do all the remnant of the peoples, Because of man's blood, and of violence [to] the land, [To] the city, and [to] all dwelling in it.

9 Wo [to] him who is gaining evil gain for his house, To set on high his nest, To be delivered from the hand of evil,

10 Thou hast counselled a shameful thing to thy house, To cut off many peoples, and sinful [is] thy soul.

11 For a stone from the wall doth cry out, And a holdfast from the wood answereth it.

12 Wo [to] him who is building a city by blood, And establishing a city by iniquity.

13 Lo, is it not from Jehovah of Hosts And peoples are fatigued for fire, And nations for vanity are weary?

14 For full is the earth of the knowledge of the honour of Jehovah, As waters cover [the bottom of] a sea.

15 Wo [to] him who is giving drink to his neighbour, Pouring out thy bottle, and also making drunk, In order to look on their nakedness.

16 Thou hast been filled -- shame without honour, Drink thou also, and be uncircumcised, Turn round unto thee doth the cup of the right hand of Jehovah, And shameful spewing [is] on thine honour.

17 For violence [to] Lebanon doth cover thee, And spoil of beasts doth affright them, Because of man's blood, and of violence [to] the land, [To] the city, and [to] all dwelling in it.

18 What profit hath a graven image given That its former hath graven it? A molten image and teacher of falsehood, That trusted hath the former on his own formation -- to make dumb idols?

19 Wo [to] him who is saying to wood, `Awake,' `Stir up,' to a dumb stone, It a teacher! lo, it is overlaid -- gold and silver, And there is no spirit in its midst.

20 And Jehovah [is] in His holy temple, Be silent before Him, all the earth!

Habakkuk 3:1-19

This is the prayer of triumph sung by Habakkuk before the Lord:

Dear Lord, now I have heard Your report, and I worship You in awe for the fearful things You are going to do. We are needy, once again start helping us, as you did in times gone by. Show us Your power to save us. In your anger, remember mercy.

I see God moving across the deserts from Mount Sinai. His brilliant splendor fills the earth and sky. His glory fills the heavens, and the earth praises Him! God is wonderful!

From his hands explode rays of brilliant light. He rejoices in His awesome power.

Plagues march before Him; plagues follows close behind.

He stops standing still for a moment, gazing at the earth. Then He disrupts nations, scattering old mountains and leveling the hills. His power is just the same as ever!

I see the people of Cushan and of Midian in mortal fear.

Was it in anger, Lord, You smote the rivers and parted the sea? Were You displeased with them? No, You were sending Your chariots of salvation! All saw Your ability!

You split the earth at your command!

The mountains remained and trembled. Onward swept the raging water. The mighty deep cried out, announcing its surrender to the Lord.

The lofty sun and moon began to fade, obscured by brilliance from your arrows and the flashing of your glittering spear.

You marched across the land in terrible anger and flattened the nations in your wrath.

You went out to save your chosen people. You crushed the head of the wicked and laid bare his skeleton from head to toe.

You destroyed with their own weapons those who came out like a twister, imagining Israel an easy prey.

Your horsemen marched across the sea; the mighty waters backed up.

I shake when I hear all this; my lips quiver with fear. My legs give way beneath me, and I shake in terror. I will quietly wait for the day of trouble to come upon the people who invade us.

Even though the fig trees have been destroyed --- without blossom or fruit left; though the olive crops all fail, and the fields lie fallow; even if the flocks die in the fields and the cattle barns are empty,

yet I will praise the Lord; I will be happy in the God of my salvation.

The Lord God is my power. He will give me the speed of a deer and bring me safely over the mountains.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet concerning erring ones:

2 O Jehovah, I heard thy report, I have been afraid, O Jehovah, Thy work! in midst of years revive it, In the midst of years Thou makest known In anger Thou dost remember mercy.

3 God from Teman doth come, The Holy One from mount Paran. Pause! Covered the heavens hath His majesty, And His praise hath filled the earth.

4 And the brightness is as the light, He hath rays out of His hand, And there -- the hiding of His strength.

5 Before Him goeth pestilence, And a burning flame goeth forth at His feet.

6 He hath stood, and He measureth earth, He hath seen, and He shaketh off nations, And scatter themselves do mountains of antiquity, Bowed have the hills of old, The ways of old [are] His.

