Re: DCP's ongoing problem with plagiarism
You guys seem to be doing selective reading of my comments. You are all so set on saying that I'm a fool for contradicting you that you aren't reading or trying to seriously understand what it is I am actually saying here.
After I made the "Mormon" F*** You comment, I said the following:
As far as analyzing a quote from the thread, the one that stood out to me was the one that Dan actually acknowledged and apologized for, which says to me that what happened was UN-intentional.
I will try to go back and find that exact excerpt.
After I made the "Mormon" F*** You comment, I said the following:
The thing is, I’m really not interested in continuing this ongoing debate. My real point was that if you really feel that Dan has done this, and are planning to report it, keep in mind that this isn’t just some Internet exercise. This is something that, in the real world, could cost a man who is a professor, likely coming up on retirement, his livelihood.
And, from the comments that have been made here, it is obvious that you all have taken that into serious consideration. At this point, I suppose that the chips will basically fall where they will fall.

So you're chasing around a fly and in your world, I'm the idiot?

I don’t consider that as enabling. As a professor yourself, I think that if you were accused of something that could devastate your career, you would want as much time as possible to prepare some sort of defense.
He already knows what he's doing. He continues to do it. If he hasn't got a defense up his sleeve by now, that's on him. He's not a child who requires stage warnings to a time out consequence. The only point I am trying to make in my response is that you aren’t just playing some kind of game. These are real people and real livelihoods that you are f***ing around with.
If he's plagiarizing, then he's the one ____ around with his own life and livelihood. Not anyone here.Maybe I’m overly sensitive about this because I lost a job due to a layoff and was out of a job for 7 months. I was so depressed I was suicidal. All I’m saying is that when you start accusing people of things in a public forum, it is serious and there are serious consequences that can occur as a result.
I'm going to be blunt as hell here. This is you projecting your own emotional state on to someone who has an innate propensity to save his own ass. Either that or you're appealing to emotion and it doesn't work. He has maligned many a person in writing, and in fact, when he believed his own physical safety was threatened by DE, somehow I was the recipient on a list of recipients of an email circulated wherein he stated that he would contact LE about DE's threats to him including those mentioned on this very board.
Fact: If his ass needs saving, he'll save it himself.I can tell you that I do know what it is like to lose a professorship due to a grant reduction and having to start your career over at 53. It’s not easy. And I just hate to see anyone I care about go through something like that.
That's a false equivalent. You committed no violation whatsoever when you lost that position. He's committing the same violation repeatedly and in spades.
Now, this series of posts you've made is going to end up digging up old bones because God and the angels know that someone around here will be more than willing to do so, and do you need someone to warn you about how that will go?
Consider the heads up issued and does that need to be the price you pay for derailing this topic?
I don't think that my comments could be categorized as derailing. And I do appreciate your advice. In spite of requests for me to deconstruct a plagiarism incident, I'm bowing out.
Please continue the documentation exercise. I'm putting this entire thread on Ignore.
So you're chasing around a fly and in your world, I'm the idiot?

Re: DCP's ongoing problem with plagiarism
It’s my general policy not to carry online disagreements into the in real life world of people I argue with. This is not an exception. Maybe it was not wise of me to commit to that position, but I am not going back on it now. For that reason, I am not researching DCP’s plagiarism, opining on it, or reporting it to others. It would be too easy for someone to argue that I was motivated by a grudge. That said, I am not going to pretend that this is not happening or tell others what they should do about it. I agree that academics should not plagiarize but should write original material.

Lemmie,
You should just put JP on ignore, along with Mental Gymnast.
Two years ago, I started a thread and listed several examples of DCP's plagarism. JP jumped right in and immediately requested examples:
I responded:
JP then responded that she would address the examples of DCP's plagarism.

It's been almost two years and still no response from JP has been forthcoming. It's clear that JP brings nothing to these discussions, except attempts to derail.

Re: DCP's ongoing problem with plagiarism
I have a few questions. Is it ethical to recycle, say, a blog post into an article for an online publication with no mention of its provenance? Also, is it ethical to post pictures used in said articles with no credit to the photographer or owner of the property? And finally, because I don't really know, when you're quoting someone for said article, is it unethical to not source the quoted material?
