In FY 2015, 69,920 refugees were admitted to the U.S. The main countries of origin were Burma (26.3 percent), Iraq (18.1 percent), Somalia (12.7 percent), the Democratic Republic of Congo (11.3 percent) and Bhutan (8.3 percent).

Of the admitted refugees, 35.7 percent were under 16 years of age, 10 percent were between 16 and 20 years of age and 54.3 percent were over 21.

Countries from which there was a significant increase in refugees from 2014 to 2015 are the Democratic Republic of Congo (7,876 refugees), Syria (1,682 refugees), Burundi (1,186 refugees) and the Ukraine (1,451 refugees). Cuban refugees decreased by 62.4 percent from the previous year.

In 2017, approximately 11.1 million unauthorized immigrants were estimated to be residing in the U.S. The top countries of origin for unauthorized immigrants are Mexico (56%), Guatemala (7%), El Salvador (4%), Honduras (3%) and China (2%). Of the estimated 11.1 million unauthorized immigrants, 7.1% have been granted deferred status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program.

That means 788,000 Hispanics were granted deferred status, plus a few Chinese.

Ms. Ocasio-Cortez may want to clarify that these are not true asylum seekers. They were given asylum in Mexico, where they would be safe. They were also given free education, work permits, free healthcare etc. Americans don't even have all of that. They rejected the asylum offers in Mexico. These are economic migrants 100%. They rejected plenty of safe countries along the way. No one should feel sorry for these people. They are invaders who are no looking for asylum. They want benefits.

If they wanted to sneak in the country they could have taken a much shorter route through rivers and soft spots along the border, but they decided to trek to the farthest possible point to a well known port of entry to apply for asylum. We are the ones breaking the law by tear gassing the crap out of them for no damned reason other than to gin up support for America's tyrant in chief.

So, this is the most ignorant "because" ever written about why the caravan headed to Tijuana..."because" Juarez is not well-known...."because" Chihuahua is not well-known..."because" El Paso is not well-known...."because" MAPS is not well-known....yar, we get your point, Texas is not "well-known" to people south of the Rio Grande and hundreds of extra miles when "fleeing" makes better sense.

To be fair, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is basically mediocre - and not in a bad way. Her income, status, and public speaking are basic...she is just about what our Founding Father envisioned for the Lower House. Reps are supposed to be regular, normal, typical, average, citizens that are essentially un-insulated from the citizenry (an arguable requisite for the Upper House / Senate). So, while she is the Sarah Palin of the Democrats there is no real harm in her "media darling" status except as it exposes the partisan opinion in modern media coverage. Nevertheless, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez serves the Democrats well as a much needed distraction from the other more relevant problems the Democrats are currently challenged to resolve in private.