7 Under sorrow I have seen tents of Cushan, Tremble do curtains of the land of Midian.

8 Against rivers hath Jehovah been wroth? Against rivers [is] Thine anger? Against the sea [is] Thy wrath? For Thou dost ride on Thy horses -- Thy chariots of salvation?

9 Utterly naked Thou dost make Thy bow, Sworn are the tribes -- saying, `Pause!' [With] rivers Thou dost cleave the earth.

10 Seen thee -- pained are mountains, An inundation of waters hath passed over, Given forth hath the deep its voice, High its hands it hath lifted up.

11 Sun -- moon -- hath stood -- a habitation, At the light thine arrows go on, At the brightness, the glittering of thy spear.

12 In indignation Thou dost tread earth, In anger Thou dost thresh nations.

13 Thou hast gone forth for the salvation of Thy people, For salvation with Thine anointed, Thou hast smitten the head of the house of the wicked, Laying bare the foundation unto the neck. Pause!

14 Thou hast pierced with his staves the head of his leaders, They are tempestuous to scatter me, Their exultation [is] as to consume the poor in secret.

15 Thou hast proceeded through the sea with Thy horses -- the clay of many waters.

16 I have heard, and my belly trembleth, At the noise have my lips quivered, Rottenness doth come into my bones, And in my place I do tremble, That I rest for a day of distress, At the coming up of the
people, he overcometh it.

17 Though the fig-tree doth not flourish, And there is no produce among vines, Failed hath the work of the olive, And fields have not yielded food, Cut off from the fold hath been the flock, And there is
no herd in the stalls.

18 Yet I, in Jehovah I exult, I do joy in the God of my salvation.

19 Jehovah the Lord [is] my strength, And He doth make my feet like hinds, And on my high-places causeth me to tread. To the overseer with my stringed instruments!

Zephaniah 1:1-18

The word of the Lord which came to Cushi's son Zephaniah, the grandson of Gedaliah, the great grandson of Amariah, the great-great grandson of Hezekiah, during the days of Amon's son Josiah, king of Judah.

"I will one day utterly consume all things on the face of the earth," says the Lord.

"I will consume man and beast, the birds of the air, the fish of the sea, and all the trip hazards along with the wicked. I will separate man from the face of the land, says the Lord.

I will work against Judah, and against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. I will kill in this place what is left of the Baal worshipers, and the name of the idolatrous priests along with the priests,

and those who bow down on the rooftops to the stars above; those who worship and swear oaths by the Lord and yet swear by Moloch [Canaanite deity for child sacrifice] ; those who have turned away from following the Lord, who have not sought the Lord nor regard Him. Be silent before the Lord God! The Lord's Day is close. The Lord has prepared the sacrifice; He has dedicated His guests.

On the day of the Lord’s sacrifice, I will punish the officials and the king’s sons, and all who wrap themselves with foreign attire.

On that time I will punish all who step over the threshold, who fill their masters’ abode with violence and lies.

At that time, says the Lord, a cry will be heard from the Fish Gate, a wail from the Second Quarter, and a loud crash from the hills.

Wail, you inhabitants of brick and mortar! For all the merchants are destroyed; all those who regard silver are dead.

At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish the men who are comfortable seated on their garbage, who say in their heart, “The Lord does nothing [or doesn't exist].

What they value will be plundered, and their houses ruined. Though they construct residences, they will not inhabit them; though they plant vineyards, they will not drink from their wine.

The great day of the Lord is near, and coming quickly. The sound of the day of the Lord is bitter --- mighty man shall wail.

That day is a day of wrath, of trouble and distress, of ruin and desolation, of darkness and gloom, of smoke and blackness,

a day of trumpet and alarms against the fortified cities and the high towers.

I will bring distress on men, so that they will walk blindly. Because they have sinned against the Lord, their blood will be emptied like dust, and their flesh like poop.

