Matthew 26:1-75

When Jesus finished teaching, he informed his disciples,

“You realize that in a couple of days is Passover. That is when the Son of Man will be handed over to his enemies and nailed on a cross.”

At the same time the chief priests and leaders were meeting at the home of Caiaphas the high priest.

They planned how they might sneakily arrest and execute Jesus.

But they said, “We must not do it during Passover, because the people will riot.”

Jesus was in the town of Bethany, eating at Simon's house, who once had leprosy.

A woman entered with a bottle of expensive perfume and poured it upon Jesus' head.

But when his disciples saw this, they were irritated and complained, “Such waste.

We could have sold this perfume for a lot and given it to the poor.”

Jesus knew what they were thinking, and said:

Don't bothering this woman? She has done a kindness for me.

The poor with you, but you won’t always have me.

She has poured perfume on My body to prepare it for burial.

You may be sure that wherever the good news is explained all over the world, people will remember what she has done. And they will tell others.

Judas Iscariot was one of the twelve disciples. He went to the chief priests

and asked, “How much will you give me if I help you arrest Jesus?” They paid Judas 30 silver coins,

and from then on he started seeking for a good way to betray Jesus.

On the first day of the Festival of Matzo, Jesus' disciples came to Him and asked, “Where do you want us to prepare the Passover meal?”

Jesus told them to go to a certain man in the city and tell him, “Our teacher says, ‘My time has come! I want to eat the Passover meal with my disciples in your home.’ “

They did as Jesus told them and prepared the meal.

When Jesus was eating with his 12 disciples that evening,

Jesus said, “One of you will surely hand me over to my enemies.”

The disciples were very sad, and each one said to Jesus, “Lord, is it I!”

He answered, “One of you men who has eaten with me from this dish will betray me.

The Son of Man will die, as the Scriptures say. But it’s going to be horrible for the one who betrays me! That man would be better off if he had never existed.”

Judas said, “Teacher, you surely don’t mean me!”

“That’s what you say!” Jesus replied. But later, Judas did betray him.

During the meal Jesus took some bread in his hands. He blessed the bread and broke it. Then he gave it to his disciples and said, “Take this and eat it. This is my body.”

Jesus picked up a cup of wine and gave thanks to God. He then gave it to his disciples and said, “Take this and drink it.

This is my blood, and with it God makes his agreement with you. It will be spilt, so that many people will have their sins forgiven.

From now on I am not going to drink any wine, until I drink new wine with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

Then they sang a chorus and headed out to the Mount of Olives.

Jesus said to his disciples, “During this very night, all of you will reject me, as the Scriptures say,

‘I will strike down the shepherd, and the sheep scatter.’

But after I am raised to life, I will go to Galilee ahead of you.”

Peter spoke up, “Even if all the others reject you, I never will!”

Jesus replied, “I promise you that before a rooster crows tonight, you will repeat 3 times that you don’t know me.”

However, Peter said, “Even if I Must die with you, I will never say I don’t know you.”

All the others said the same thing.

Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane. When they arrived, Jesus told them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”

Jesus took along Peter and the two brothers, James and John. He was very sad and concerned, and He said to them, “I am so sad that I feel as if I am dying. Stay here and keep awake with Me.”

Jesus continued on a little way. Then he knelt with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if at all possible, don’t make Me suffer by having Me drink from this cup. But do what You want, and not what I want.”

He came back and found his disciples sleeping. So he said to Peter, “Can’t any of you stay awake with me for just one hour?

Stay awake and pray that you won’t be tested. You want to do the right thing, but you are weak.”

Again Jesus went to pray and said, “My Father, if there is no other way, and I must suffer, I will still do what you want.”

Jesus came back and found them sleeping again. They could not keep their eyes open.

He left them and repeated the same prayer again.

Finally, Jesus returned to his disciples and said, “Are you still sleeping and resting? The time has arrived for the Son of Man to be handed over to sinners.

Stand up! Let’s go. The one who will betray me is here.”

Jesus was still speaking, when Judas the betrayer approached. He was one of the 12 disciples, and a large mob armed with swords and clubs came with him. They had been sent by the chief priests and the leaders.

Judas had told them earlieer, “Arrest the man I greet with a kiss.”

Judas walked right up to Jesus and said, “Hello, teacher.” Then Judas kissed Jesus.

Jesus replied, “My friend, why are you here?”

The men grabbed Jesus and arrested him.

One of Jesus' followers pulled out a sword. He struck the servant of the high priest slicing off his ear.

But Jesus told him, “Put your sword away. Anyone who lives fighting will die fighting.

Don’t you realize that I could ask My Father, and immediately He would send Me more than 12 legions of angels?

But then, how could the words of the Scriptures come true, which say such must happen?”

Jesus said to the mob, “Why do you come with swords and clubs to arrest me like a criminal? Day after day I sat and taught in the temple, and you didn’t arrest me.

But all this occurred, so that what the prophets wrote would be fulfilled.”

All of Jesus' disciples left him and ran away.

After Jesus was arrested, he was led off to the house of Caiaphas the high priest. The nation’s leaders and the teachers of the Law of Moses were meeting there.

But Peter followed along at a distance and came to the courtyard of the high priest’s palace. He went in and sat down among the guards to see what was going to happen.

The chief priests and the whole council wanted to put Jesus to death. So they tried to find some people who would lie concerning him in court.

But they found nothing, even though many came and telling lies. Finally, 2 men came forward

and said, “This man claimed that he would tear down God’s temple and rebuild it again in 3 days.”

