It was the Holy priesthood that was without father, mother or beginning of days or end of years. In the early days there was no lesser priesthood, and Joseph Smith taught that all priesthood was part of the Holy priesthood. All the fathers (patriarchs) held this priesthood, from Adam to Shem (Melchizedek), and from Abraham to Moses. Just as we lose track of Shem, Melchizedek appears on the scene. Being the son of Noah, he would have been the rightful heir to the role of high priest.

SHEM was a name; MELCHIZEDEK was a title. According to Hebrew tradition, the two were the same, and I believe this tradition is correct. Jerusalem means "City of Peace." Shem would thus qualify as the last great high priest of his father's dispensation, and Abraham was the first high priest of the Abrahamic dispensation.

Jesus was YHVH, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He was not Melchizedek.