Neither their silver nor gold will save them in that time of the Lord’s wrath. But the whole earth will be consumed by His fiery jealousy, for He will make a sudden end of all those then dwelling on the earth."

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 A word of Jehovah that hath been unto Zephaniah son of Cushi, son of Gedaliah, son of Amariah, son of Hezikiah, in the days of Josiah son of Amoz, king of Judah:

2 I utterly consume all from off the face of the ground, An affirmation of Jehovah.

3 I consume man and beast, I consume fowl of the heavens, and fishes of the sea, And the stumbling-blocks -- the wicked, And I have cut off man from the face of the ground, An affirmation of Jehovah,

4 And stretched out My hand against Judah, And against all inhabiting Jerusalem, And cut off from this place the remnant of Baal, The name of the idolatrous priests, with the priests,

5 And those bowing themselves On the roofs to the host of the heavens, And those bowing themselves, Swearing to Jehovah, and swearing by Malcham,

6 And those removing from after Jehovah, And who have not sought Jehovah, nor besought Him.

7 Hush! because of the Lord Jehovah, For near [is] a day of Jehovah, For prepared hath Jehovah a sacrifice, He hath sanctified His invited ones.

8 And it hath come to pass, In the day of the sacrifice of Jehovah, That I have laid a charge on the heads, And on sons of the king, And on all putting on strange clothing.

9 And I have laid a charge on every one Who is leaping over the threshold in that day, Who are filling the house of their masters [With] violence and deceit.

10 And there hath been in that day, An affirmation of Jehovah, The noise of a cry from the fish-gate, And of a howling from the Second, And of great destruction from the hills.

11 Howl, ye inhabitants of the hollow place, For cut off hath been all the merchant people, Cut off have been all bearing silver.

12 And it hath come to pass, at that time, I search Jerusalem with lights, And I have laid a charge on the men Who are hardened on their preserved things, Who are saying in their heart: Jehovah doth no
good, nor doth He evil.

13 And their wealth hath been for a spoil, And their houses for desolation, And they have built houses, and do not inhabit, And they have planted vineyards, And they do not drink their wine.

14 Near [is] the great day of Jehovah, Near, and hasting exceedingly, The noise of the day of Jehovah, Bitterly shriek there doth a mighty one.

15 A day of wrath [is] that day, A day of adversity and distress, A day of waste and desolation, A day of darkness and gloominess, A day of cloud and thick darkness.

16 A day of trumpet and shouting against the fenced cities, And against the high corners.

17 And I have sent distress to men, And they have walked as the blind, For against Jehovah they have sinned, And poured out is their blood as dust, And their flesh [is] as dung.

18 Even their silver, even their gold, Is not able to deliver them in a day of the wrath of Jehovah, And in the fire of His jealousy consumed is the whole land, For only a hastened end doth He make Of all the inhabitants of the land!

Zephaniah 2:1-15

Unite, shameless nation,

before the decree is fulfilled, before the day passes like dust, before the fierce anger of the Lord arrives, before the day of the Lord’s anger comes upon you.

Seek the Lord, all you humble of the land, who carry out His judgment. Seek righteousness and humility. Maybe you will be hidden on the day of the Lord’s anger.

For Gaza will be given up, and Ashkelon a desolation; Ashdod will be driven out at noon, and Ekron uprooted.

Misery to seacoast citizens, the nation of Kerethites! The word of the Lord is against you, O Canaan, land of the Philistines: I will destroy you, so that there will be no one left.

The seacoast will be pastures, with meadows for shepherds and folds for flocks.

The coast will be for the survivors of the house of Judah, on which they will feed. In the houses of Ashkelon they will rest at evening. For the Lord their God will visit them and restore their fortunes.

I have heard these taunts of Moab, and the partying of the Ammonites, by which they have poked fun at My people, and made claims regarding their territory.

Therefore, as I exist, says the Godhead, the God of Israel, surely Moab will be like Sodom, and the Ammonites like Gomorrah— a place of weeds and salt pits, and a endless desolation. The survivors of My Chosen will plunder them, and will possess them.

This will they receive for their pride, because they taunted and boasted against the people of the Godhead.

