But the guy who did this in his late 30’s, to an audience of millions, is getting his panties in a wad over the gay fellow who pointed it out, because said gay fellow made some blog posts when he was 22, about trannies and ’Japs’.
These discussions seems to devolve into "Well he did it first!" With respect to Carlson's response, he seems to defend his past positions not because they were intellectually valid, but because they resonated viscerally with his audience. It was the way he made his living and got famous. It was a career stepping stone. Now he is a star.
In some ways, he is like Trump in the sense that he wants his life viewed in the transactional now, and not as a compendium of events. Therefore he is right and always was right. None of things he said were wrong because they felt viscerally right at the time.
And, like Trump, such an attitude means you will never learn from your mistakes, because if they based upon feeling that made your actions feel viscerally correct, they were the right actions at the time. Such an attitude inhibits the personal growth, perspective and wisdom.
