Re: DCP's ongoing problem with plagiarism

Post by _Everybody Wang Chung »

JP, what's your opinion?

Is DCP going to self-report his plagiarism as required under the Honor Code DCP signed and agreed to when he became an employee of BYU.

If so when? If not, why?

Also, is DCP going to self-report his plagiarism to the D-News?

If so when? If not, why?

Is DCP going to self-report his plagiarism to Patheos?

If so when? If not, why?

Unlike most here, I feel that the plagiarism that has occurred has been unintentional on Dan’s part. Because of that, I don’t think that he needs to self-report as long as he can go over his prior writings and fix any of the areas where he failed to attribute authors. If, for some reason, he can’t get back into an edit mode of his prior writings and make things right, then I think that he would have an obligation to speak with whomever the writing was published with, explain that he needs to credit authors that were not credited previously, and let the chips fall where they may.

JP,

Are you disputing that per BYU's Academic Honesty Policy that "inadvertent plagiarism" is considered "academic misconduct" and needs to be reported?

The language in BYU's Academic Honesty Policy couldn't be more clear. I'm just curious about your thoughts on BYU's Academic Honesty Policy which DCP signed and agreed to when he became an employee of BYU.

It sounds like you feel it doesn't apply to DCP?

What is the exact policy? If you have reference to it, would you mind quoting it? If it was spelled out earlier, this thread is so long, I would appreciate not having to go back over pages to try to find it. I can’t comment one way or the other until I have read it. Thanks.

JP,

Yes, it has been brought up numerous times. It will literally take you 2 minutes at the most to read:

Here is my comment on IHAQ’s post here. Where did I say anyone here has a responsibility to check Dan’s work? It seems to me that people here have voluntarily taken it upon themselves to check his work.