The Lord will be dreadful to them, for He will weaken all the gods of the earth; men will worship Him, every one from his local, all the lands of the nations.

You also, O Ethiopians, will be slain by My sword.

And He will stretch out His hand against the north and destroy Assyria; and He will make Nineveh a desolation, and dry like the desert.

Herds will rest in her midst, beasts of all sorts; jackdaws and owls will roost on her columns, their voices screeching in the windows desolation will be on the doorstep; for He will uncover the rafters.

This is the prideful city that dwelt assured of itself, that said in her heart, “I exist, and there is no one besides me.” How has she become a desolation, a place for beasts to rest! Everyone who travels by her will hiss and shake his fist.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Bend yourselves, yea, bend ye, O nation not desired,

2 Before the bringing forth of a statute, As chaff hath the day passed on, While yet not come in upon you doth the heat of the anger of Jehovah, While yet not come in upon you doth a day of the anger of Jehovah,

3 Seek Jehovah, all ye humble of the land, Who His judgment have done, Seek ye righteousness, seek humility, It may be ye are hidden in a day of the anger of Jehovah.

4 For Gaza is forsaken, And Ashkelon [is] for a desolation, Ashdod! at noon they do cast her forth, And Ekron is rooted up.

5 Ho! O inhabitants of the sea-coast, Nation of the Cherethites, A word of Jehovah [is] against you, Canaan, land of the Philistines, And I have destroyed thee without an inhabitant.

6 And the sea-coast hath been habitations, Cottages [for] shepherds, and folds [for] a flock.

7 And the coast hath been for the remnant of the house of Judah, By them they have pleasure, In houses of Ashkelon at even they lie down, For inspect them doth Jehovah their God, And He hath turned back [to] their captivity.

8 I have heard the reproach of Moab, And the revilings of the sons of Ammon, Wherewith they reproached My people, And magnify [themselves] against their border.

9 Therefore, I live, An affirmation of Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel, Surely, Moab is as Sodom, And the sons of Ammon as Gomorrah, An overrunning of nettles and salt-pits, And a desolation -- unto the age. A residue of My people do seize them, And a remnant of My nation inherit them.

10 This [is] to them for their arrogancy, Because they have reproached, And they magnify [themselves] against the people of Jehovah of Hosts.

11 Fearful [is] Jehovah against them, For He made bare all gods of the land, And bow themselves to Him, each from his place, Do all islanders of the nations.

12 Also ye, O Cushim, pierced of My sword [are] they.

13 And He stretcheth His hand against the north, And doth destroy Asshur, And he setteth Nineveh for a desolation, A dry land like a wilderness.

14 And crouched in her midst have droves, Every beast of the nation, Both pelican and hedge-hog in her knobs lodge, A voice doth sing at the window, `Destruction [is] at the threshold, For the cedar work is exposed.'

15 This [is] the exulting city that is dwelling confidently, That is saying in her heart, `I [am], and beside me there is none,' How hath she been for a desolation, A crouching-place for beasts, Every one passing by her doth hiss, He doth shake his hand!

Zephaniah 3:1-20

"Misery for her who is rebellious and defiled, the oppressing city.

She doesn't obey what has been told to her ---- accepts no correction. She does not trust in the Lord, and ignores her God.

Her princes living there are roaring lions. Her judges are evening wolves --- leaving nothing sit until morning.

Her prophets are reckless, treacherous men; her priests have profaned the sanctuary and misapply the law --- twisting it to their own interpretations.

The Lord is righteous in her midst ---- doing no unrighteousness. Every morning He displays His justice openly --- without fail, But the unjust are shameless.

I have destroyed nations, their fortresses ruined. I have emptied their streets, with no one passing by. Their cities are destroyed; there is no one present.

I said, “Surely you will fear Me; and you will receive correction.” So her habitation will continue, according to all that I have promised. But they were even more eager to be corrupt.

Therefore wait for Me, declares the Lord, until the day when I rise up to seize the plunder; for My decision is to gather nations, to assemble kingdoms, to pour on them My indignation, all My fierce anger; for all the earth will be consumed with the fire of My jealousy.

Then I will restore to the nations a pure speech that all of them may call on the name of the Lord, to serve Him united.

