by the way, I understand that Ian McKellen is an atheist.
Some in prison say they are "believers" in an attempt to get out of jail sooner and continue down their own merry path. Some see where their own path has gotten them and desire a change of lifestyle. Some truly see themselves at the end of their rope without any hope and cry out to GOD. And some are in prison because they are doing GOD's will and they in fact have done nothing wrong ---- society/government simply wants conformists to their agenda.
I would imagine that most people at least wish to appear as though they are doing the "right" thing ---- even atheists. And it is really rather funny that ancient Roman society once believed that "Christians" were in fact atheists! So just let me shake your hand. It seems we are in this cell together