The high priest stood and asked Jesus, “Why don’t you say something in your own defense? Don’t you hear the charges they are making against you?”

But Jesus did not reply. So the high priest said, “With the living God looking on, you must tell the truth. Tell us, are you the Messiah, the Son of God?”

“You said it!” Jesus answered. “But I tell all of you, soon you will observe the Son of Man sitting at the right side of God All-Powerful and arriving on heavenly clouds.’”

The high priest then ripped his robe saying, “This man claims to be God! We don’t need any more witnesses! You have heard what he said.

What sat you?”

They answered, “He is guilty and deserves death!”

Then they spit in Jesus' face and punched him with their fists. Others slapped him

and said, “So, you suppose you are the Messiah! Tell us who hit you!”

While Peter was seated in the courtyard, a servant girl came up to him and said, “You were with Jesus from Galilee.”

But in front of everyone Peter said, “No way! I don’t know what you are talking about!”

When Peter had gone out to the gate, another servant girl saw him and said to some people there, “This man was with Jesus from Nazareth.”

Again Peter denied it, and this time he swore, “I don’t even know that man!”

A little while later some people standing there walked over to Peter and said, “We know that you are one of them. We can tell it because you sound like someone from Galilee.”

Peter cursed and swore, “I don’t know that man!”

Immediately a rooster crowed,

and Peter remembered what Jesus had said... Then Peter left and cried bitterly.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 And it came to pass, when Jesus finished all these words, he said to his disciples,

2 `Ye have known that after two days the passover cometh, and the Son of Man is delivered up to be crucified.'

3 Then were gathered together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, to the court of the chief priest who was called Caiaphas;

4 and they consulted together that they might take Jesus by guile, and kill [him],

5 and they said, `Not in the feast, that there may not be a tumult among the people.'

6 And Jesus having been in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,

7 there came to him a woman having an alabaster box of ointment, very precious, and she poured on his head as he is reclining (at meat).

8 And having seen [it], his disciples were much displeased, saying, `To what purpose [is] this waste?

9 for this ointment could have been sold for much, and given to the poor.'

10 And Jesus having known, said to them, `Why do ye give trouble to the woman? for a good work she wrought for me;

11 for the poor always ye have with you, and me ye have not always;

12 for she having put this ointment on my body -- for my burial she did [it].

13 Verily I say to you, Wherever this good news may be proclaimed in the whole world, what this [one] did shall also be spoken of -- for a memorial of her.'

14 Then one of the twelve, who is called Judas Iscariot, having gone unto the chief priests, said,

15 `What are ye willing to give me, and I will deliver him up to you?' and they weighed out to him thirty silverlings,

16 and from that time he was seeking a convenient season to deliver him up.

17 And on the first [day] of the unleavened food came the disciples near to Jesus, saying to him, `Where wilt thou [that] we may prepare for thee to eat the passover?'

18 and he said, `Go away to the city, unto such a one, and say to him, The Teacher saith, My time is nigh; near thee I keep the passover, with my disciples;'

19 and the disciples did as Jesus appointed them, and prepared the passover.

20 And evening having come, he was reclining (at meat) with the twelve,

21 and while they are eating, he said, `Verily I say to you, that one of you shall deliver me up.'

22 And being grieved exceedingly, they began to say to him, each of them, `Is it I, Sir?'

23 And he answering said, `He who did dip with me the hand in the dish, he will deliver me up;

24 the Son of Man doth indeed go, as it hath been written concerning him, but wo to that man through whom the Son of Man is delivered up! good it were for him if that man had not been born.'

25 And Judas -- he who delivered him up -- answering said, `Is it I, Rabbi?' He saith to him, `Thou hast said.'

26 And while they were eating, Jesus having taken the bread, and having blessed, did brake, and was giving to the disciples, and said, `Take, eat, this is my body;'

27 and having taken the cup, and having given thanks, he gave to them, saying, `Drink ye of it -- all;

28 for this is my blood of the new covenant, that for many is being poured out -- to remission of sins;

29 and I say to you, that I may not drink henceforth on this produce of the vine, till that day when I may drink it with you new in the reign of my Father.'

30 And having sung a hymn, they went forth to the mount of the Olives;

31 then saith Jesus to them, `All ye shall be stumbled at me this night; for it hath been written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad;

32 but, after my having risen, I will go before you to Galilee.'

33 And Peter answering said to him, `Even if all shall be stumbled at thee, I will never be stumbled.'

34 Jesus said to him, `Verily I say to thee, that, this night, before cock-crowing, thrice thou wilt deny me.'

35 Peter saith to him, `Even if it may be necessary for me to die with thee, I will not deny thee;' in like manner also said all the disciples.

36 Then come with them doth Jesus to a place called Gethsemane, and he saith to the disciples, `Sit ye here, till having gone away, I shall pray yonder.'

37 And having taken Peter, and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful, and to be very heavy;

38 then saith he to them, `Exceedingly sorrowful is my soul -- unto death; abide ye here, and watch with me.'

39 And having gone forward a little, he fell on his face, praying, and saying, `My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as Thou.'

40 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them sleeping, and he saith to Peter, `So! ye were not able one hour to watch with me!

41 watch, and pray, that ye may not enter into temptation: the spirit indeed is forward, but the flesh weak.'

42 Again, a second time, having gone away, he prayed, saying, `My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from me except I drink it, Thy will be done;'

43 and having come, he findeth them again sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.

