...'YOU folks'? That's an interesting way of putting it. You could just tell a poster that their content is rude, insulting, or deliberately nasty, and leave the mormon-related labels out of it.

For example, I might say to you that, although you may not have meant it that way, 'YOU folks' can be taken as a deliberately provocative and insulting statement, typically intended to create a negative division between groups. I don't assume you said it because you belong to a particular Mormon group, however, I am just commenting on the content of your statement.

I didn't say I took offense, I said:

Niadna wrote:There's only one of me posting here. EVERYBODY else is everybody else.

That holds for everyone, right? I think every new person who starts posting in any forum feels that, until they get to know people.
Niadna wrote: "YOU folks" refers to that everybody else who is not me. Just as, if you used 'YOU folks" on the forum to describe all who might see it, I would assume that I was one of those 'folks,' since I'm not you.

Darn, that came out wrong. I don't quite know how else to express it, though. I'm the only one typing on my keyboard. You are all 'out there.' I don't know you. You are ALL 'you folks.'

Thank you for the explanation. My point was that, however you meant it, it is a loaded phrase that has negative meaning to many, and as such it is a tricky phrase to use.
Niadna wrote:I certainly cannot be differentiating between one group and another; I have no clue who is Mormon (of whatever level of belief or doubt) or who is not.

I agree; usually such differentiation into groups is unnecessary when responding to the content of posts.

Niadna,

Here are six onties of silver, and all these will I give thee if thou wilt deny the Explanations of Facsimile No. 3 which Joseph Smith published in the Times & Seasons.

Can you do that?

Will you do that?

Very true Moksha. It is difficult to keep mainstream believers here of any sort due to that. Your reference to MAD is well taken, and in addition to the lopsided moderation over there, we also see the same sort of dog-piling occurring over there when any mildly unorthodox views are offered.

Good point, fence sitter, i should have picked up on the irony a little better re: the MAD reference. Quite a few posters seem to have been kicked out lately, over there! Oh well. Their (shark) loss is our (fresh and vibrant) gain.

Silly Niadna. We can spot trolls miles away. Did you get upset over some crossboard drama? Get a life. Is it too dull or too desperate in Mopologist land?

If you want to look at it that way, I am anti-Mormonism and pro-Mormon. Mormonism is a social disease. Mormons are the victims of it. They need to be treated for their disease to cure them of it. I do my part.

With all due respect, Mak, I think that’s utter nonsense.

This is what I’ve seen on boards inhabited by LDS critics for years. Within days, hours, or sometimes minutes, a member of the self appointed troll police cries “troll!!!!!” The other so-called troll experts dogpile on, subjecting the new person to a barrage of hostile posts. Within a short period of time, the new poster does what any person with a modicum or self respect would do — conclude that the board is inhabited by assholes and go elsewhere. The troll hunter brigade then celebrates their amazing troll spotting skills with joyous back slapping and high fiving. They drive the new person away, and they interpret that as confirmation that the person was a “troll.”

Now, Niadna may turn out to be a troll. But I see no evidence of trolling yet. She does display some behaviors that I think are common for LDS folks when they converse with critics. But that doesn’t make her a troll, unless you define troll as “Mormon”.

It's one way to get known in a hurry, though!

Hop on this thread and bear your testimony why you think you need Jesus. I'm dying to know! Or rather, Jesus died to know.

You don't need Jesus

Now why on earth would I want to do that? I'm not knocking on doors and passing out 'The Plan of Salvation" pamphlets here.

Hey Res Ipsa,

The thing is, she started a thread in which she outlined how she categorizes people based on definitions she makes up and admits to doing this because it helps her.

Niadna wrote:So, I developed this 'taxonomy,' (and as a teacher, I really should have figured out that this is what I was doing) for myself, to differentiate between the types of criticism/attacks I deal with.

No problem there, that is her prerogative. Of course this is a discussion board so people are going to respond. So when some people respond, like Mak and Porter have, by classifying her as a troll, they are just doing that to help themselves figure out how to deal with her attack and criticism.

What's good for the goose....

Probably not. I don't know enough to give the sort of completely informed and scholarly reply that would be required. Thank you, though, for giving me something new to research. ;)
