Re: Tidal wave of sexual assault-misconduct allegations list
Well, people are free to say what they want. I fully support their constitutional right to voice their grievances, accusations, or whatever. I fully support women in their right to express themselves. That goes without saying.
I also fully support the need for men AND women to act like professionals in their workplace, and decent human beings in their private lives.
I'm just saying when you're taking people at their word, and the cost is career, family, and reputation then words absolutely can't be taken on their own accord. And I think that's where we're at right now. It's dangerous and irresponsible.
But I've said that like two or three times. I'm fairly certain the participants on this thread have made up their minds regarding the legitimacy of this kind of movement.

Were we were (and stayed for centuries) was very dangerous indeed for women. Men could be as irresponsible as they liked, and there was little risk of a penalty, especially if they chose their victims with a little care.
The present situation is more dangerous than it used to be for men.
I agree that society must do what it can to reduce the risk to the innocent - but in ways that do not amount, in effect, to saying 'Let's just go back to the way things were.'

I mean, let us not pretend it is just women either. Sexual assault goes unreported and unpunished all the time, irregardless of gender or status. Yes, we need to exercise scrutiny in each case and I don't think anyone has suggested anything to the contrary in this thread but the fact that we are at least talking about this as a nation is healthier than if we weren't, in my opinion.
Just a few examples of men that have come forward during this tidal wave:
Terry Crews, Anthony Edwards, this list of lots of people that come out following Spacey's reveal

Chap. Who is disagreeing with what you're posting or stating otherwise? It's like a Pavlovian response with some of you that you have to remind us that women lacked rights or didn't have recourses. Are you suggesting because of historical injustices that, ho hum, a few men here and there will be destroyed, because gosh, women were wronged?
I'm sorry, but people's casual attitude toward innocent people being destroyed because of historical grievances, while completely dismissing human nature and some people's own complicity in their situation is stunning. It's like pulling teeth to get anyone on the Left to admit women, like men, can't be trusted to be honest, have self-interested motivations, or have manipulated others therefore they ought to use the system available to them to address their grievances.
Unless they're willing to do that and to prove their cases through the justice system I'll take their word with a huge grain of salt.

Have I ever given any signs of thinking otherwise? All my responses to you have been written on the basis that we agreed on that point.

I said:
Chap wrote:It seems clear to me that the amount of unreported, unpunished, and relatively serious sexual molestation of woman by men has historically been rather large. Changing this very unjust situation will have costs for men as a gender: mainly, I think, through guilty men getting called out on their behaviour, and other men modifying their behaviour, but also, sadly, through a small number of innocent men getting unjustly accused.
The idea that we have to leave things as they were until we can think of a way of redressing the huge injustice done to women without risk of any deleterious consequences to men is not acceptable. It's time to change, and it's been time to change for a long long time already, without anything much being done about it.
I also said:

Do you think it would be fair to suggest that my posts on this topic display:

Chap,
To be fair I think you've been relatively balanced leaning to the Left. Maybe toeing the party line, but with a tempered approach.
Jersey Girl,
You can add Jack to the list:

To be honest, I find it a little nauseous to read a 'joke' that hinges on the idea that an old woman might finally decide to talk about being abused when she was young.

The list is updated, though it needs to be reorganized and I haven't yet picked up some of your additions because I have to fish them out of links. (Thanks again).
Glenn Thrush was added to the list.