44 And having left them, having gone away again, he prayed a third time, saying the same word;

45 then cometh he unto his disciples, and saith to them, `Sleep on henceforth, and rest! lo, the hour hath come nigh, and the Son of Man is delivered up to the hands of sinners.

46 Rise, let us go; lo, he hath come nigh who is delivering me up.'

47 And while he is yet speaking, lo, Judas, one of the twelve did come, and with him a great multitude, with swords and sticks, from the chief priests and elders of the people.

48 And he who did deliver him up did give them a sign, saying, `Whomsoever I will kiss, it is he: lay hold on him;'

49 and immediately, having come to Jesus, he said, `Hail, Rabbi,' and kissed him;

50 and Jesus said to him, `Comrade, for what art thou present?' Then having come near, they laid hands on Jesus, and took hold on him.

51 And lo, one of those with Jesus, having stretched forth the hand, drew his sword, and having struck the servant of the chief priest, he took off his ear.

52 Then saith Jesus to him, `Turn back thy sword to its place; for all who did take the sword, by the sword shall perish;

53 dost thou think that I am not able now to call upon my Father, and He will place beside me more than twelve legions of messengers?

54 how then may the Writings be fulfilled, that thus it behoveth to happen?'

55 In that hour said Jesus to the multitudes, `As against a robber ye did come forth, with swords and sticks, to take me! daily with you I was sitting teaching in the temple, and ye did not lay hold on me;

56 but all this hath come to pass, that the Writings of the prophets may be fulfilled;' then all the disciples, having left him, fled.

57 And those laying hold on Jesus led [him] away unto Caiaphas the chief priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together,

58 and Peter was following him afar off, unto the court of the chief priest, and having gone in within, he was sitting with the officers, to see the end.

59 And the chief priests, and the elders, and all the council, were seeking false witness against Jesus, that they might put him to death,

60 and they did not find; and many false witnesses having come near, they did not find; and at last two false witnesses having come near,

61 said, `This one said, I am able to throw down the sanctuary of God, and after three days to build it.'

62 And the chief priest having stood up, said to him, `Nothing thou dost answer! what do these witness against thee?

63 and Jesus was silent. And the chief priest answering said to him, `I adjure thee, by the living God, that thou mayest say to us, if thou art the Christ -- the Son of God.'

64 Jesus saith to him, `Thou hast said; nevertheless I say to you, hereafter ye shall see the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of the power, and coming upon the clouds, of the heaven.'

65 Then the chief priest rent his garments, saying, -- `He hath spoken evil; what need have we yet of witnesses? lo, now ye heard his evil speaking;

66 what think ye?' and they answering said, `He is worthy of death.'

67 Then did they spit in his face and buffet him, and others did slap,

68 saying, `Declare to us, O Christ, who he is that struck thee?'

69 And Peter without was sitting in the court, and there came near to him a certain maid, saying, `And thou wast with Jesus of Galilee!'

70 And he denied before all, saying, `I have not known what thou sayest.'

71 And he having gone forth to the porch, another female saw him, and saith to those there, `And this one was with Jesus of Nazareth;'

72 and again did he deny with an oath -- `I have not known the man.'

73 And after a little those standing near having come, said to Peter, `Truly thou also art of them, for even thy speech doth make thee manifest.'

74 Then began he to anathematise, and to swear -- `I have not known the man;' and immediately did a cock crow,

75 and Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, he having said to him -- `Before cock-crowing, thrice thou wilt deny me;' and having gone without, he did weep bitterly.

Ah yes, Jesus in the Garden. So who witnessed this? Matthew? But the story doesn't say so. Whoever made it up couldn't keep their plot holes covered. :wink:

Well, Peter, James and John were there. And remember Christ returned for sometime after He arose from the dead, and the Holy Spirit was to return to remind them of the many things Jesus had said and did. There are no plot holes, in fact, there are many answers without questions.

No one would watch with him. Do you read your own Bible? There were no witnesses. When did he tell them the whole story? You have to make up stuff to answer these questions. :lol:

Interesting; however, you do realize that all the books of the Bible originally were not broken down into chapters and verses. A man named Stephen Langton divided the Bible into chapters in 1227. Langton was a professor at the University of Paris and became the Archbishop of Canterbury.

The Verses Were Added In The Sixteenth Century by Robert Stephanus (Stephens), a French printer, divided the verses for his Greek New Testament. It was published in 1551.

The first entire Bible in which these chapter and verse divisions were used was Stephen's edition of the Latin Vulgate (1555). The first English New Testament to have both chapter and verse divisions was the Geneva Bible (1560). Fortunately Jewish scholars have followed the way of dividing the Hebrew Scripture into chapters and verses.

Matthew 27:1-66

Early the next morning all the chief priests and the nation’s leaders met and decided that Jesus should be executed.

They tied him up and led him away to Pilate the governor.

Judas had betrayed Jesus, but when he learned that Jesus had been sentenced to death, he was sorry for what his deed. He returned the 30 silver coins to the chief priests and leaders

and said, “I have sinned by betraying a man who has done nothing wrong.”

“So what? That’s your problem,” they replied.

Judas strew the money onto the temple floor and then went out and hanged himself.

The chief priests picked up the money and said, “This money was paid to have a man killed. We can’t put it in the temple treasury.”

Then they had a meeting and decided to buy a field that belonged to someone who made clay pots. They wanted to use it as a graveyard for foreigners.

