Yes. But I see a significant difference between appropriating symbolism for a solemn ritual and appropriating it for entertainment.

I was Order of the Arrow. Isn't cultural appropriation by a conquering people the problem itself? In this case mock 'indian' rituals combined with borrowed masonic rituals combined with mild hazing is honoring Native Americans and First Nations how?

I don't know, despite all the fond memories I have of my time in the OA I look back at some of the pageantry of it and have to cringe. I'll agree that I see a difference between what we did and say, a tomahawk chop but I think that is mostly in degree, not kind.

I had a co-worker who talked about working at camp in her late teens that still had mock “Indian ceremonies” that combined fraternal organization rituals with borrowed and mish-mashed ideas about indigenous cultures. That was the main theme of the camp, in fact.

She told us stories about it for the skin-crawling awkwardness factor like someone telling embarrassing stories about their time in a sex cult. It’s something you’d like to imagine died in the mid 20th century, but are occasionally reminded still goes on.

And yet, after only my first two posts, you spent over two weeks and 30 posts on this thread to show how willing you are, in every aspect of your message board life, to take the bait!!!

Gotta a whole tackle box full of hooks KG. Just don’t need to bait em w you in the pond!!!!
