I'm not sure racism has increased since Obama became president, but I wonder if electing a black president caused more of it to become more visible. Certainly the election of Trump has caused more of it to become visible through his promotion of it. This is why he has cult like support from people like Ajax. Trump showed is true racism when he hung onto ideas I suspect he still supports like Obama not being born in the US.

Why is everyone so fixated on getting women behind a desk? That's sexist.

Chap wrote:I agree that women should also train for trade jobs. Actually trade jobs as independent workers are great for women who may at some times in their lives not want to work an eight-hour day. If my daughter was not interested in academic studies I'd urge her to qualify as an electrician or a plumber. The great point here is that there are lots of women who would actually prefer to have a woman come to do jobs in their home.

On combat infantry: OK, if they have the physical capacity to run or at least trot with an average weight wounded infantry person over their shoulders, and all the rest of it, why not? But as you know, there are many vital military roles that don't demand large muscle power, and that need filling.

Because I want to get women out from behind that desk and into industries where they're massively underrepresented?

I'm outraged how the trucking industry is a tool of the patriarchy, and want to see positive changes happen. I'm flummoxed that people constantly bring up CEOs as some sort of gold standard of attainable equality, when they ignore the inequity in blue collar jobs.

I think you are right there. For most women, the ability to access skilled blue collar jobs currently dominated by men is crucial to getting financial independence. There's nothing intentionally malign about the fact that we hear a lot of talk about executive positions - it is just that the women with the most power to get their voices in the media tend to be people in or aspiring to such positions, and (surprise!) they tend to talk about what they know. Doesn't everybody?

One problem is of course that machinery and vehicles have to be designed so that they don't unnecessarily assume average male size and strength, thereby tacitly excluding women. The invention of power steering was already a big step forward, but there is more to come. Nowadays, machinery (even fighter aircraft controls) is much less often exclusively designed for the average European ancestry male than it used to be - otherwise many men from other ethnicities would have been excluded. Your average Korean F-35A pilot has a different arm-length to his American comrade, and his plane is set up accordingly (or so my informants aver).