That’s why people as of this report call that place “Field of Blood.”

So the words of the prophet Jeremiah were fulfilled, “They took 30 silver coins, the price of a person among the people of Israel.

They paid it for a potter’s field as the Lord had commanded me.”

Jesus was brought before Pilate the governor, who asked him, “Are you the Jew's King?”

“Those are your words!” Jesus replied.

And when the chief priests and leaders brought their charges against Him. Jesus remained quiet.

Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear what crimes they say you have done?”

But Jesus did not say anything, and the governor was totally amazed.

During Passover the governor always freed a prisoner chosen by the people.

At that time a well-known terrorist named Jesus Barabbas was in jail.

So when the crowd gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which prisoner do you want me to free? Do you want Jesus Barabbas or Jesus who is called the Messiah?”

Pilate realized that the leaders had brought Jesus to him because they were jealous.

While Pilate was judging the case, his wife sent him a message. It said, “Have nothing to do with that innocent Man. I have had nightmares regarding Him.”

But the chief priests and the leaders convinced the crowds to ask for Barabbas to be freed and for Jesus to be killed.

Pilate asked the crowd again, “Which of these 2 men do you wish me to free?”

“Barabbas!” they replied.

Pilate asked them, “What am I to do with Jesus, who is called the Messiah?”

They all yelled, “Nail him to a cross!”

Pilate answered, “But what crime has He done?”

“Nail him to a cross!” they screamed louder.

Pilate thought that there was nothing he could do and that the people might riot. So he took some water and washed his hands in front of them and said, “I won’t have anything to do with killing this man. You are the ones doing it!”

Everyone answered, “We and our own families will take the blame for his death!”

Pilate set Barabbas free. Then he ordered his soldiers to beat Jesus with a whip and nail him to a cross.

The governor’s soldiers led Jesus into the fort and brought together the rest of the troops.

They stripped off Jesus' clothes and put a scarlet robe about him.

They platted a crown out of thorn branches and shoved it on his head, and they put a stick in his right hand. The soldiers knelt down and pretended to worship him. They made fun of him and shouted, “Hey, you Jew King!”

Then they spit on him. They took the stick from him and beat him about His head with it.

When the soldiers had finished poking fun of Jesus, they took off the robe. They put his own clothes back on him and led him off to be nailed to a cross.

Along way they met a man from Cyrene named Simon, and forced him to carry Jesus' cross.

They came to a place named Golgotha, which means “Place of a Skull.”

There they gave Jesus some vinegar mixed with a drug to ease the pain. But when Jesus tasted what it was, He refused to accept it.

The soldiers nailed Jesus to a cross and gambled to see who would get His clothes.

Then they sat down to guard Him.

Over His head they put a sign that told why he was nailed there. It read, “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.”

The soldiers also nailed two criminals on crosses --- one on either side of Jesus.

People who passed by said terrible things about Jesus. They shook their heads and

shouted, “So You’re the one who claimed You could tear down the temple and build it again in 3 days! If You are God’s Son, save Yourself and come off that cross!”

The chief priests, the leaders, and the teachers of the Law of Moses also mocked Jesus. They said,

“He saved others, but He can’t save himself. If He is Israel's King, He should come down from the cross! Then we will accept Him.

He trusted God, let God save Him, if He wishes. He even said He was God’s Son.”

The two criminals also said rude things to Jesus.

At noon the sky darkened and stayed that way until 3 o’clock.

Then about that time Jesus called out, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, My God, why have You deserted Me?”

Some of the people standing there heard Jesus and said, “He’s calling Elijah.”

One of them ran and grabbed a sponge. He soaked it in vinegar, then stuck it on a stick and held it up to Jesus.

Others said, “Wait! Let’s see if Elijah will come to save him.”

Once again Jesus called out, and then He gave up His Spirit.

At once the curtain in the temple was ripped in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, and rocks split apart.

Graves opened, and many of God’s people were raised to life.

Then after Jesus had risen to life, they came out of their graves and visited the holy city, where they were seen by many people.

The officer and the soldiers guarding Jesus felt the earthquake and observed everything that happened. They were frightened and said, “This man actually was God’s Son!”

Many women had come with Jesus from Galilee to be of assistance to Him, and they were there, looking on from a distance.

Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of James and John were among these women.

That evening a rich disciple named Joseph from the town of Arimathea

went and asked for Jesus' body. Pilate gave orders for it to be handed over to Joseph,

who received the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth.

Then Joseph put the body in his own tomb that had been cut into solid rock and had never been used. He rolled a big stone across the entrance to the tomb and left.

All this time Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting across from the tomb.

The following day, which was a Sabbath, the chief priests and the Pharisees went united to Pilate.

They said, “Sire, we remember what that liar said while he was yet living. He claimed that in 3 days he would come back from the dead.

So please order the tomb to be carefully guarded for 3 days. If you don’t, his disciples may come and take his body. They will inform the people that he has been raised to life, and this last lie will be worse than the first one.”

Pilate answered them, “Okay, take some of your soldiers and guard the tomb as best you can.”

So they sealed it tight and placed soldiers there to watch it.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 And morning having come, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus, so as to put him to death;

2 and having bound him, they did lead away, and delivered him up to Pontius Pilate, the governor.

3 Then Judas -- he who delivered him up -- having seen that he was condemned, having repented, brought back the thirty silverlings to the chief priests, and to the elders, saying,

4 `I did sin, having delivered up innocent blood;' and they said, `What -- to us? thou shalt see!'

