I see that my zip has about a 0.04 infection rate with a 0.0006 fatality rate. So forgive me if I do not panic and cancel Thanksgiving but rather opt for the conference in Hawaii.

Which is 1.6 times the infection rate and more than 4.4 times the fatality rate in my own county in California. It may not be justification for panic, but your community is definitely doing worse than mine, and probably worse than average. It certainly is more than adequate justification for following the guidelines for slowing the spread of the disease.
