I see you skipped right over that 538 article showing that philosophy majors tend to do well for themselves. It relied on national statistics and not "vague anecdotes." Maybe fact check your culture war memes before posting them?

If this is baffling to you, then you probably are unaware that businesses hire people with all sorts of degrees. Love it or hate it, philosophy degrees tend to signal strong critical thinking skills. Philosophy undergrads also tend to do well on graduate entrance exams and are generally viewed as a desirable major for a variety of graduate programs.

But since academic philosophy is a useless field of study because a student could get the same education through diligent use of the internet, isn't the same true of electricians learning via youtube videos? Or is formal learning only lame when it's learning about subjects you consider hoity-toity and/or impractical?

And what does this have to do with CPAC's celebration of what they think of as manliness? Do you think it is more manly to be an electrician compared to a philosopher?

My former roommate and friend with the liberal arts degree was one of the most "manly man" I've known to the point of self-parody. And while those stereotypes are silly in any case, it wasn't all positive. He was a total player, which I don't regard as a good thing. He was a very good amateur boxer. He trained with Eric Morel when he was coming up. He could've boxed competitively, but wisely choose to avoid the brain damage. As a hobby, he would occasionally enter amateur competitions and beat the tar out of people. He never failed to beat someone into a new dimension. The notion that he was some kind of "soy-boy" because he choose a major in liberal arts is hilarious to me. It speaks to the kind of insecure anti-intellectualism those type of memes originate from.

Once trade schools become super-expensive, then we can go back to pining away for inexpensive philosophers that can think up a way to make obtaining a 4-year or trade degree somewhat less expensive.