5 and having cast down the silverlings in the sanctuary, he departed, and having gone away, he did strangle himself.

6 And the chief priests having taken the silverlings, said, `It is not lawful to put them to the treasury, seeing it is the price of blood;'

7 and having taken counsel, they bought with them the field of the potter, for the burial of strangers;

8 therefore was that field called, `Field of blood,' unto this day.

9 Then was fulfilled that spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying, `And I took the thirty silverlings, the price of him who hath been priced, whom they of the sons of Israel did price,

10 and gave them for the field of the potter, as the Lord did appoint to me.'

11 And Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor did question him, saying, `Art thou the king of the Jews!' And Jesus said to him, `Thou sayest.'

12 And in his being accused by the chief priests and the elders, he did not answer any thing,

13 then saith Pilate to him, `Dost thou not hear how many things they witness against thee?'

14 And he did not answer him, not even to one word, so that the governor did wonder greatly.

15 And at the feast the governor had been accustomed to release one to the multitude, a prisoner, whom they willed,

16 and they had then a noted prisoner, called Barabbas,

17 they therefore having been gathered together, Pilate said to them, `Whom will ye I shall release to you? Barabbas or Jesus who is called Christ?'

18 for he had known that because of envy they had delivered him up.

19 And as he is sitting on the tribunal, his wife sent unto him, saying, `Nothing -- to thee and to that righteous one, for many things did I suffer to-day in a dream because of him.'

20 And the chief priests and the elders did persuade the multitudes that they might ask for themselves Barabbas, and might destroy Jesus;

21 and the governor answering said to them, `Which of the two will ye [that] I shall release to you?' And they said, `Barabbas.'

22 Pilate saith to them, `What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?' They all say to him, `Let be crucified!'

23 And the governor said, `Why, what evil did he?' and they were crying out the more, saying, `Let be crucified.'

24 And Pilate having seen that it profiteth nothing, but rather a tumult is made, having taken water, he did wash the hands before the multitude, saying, `I am innocent from the blood of this righteous one; ye -- ye shall see;'

25 and all the people answering said, `His blood [is] upon us, and upon our children!'

26 Then did he release to them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered [him] up that he may be crucified;

27 then the soldiers of the governor having taken Jesus to the Praetorium, did gather to him all the band;

28 and having unclothed him, they put around him a crimson cloak,

29 and having plaited him a crown out of thorns they put [it] on his head, and a reed in his right hand, and having kneeled before him, they were mocking him, saying, `Hail, the king of the Jews.'

30 And having spit on him, they took the reed, and were smiting on his head;

31 and when they had mocked him, they took off from him the cloak, and put on him his own garments, and led him away to crucify [him].

32 And coming forth, they found a man, a Cyrenian, by name Simon: him they impressed that he might bear his cross;

33 and having come to a place called Golgotha, that is called Place of a Skull,

34 they gave him to drink vinegar mixed with gall, and having tasted, he would not drink.

35 And having crucified him, they divided his garments, casting a lot, that it might be fulfilled that was spoken by the prophet, `They divided my garments to themselves, and over my vesture they cast a lot;'

36 and sitting down, they were watching him there,

37 and they put up over his head, his accusation written, `This is Jesus, the king of the Jews.'

38 Then crucified with him are two robbers, one on the right hand, and one on the left,

39 and those passing by were speaking evil of him, wagging their heads,

40 and saying, `Thou that art throwing down the sanctuary, and in three days building [it], save thyself; if Son thou art of God, come down from the cross.'

41 And in like manner also the chief priests mocking, with the scribes and elders, said,

42 `Others he saved; himself he is not able to save! If he be King of Israel, let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe him;

43 he hath trusted on God, let Him now deliver him, if He wish him, because he said -- Son of God I am;'

44 with the same also the robbers, who were crucified with him, were reproaching him.

45 And from the sixth hour darkness came over all the land unto the ninth hour,

46 and about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a great voice, saying, `Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?' that is, `My God, my God, why didst Thou forsake me?'

47 And certain of those standing there having heard, said -- `Elijah he doth call;'

48 and immediately, one of them having run, and having taken a spunge, having filled [it] with vinegar, and having put [it] on a reed, was giving him to drink,

49 but the rest said, `Let alone, let us see if Elijah doth come -- about to save him.'

50 And Jesus having again cried with a great voice, yielded the spirit;

51 and lo, the vail of the sanctuary was rent in two from top unto bottom, and the earth did quake, and the rocks were rent,

52 and the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who have fallen asleep, arose,

53 and having come forth out of the tombs after his rising, they went into the holy city, and appeared to many.

54 And the centurion, and those with him watching Jesus, having seen the earthquake, and the things that were done, were exceedingly afraid, saying, `Truly this was God's Son.'

55 And there were there many women beholding from afar, who did follow Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him,

56 among whom was Mary the Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and of Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

57 And evening having come, there came a rich man, from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also himself was discipled to Jesus,

58 he having gone near to Pilate, asked for himself the body of Jesus; then Pilate commanded the body to be given back.

59 And having taken the body, Joseph wrapped it in clean linen,

60 and laid it in his new tomb, that he hewed in the rock, and having rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, he went away;

61 and there were there Mary the Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over-against the sepulcher.

