How did I know I was straight when I was 8-years-old and the neighbor girl and I took every chance we could to get naked together, kiss, and do sexual things? I was never sexually molested or abused in any fashion, but I couldn't wait until we got together and played bf & gf. And that desire for the opposite sex never wavered.

I wasn't exposed to pornography. TV programming wasn't nearly as sexually ubiquitous as it is today. No one groomed me to be a little deviant. I just was.

To say that a Gay kid can't feel attraction toward the same sex at a prepubescent or early pubescent age is to discredit heterosexuality, too. It's complete and utter nonsense.

What I wouldn't do is tell my kid, oh yeah, for sure, you're so gay, let's transform your whole existence to revolve around this idea. Let's write a coming out speech and turn you into a poster child for the gay movement. Let's go march in pride parades. Let's do a whole bunch of stuff and cement your identity. Because victim status is what defines me.

Your pattern of going down a bizarre imaginary slippery slope, extending points well beyond anything realistic is meaningless. It does nothing to advance your argument, and it is irrelevant to the topic at hand. It does reveal more of your stereotypes, however.

I just read most of the thread - rather quickly.

Up to this point, I have decided to call this thread the "Christmas Morning" thread. A space littered with a ton of presents all piled on top of each other. While opening all of these presents, I have had many experiences. Surprise, laughter, confusion and weariness.

Having said that, I believe that the posts in this thread from Jersey Girl are clearly the best of the bunch.

Jersey Girl, a variation on this question of how and when people can know they are gay is how and when people can know they are straight.

I am assuming the process of gaining knowledge of sexual orientation is not dependent on which option is chosen, would that be correct, based on your studies?

Yes, of course.

You do have to consider all the mind numbing variables that go into this knowledge. How has the child been influenced, by what, and in what way? Has the child been manipulated to think they are, for example, transgendered or gay, due to adult questioning? Bullying or harassment by peers?

Keep in mind this isn't about how sexual orientation is determined but how we know what we know about our sexual orientation.

General rule of thumb when a child approaches you with a sensitive topic such as their sexual orientation is this. Be ready to discuss and never lead the child and only once you've caught your breath because we need to recognize how difficult a situation this is for an adult who is emotionally attached to the child.

I'll model a conversation and I wish for all the world I could submit an audio post so folks could hear the calm and matter of fact tones I would use.

Ch: Mom, I think I'm gay.
A: Why do you think that?
Ch: Because I think I like girls better than boys.
A: Well, you could be. Do you have a concern about this that you need to talk about?
Ch: Not right now. I just wanted to tell you that.*
A: We can talk about this any time you want, okay?
Ch: Okay. Thanks, Mom. What are we having for dinner?

*Often children will leave it at their announcement because they know the topic is sensitive and they might feel anxious about what else might be said or feel a sense that they'll be in over their head. When the child opens the door, make sure you leave it open.

When you pose simple and open ended questions over time, and create a hospitable dynamic where a child feels free to express themselves, you will hear indications about what information the child already has about themselves, their conceptual framework, regarding the topic they've raised. It's okay if you want to correct, explain or clarify misconceptions, but do not lead the child far beyond the information they've presented.

The only way you'll know if they know is when you hear it in their articulation of the topic.
