Re: Impeachment hearings
Unless the symbiotic relationship between stupid people and politicians who treat people as if they are stupid is broken, none of this matters. The interdependence between idiots and idiot leaders is too strong to be overcome by facts.
It's amazing to watch the GOP treat their base as though they are complete morons, but it completely makes sense that they do, given how stupid the base has to be to trust the GOP.

Trump went on TV and confessed to a bunch of things he shouldn’t be confessing to again...

He also again implied he fired Comey to prevent the FBI investigation.
Republican operatives: Trump fired Comey due to his violation of DoJ policy in reporting on and scolding Hillary Clinton for actions she was not indicted for. We are so very concerned about FBI mistreatment of Hillary Clinton that this could not stand.
Trump: Nah. It was to obstruct justice.
Republicans: ... ... Well, then. Go “F” yourselves America. Thugz4life.

Counterpoint: There are lots of not stupid people supporting Trump here. I don’t see how you say otherwise without engaging in no true Scotsman fallacy.
Republican leaders just believe that extremism in pursuit of Republican power is no vice. Some of their followers understand this and just personally agree. While they’d like the least unseemly excuse to work, they’re in whatever it takes mode.
Lots of supporters aren’t dumb so much as lack the hueristics to properly understand what’s going on in part because of trusting bad sources of information.
I think we have seen enough to know the main arguments in favor of a quick, limited impeachment have crashed and burned. The idea was the Ukraine affair was simple, easy to follow, had very clear evidence, and concerned a underlying topic where there was previous bipartisan agreement. This in theory would maximize independent and Republican cross over support for impeachment. This was supposed to elevate the chance Republicans break and remove Trump and, if not that, the chance he loses in 2020.
That hasn’t happened. If anything, Trump’s slightly better off than he was before the hearings. His approvals did not budge. More than that, polling is reasonably clear that people are having a hard time following what happened. What moved the polls was the initial flurry of the scandal.
I think that leaves the functions of impeachment down to:
1) Doing what is morally right / civic responsibility
2) Making it harder for almost certain ongoing corruption, including soliciting foreign interference in our elections, to do in the shadows
3) Recording in as much detail as possible what happened so people in the future might learn.
4) Continuing to impress upon the public the miasma of malfeasance surrounding Trump and his accomplices.

There's no doubt about this, EA. I would hope by now that you recognize when I'm speaking hyperbolic generalities.
Certainly there are smart people supporting Trump. What does that say about them? Denial? Rationalization? Something. I think your ideas have merit.
But my comments are really more about what GOP leaders appear to think of their base's intelligence, not what I think of them.

Did you know Zhen Xian Bao is an ancient Chinese art of folding paper?
edit: I’ll remind people that subgenius doesn’t really read more than a sentence or two while skimming the forum. If you type out more than a few sentences it’s overwhelming for him, and I’m sure a little frustrating, much along the lines of a young boy with being tasked to give a book report on a chapter found in Anna Karenina when he’d much rather fold the back page of a MAD magazine together to reveal a hidden picture.

Re: Impeachment hearings
Republicans are willingly being part of the Putin directed Russian disinformation campaign to claim Ukraine was behind US election meddling. They are being complicit in this Russian disinformation campaign in order to help defend the crimes of Trump, Pence, and White House crime syndicate.
US Senators have all been warned about this plot in classified briefings.
Being a Russian stooge is the only way to defend the Kremlin Candidate.