62 And on the morrow that is after the preparation, were gathered together the chief priests, and the Pharisees, unto Pilate,

63 saying, `Sir, we have remembered that that deceiver said while yet living, After three days I do rise;

64 command, then, the sepulcher to be made secure till the third day, lest his disciples, having come by night, may steal him away, and may say to the people, He rose from the dead, and the last deceit
shall be worse than the first.'

65 And Pilate said to them, `Ye have a watch, go away, make secure -- as ye have known;'

66 and they, having gone, did make the sepulchre secure, having sealed the stone, together with the watch.

Matthew 28:1-20

Now after the Sabbath, near dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb.

And a great earthquake had occurred, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone, and sat on it.

The angel’s appearance was vibrant, and his clothes were like fresh snow.

The guards shook, paralyzed in total fear of him and became like dead men.

But the angel said to the women, “Don't be scared; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified.

He's not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come! See the place where He was lying.

Go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead. Understand, He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see Him. See, I have told you.”

So the women left the tomb quickly with mixed emotions, and ran to inform the disciples.

And as they went, suddenly, Jesus met them, saying, “Happy Day!” And they went to Him and took hold of His feet and worshiped Him.

Then Jesus said to them, “Do not fear; go and tell My brothers to leave for Galilee, and there they will find Me.”

While they want, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened.

And when the chief priests had gathered with the elders and fabricated a cover-up, they gave a sufficient sum of money to bribe the soldiers,

and said, “You say this, ‘His disciples came at night and stole Him while you slept.’

And if Pilate hears about it, we will sooth him and keep you from harm.”

So they took the bribe and did as they were instructed; and this fabrication was widely spread among the Jews, and to the very day of this report.

Now 11 disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated.

And when they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted that it was really He.

Jesus came up and said to them, “All power of absolute rule in heaven and on earth is given to Me.

Go now and make disciples from every nation, immerse them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you; and understand, I Am remaining with you forever regardless of circumstance, even to the end of the age.”

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 And on the eve of the sabbaths, at the dawn, toward the first of the sabbaths, came Mary the Magdalene, and the other Mary, to see the sepulchre,

2 and lo, there came a great earthquake, for a messenger of the Lord, having come down out of heaven, having come, did roll away the stone from the door, and was sitting upon it,

3 and his countenance was as lightning, and his clothing white as snow,

4 and from the fear of him did the keepers shake, and they became as dead men.

5 And the messenger answering said to the women, `Fear not ye, for I have known that Jesus, who hath been crucified, ye seek;

6 he is not here, for he rose, as he said; come, see the place where the Lord was lying;

7 and having gone quickly, say ye to his disciples, that he rose from the dead; and lo, he doth go before you to Galilee, there ye shall see him; lo, I have told you.'

8 And having gone forth quickly from the tomb, with fear and great joy, they ran to tell to his disciples;

9 and as they were going to tell to his disciples, then lo, Jesus met them, saying, `Hail!' and they having come near, laid hold of his feet, and did bow to him.

10 Then saith Jesus to them, `Fear ye not, go away, tell to my brethren that they may go away to Galilee, and there they shall see me.'

11 And while they are going on, lo, certain of the watch having come to the city, told to the chief priests all the things that happened,

12 and having been gathered together with the elders, counsel also having taken, they gave much money to the soldiers,

13 saying, `Say ye, that his disciples having come by night, stole him -- we being asleep;

14 and if this be heard by the governor, we will persuade him, and you keep free from anxiety.'

15 And they, having received the money, did as they were taught, and this account was spread abroad among Jews till this day.

16 And the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mount where Jesus appointed them,

17 and having seen him, they bowed to him, but some did waver.

18 And having come near, Jesus spake to them, saying, `Given to me was all authority in heaven and on earth;

19 having gone, then, disciple all the nations, (baptizing them -- to the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,

20 teaching them to observe all, whatever I did command you,) and lo, I am with you all the days -- till the full end of the age.'

Mark 1:1-45

This is the good news regarding Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

It started just as God had said in the book written by Isaiah the prophet, “I am sending my messenger to make the way right for you.

In the desert someone is yelling, ‘Get the road ready for the Lord! Make a straight path for him.’”

So John the Baptist appeared in the desert and told everyone, “Return to God and be baptized! So your sins might be forgiven.”

From all Judea and Jerusalem crowds of people visited John. They told how sorry they were for their sins, and he baptized them in the Jordan River.

John wore clothes made of camel’s hair. He had a leather strap around his waist and ate grasshoppers and wild honey.

John also told the people, “Someone more powerful is coming. And I am not good enough even to stoop down and untie his sandals.

I immerse with water, but He will immerse with the Holy Spirit!

Around that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and John immersed him in the Jordan River.

As soon as Jesus came out of the water, John saw the sky open and the Holy Spirit coming down upon Jesus like a dove.

A voice from heaven said, “You are my own dear Son, and I am pleased with you.”

Immediately God’s Spirit made Jesus go into the desert.

He stayed there for 40 days while Satan tested him. Jesus was among wild animals, but angels took care of him.

After John's arrest, Jesus went to Galilee and spread the good news that comes from God.

Jesus said, “The time has arrived! God’s kingdom will soon be here. Turn back to God and accept the good news!”

As Jesus was walking along the shore of Lake Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were fishermen casting their nets into the lake.

Jesus said to them, “Come with me! I will teach you how to bring in people instead of fish.”

Right then the two brothers dropped their nets and went with him.

Jesus walked on and soon saw James and John, the sons of Zebedee. They aboard a boat, mending their nets.

At once Jesus asked them to come with him. They left their father in the boat with the hired workers and went with Jesus.

