Pretty interesting site to say the least, I will enter my own nominee based on the last year or so...

We were restoring a project in downtown LA, it is a 8 story mid rise that was built right after WW1. We were being hit for about a month by wire and copper pipe thieves stealing anything that was not locked up, either in the walls of not.

We arrived on a Monday morning and a worker found a dead body in the basement. We obviously called 911 and did a quick search of personnel to make sure it was not a worker.

It turns out it was a thief who broke in through a old school fire escape window around the 3 floor, we assume at night, and using his cell phone as a flash light he found a small access panel on a wall in close proximity of where he entered, thinking it was a attic where he could find wire.

To his bane, it was a cleaning opening for a make up air shaft that goes from the basement to the roof, he fell around 40-50 feet or so to his death on the concrete basement floor.

It is sad, but what is really sad is that the detective believed he was homeless, and it was never mentioned in the papers nor did we ever hear a thing after they took the body. I have searched countless times on google and can't find anything. I was sure we were going to get sued or at least have reporters come out and ask questions, but nothing. I looked at his body closely but the lighting was bad and the shaft was very dirty has was he, and it was as if he was a "nothing" ( I don't know how to explain my feelings about that). His cell pone was next to him a few feet away, which is why I think he may have been using it was a flash light. My guess is he had no family and reliable ID and was a John Doe.