Past the rivers of Ethiopia My worshipers, the daughter of My dispersed ones, will bring My offering.

On that day you will not be ashamed for all your deeds by which you have transgressed against Me. I will have removed from your presents those who rejoice in your pride, and you will no longer be arrogant in My holy mountain.

But I will leave among you a meek and humble people, and they will trust in the name of the Lord.

The survivors of Israel will do no unrighteousness, nor speak lies; nor will a lying tongue be found in their mouth; for they will eat and rest, and no one will scare them.

Sing, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O Israel! Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, O daughter of Jerusalem!

The Lord has forgotten your judgments, He has removed your enemies. The King of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; you will observe no more evil.

On that day it will be said to Jerusalem: Fear not, O Zion; let your hands be diligent.

The Lord your God is in your midst, a Mighty One, who will save. He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will renew you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.

I will gather those who grieve for the appointed festival, which is a reproach and burden on you.

At that time I will deal with all who oppress you; I will save the lame and gather the outcast. I will provide for them praise and fame in every land where they have been put to shame.

At that time I will bring you in, and gather you; for I will make you famous and praised among all peoples of the earth, when I restore your fortunes before your eyes!" says the Lord.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Wo [to] the rebellious and polluted, The oppressing city!

2 She hath not hearkened to the voice, She hath not accepted instruction, In Jehovah she hath not trusted, Unto her God she hath not drawn near.

3 Her heads in her midst [are] roaring lions, Her judges [are] evening wolves, They have not gnawn the bone in the morning.

4 Her prophets unstable -- men of treachery, Her priests have polluted the sanctuary, They have violated the law.

5 Jehovah [is] righteous in her midst, He doth not do perverseness, Morning by morning His judgment he giveth to the light, It hath not been lacking, And the perverse doth not know shame.

6 I have cut off nations, Desolated have been their chief ones, I have laid waste their out-places without any passing by, Destroyed have been their cities, Without man, without inhabitant.

7 I have said: Only, ye do fear Me, Ye do accept instruction, And her habitation is not cut off, All that I have appointed for her, But they have risen early, They have corrupted all their doings.

8 Therefore, wait for Me -- an affirmation of Jehovah, For the day of My rising for prey, For My judgment [is] to gather nations, To assemble kingdoms, To pour out on them Mine indignation, All the heat of Mine anger, For by the fire of My jealousy consumed is all the earth.

9 For then do I turn unto peoples a pure lip, To call all of them by the name of Jehovah, To serve Him [with] one shoulder.

10 From beyond the rivers of Cush, my supplicants, The daughter of My scattered ones, Do bring My present.

11 In that day thou art not ashamed because of any of thine actions, Wherewith thou hast transgressed against Me, For then do I turn aside from thy midst The exulting ones of thine excellency, And thou dost add no more to be haughty, In My holy mountain.

12 And I have left in thy midst a people humble and poor, And they have trusted in the name of Jehovah.

13 The remnant of Israel do no perversity, nor speak lies, Nor found in their mouth is a deceitful tongue, For they have delight, and have lain down, And there is none troubling.

14 Cry aloud, O daughter of Zion, shout, O Israel, Rejoice and exult with the whole heart, O daughter of Jerusalem.

15 Jehovah hath turned aside thy judgments, He hath faced thine enemy, The king of Israel, Jehovah, [is] in thy midst, Thou seest evil no more.

16 In that day it is said to Jerusalem, `Fear not, O Zion, let not thy hands be feeble.

17 Jehovah thy God [is] in thy midst, A mighty one doth save, He rejoiceth over thee with joy, He doth work in His love, He joyeth over thee with singing.'

18 Mine afflicted from the appointed place I have gathered, from thee they have been, Bearing for her sake reproach.

19 Lo, I am dealing with all afflicting thee at that time, And I have saved the halting one, And the driven out ones I do gather, And have set them for a praise and for a name, In all the land of their shame.

20 At that time I bring you in, Even at the time of My assembling you, For I give you for a name, and for a praise, Among all peoples of the land, In My turning back [to] your captivity before your eyes, said Jehovah!