Jesus and his disciples went to the town of Capernaum. Then on the following Sabbath he went into the Jewish synagogue and taught.

Everyone was amazed at his teaching. He taught with authority, and not like the teachers of the Law of Moses.

Suddenly a man with an evil spirit inside him entered the meeting place and yelled,

“Jesus from Nazareth, what do you want with us? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are! You are God’s Holy One.”

Jesus told the evil spirit, “Be quiet and leave the man!”

The spirit shook him. Then it screamed and left.

Everyone was completely surprised and kept saying to each other, “What is this? It must be some new kind of powerful teaching! Even evil spirits obey him.”

News about Jesus quickly spread throughout Galilee.

As soon as Jesus left the synagogue with James and John, they went home with Simon and Andrew.

When they got there, Jesus was told that Simon’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with fever.

Jesus went to her. He took hold of her hand and helped her up. The fever left her, and she served them a meal.

That evening after sunset, all who were sick or had demons in them were brought to Jesus.

In fact, the whole town gathered around the door of the house.

Jesus healed all kinds of horrible diseases and drove away lots of demons. But the demons knew who he was, and Jesus did not let them speak.

Early the following morning, Jesus got up and went to a place where he could be alone and pray.

Simon and the others began searching for him.

And when they found him, they said, “Everyone is looking for you!”

Jesus replied, “We must go to the nearby towns, so that I can tell the good news to those people. This is why I have come.”

Then Jesus went to synagogues everywhere in Galilee, where he preached and drove away demons.

A man with leprosy came to Jesus and knelt down. He begged, “You have the power to make me well, if You desire.”

Jesus felt sorry for the man. So he put his hand on him and said, “I want to! Now you are well.”

Immediately the man’s leprosy disappeared, and he was healed.

After Jesus strictly warned the man, he sent him on his way.

Jesus said, “Don’t tell anyone about this. Just go and show the priest that you're healsed. Then take a gift to the temple as Moses commanded, and everyone will know that you have been healed.”

The man talked so much and informed so many people, that Jesus could no longer go openly into a town --- He had to stay away, but people still came to him from everywhere.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 A beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, Son of God.

2 As it hath been written in the prophets, `Lo, I send My messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee,' --

3 `A voice of one calling in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, straight make ye his paths,' --

4 John came baptizing in the wilderness, and proclaiming a baptism of reformation -- to remission of sins,

5 and there were going forth to him all the region of Judea, and they of Jerusalem, and they were all baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

6 And John was clothed with camel's hair, and a girdle of skin around his loins, and eating locusts and honey of the field,

7 and he proclaimed, saying, `He doth come -- who is mightier than I -- after me, of whom I am not worthy -- having stooped down -- to loose the latchet of his sandals;

8 I indeed did baptize you with water, but he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit.'

9 And it came to pass in those days, Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John at the Jordan;

10 and immediately coming up from the water, he saw the heavens dividing, and the Spirit as a dove coming down upon him;

11 and a voice came out of the heavens, `Thou art My Son -- the Beloved, in whom I did delight.'

12 And immediately doth the Spirit put him forth to the wilderness,

13 and he was there in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by the Adversary, and he was with the beasts, and the messengers were ministering to him.

14 And after the delivering up of John, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of the reign of God,

15 and saying -- `Fulfilled hath been the time, and the reign of God hath come nigh, reform ye, and believe in the good news.'

16 And, walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon, and Andrew his brother, casting a drag into the sea, for they were fishers,

17 and Jesus said to them, `Come ye after me, and I shall make you to become fishers of men;'

18 and immediately, having left their nets, they followed him.

19 And having gone on thence a little, he saw James of Zebedee, and John his brother, and they were in the boat refitting the nets,

20 and immediately he called them, and, having left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, they went away after him.

21 And they go on to Capernaum, and immediately, on the sabbaths, having gone into the synagogue, he was teaching,

22 and they were astonished at his teaching, for he was teaching them as having authority, and not as the scribes.

23 And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out,

24 saying, `Away! what -- to us and to thee, Jesus the Nazarene? thou didst come to destroy us; I have known thee who thou art -- the Holy One of God.'

25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, `Be silenced, and come forth out of him,'

26 and the unclean spirit having torn him, and having cried with a great voice, came forth out of him,

27 and they were all amazed, so as to reason among themselves, saying, `What is this? what new teaching [is] this? that with authority also the unclean spirits he commandeth, and they obey him!'

28 And the fame of him went forth immediately to all the region, round about, of Galilee.

29 And immediately, having come forth out of the synagogue, they went to the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John,

30 and the mother-in-law of Simon was lying fevered, and immediately they tell him about her,

31 and having come near, he raised her up, having laid hold of her hand, and the fever left her immediately, and she was ministering to them.

32 And evening having come, when the sun did set, they brought unto him all who were ill, and who were demoniacs,

33 and the whole city was gathered together near the door,

34 and he healed many who were ill of manifold diseases, and many demons he cast forth, and was not suffering the demons to speak, because they knew him.

35 And very early, it being yet night, having risen, he went forth, and went away to a desert place, and was there praying;

36 and Simon and those with him went in quest of him,

37 and having found him, they say to him, -- `All do seek thee;'

38 and he saith to them, `We may go to the next towns, that there also I may preach, for for this I came forth.'

39 And he was preaching in their synagogues, in all Galilee, and is casting out the demons,

40 and there doth come to him a leper, calling on him, and kneeling to him, and saying to him -- `If thou mayest will, thou art able to cleanse me.'

41 And Jesus having been moved with compassion, having stretched forth the hand, touched him, and saith to him, `I will; be thou cleansed;'

42 and he having spoken, immediately the leprosy went away from him, and he was cleansed.

43 And having sternly charged him, immediately he put him forth,

44 and saith to him, `See thou mayest say nothing to any one, but go away, thyself shew to the priest, and bring near for thy cleansing the things Moses directed, for a testimony to them.'

45 And he, having gone forth, began to proclaim much, and to spread abroad the thing, so that no more he was able openly to enter into the city, but he was without in desert places, and they were coming unto him from every quarter.

Mark 2:1-28

A few days later, Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he was home.

They gathered in such large crowds that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them.

Some men came, bringing to Jesus a paralyzed man, carried by four of them.

Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made a hole in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on.

When Jesus observed their faith, He told the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”

Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, pondering,

“Why does this guy speak like this? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but ONLY GOD?”

Immediately Jesus perceived in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking this?

What is easier to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Arise, take your mat and walk’?

But I want you to understand that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man,

“I tell you, arise, take your mat and go home.”

He got up, took his mat and walked out in front of everyone. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen the like!”

Once again Jesus went out along the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them.

As he walked along, he saw Alphaeus' son Levi sitting in the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.

While Jesus was dinning at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many following Him.

When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees observed Jesus eating with sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “The healthy don't need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came asking Jesus, “How come John’s disciples and those of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?”

Jesus answered, “How can the friends of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? They can't, so long as He's with them.

But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and on that day they will fast.

“No one sews a patch of unshrinken cloth on a older garment. The new patch will pucker away from the old, making the tear even more apparent.

And no one puts new wine into old wine sacks. Otherwise, the wine will rupture the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be lost. No, they put new wine into new wineskins.”
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath

One Sabbath Jesus was walking through the grain fields, and as his disciples went along, they began to pick some heads of grain.

The Pharisees asked him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”

He answered, “Didn't you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need?

In the time of Abiathar the high priest, David entered the temple of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.”

Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was designed for man, not visa versa.

So the Son of Man is even Lord over the Sabbath.”

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)
1 And again he entered into Capernaum, after [some] days, and it was heard that he is in the house,

2 and immediately many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door, and he was speaking to them the word.

3 And they come unto him, bringing a paralytic, borne by four,

4 and not being able to come near to him because of the multitude, they uncovered the roof where he was, and, having broken [it] up, they let down the couch on which the paralytic was lying,

5 and Jesus having seen their faith, saith to the paralytic, `Child, thy sins have been forgiven thee.'

6 And there were certain of the scribes there sitting, and reasoning in their hearts,

7 `Why doth this one thus speak evil words? who is able to forgive sins except one -- God?'

8 And immediately Jesus, having known in his spirit that they thus reason in themselves, said to them, `Why these things reason ye in your hearts?

9 which is easier, to say to the paralytic, The sins have been forgiven to thee? or to say, Rise, and take up thy couch, and walk?

10 `And, that ye may know that the Son of Man hath authority on the earth to forgive sins -- (he saith to the paralytic) --

11 I say to thee, Rise, and take up thy couch, and go away to thy house;'

12 and he rose immediately, and having taken up the couch, he went forth before all, so that all were astonished, and do glorify God, saying -- `Never thus did we see.'

13 And he went forth again by the sea, and all the multitude was coming unto him, and he was teaching them,

14 and passing by, he saw Levi of Alpheus sitting at the tax-office, and saith to him, `Be following me,' and he, having risen, did follow him.

15 And it came to pass, in his reclining (at meat) in his house, that many tax-gatherers and sinners were reclining (at meat) with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many, and they followed him.

16 And the scribes and the Pharisees, having seen him eating with the tax-gatherers and sinners, said to his disciples, `Why -- that with the tax-gatherers and sinners he doth eat and drink?'

17 And Jesus, having heard, saith to them, `They who are strong have no need of a physician, but they who are ill; I came not to call righteous men, but sinners to reformation.'

18 And the disciples of John and those of the Pharisees were fasting, and they come and say to him, `Wherefore do the disciples of John and those of the Pharisees fast, and thy disciples do not fast?'

19 And Jesus said to them, `Are the sons of the bride-chamber able, while the bridegroom is with them, to fast? so long time as they have the bridegroom with them they are not able to fast;

20 but days shall come when the bridegroom may be taken from them, and then they shall fast -- in those days.

21 `And no one a patch of undressed cloth doth sew on an old garment, and if not -- the new filling it up doth take from the old and the rent doth become worse;

22 and no one doth put new wine into old skins, and if not -- the new wine doth burst the skins, and the wine is poured out, and the skins will be destroyed; but new wine into new skins is to be put.'

23 And it came to pass -- he is going along on the sabbaths through the corn-fields -- and his disciples began to make a way, plucking the ears,

24 and the Pharisees said to him, `Lo, why do they on the sabbaths that which is not lawful?'

25 And he said to them, `Did ye never read what David did, when he had need and was hungry, he and those with him?

26 how he went into the house of God, (at `Abiathar the chief priest,') and the loaves of the presentation did eat, which it is not lawful to eat, except to the priests, and he gave also to those who were
with him?'

27 And he said to them, `The sabbath for man was made, not man for the sabbath,

28 so that the son of man is lord also of the sabbath.'
