RI,
Don’t despair. The White House and its directors are on the same page:
We would want to ensure that we work to make it affordable, but we can't control that price, because we need the private sector to invest.. Price controls won't get us there. - Alex Azar, 11 hours ago
It’ll be affordable. - White House officials, 1 hour ago
Pence is in charge of coronavirus task force. - Pence, 7 hours ago
I’m leading it, not Pence. - Alex Azar, 1 hour ago
:/
Also:
The virus isn’t that big of a deal. - Alex Azar, 6 hours ago
Anyway. You were probably right. I’m sure the virus isn’t anything to panic over. I think. I mean, I’m not sure. The WHO comes across as nonplussed.

It's mainly older folks, folks with respiratory problems, and the immunocompromised population. But still...this is a new version of coronavirus so who really knows?

Folks if you feel you need it...go on your state's department of health website and search for bleach-water solutions to spray in your home environment. Be careful about the concentrations of your bleach-- sodium hypochlorite ---read the label and compare to your health department charts, before you go about mixing anything up willy nilly. It matters.
Probably the most affordable thing you can do besides hand washing hygiene, self awareness and keeping in tune with what's going on around you in public. What are you touching? How many people may have touched it before you?

If what this whistleblower says is accurate, this is a total debacle. It likely has spread coronavirus throughout the country. Without saying so, it looks like the CDC has given up on containment. We aren’t testing or quarantining travelers from Korea, Italy or Iran.
This blunder probably does show that Trump’s reduction of our pandemic preparedness has hurt us. Why is it that every time I manage to muster up little optimism that this administration will do something right, Trump manages to crush it and grind it under his heel?
You can label the day that happened day one of the US outbreak. I wonder if this is what upset the Congresscritters when they were briefed?
The first known community transmission in the US matches up with where these people would be, so it’s possible.
Maybe the increasing pandemic crashes our shores no matter what, but if this report is true the incompetence is so stunning it’s surreal. I can shake the unreality of it even though it would be on brand for this admin.

I'm a little worried. While the death risk for my age group (30s) is low, I'll be 3rd trimester on 3-7-20. I developed hypertension in the final month of my first two pregnancies, so it will probably happen again. I've never had gestational diabetes, but am at greater risk for it now. Glucose tolerance test is tomorrow.
Both hypertension and diabetes seem to increase the death risk exponentially.
And Chicago is a major transportation hub, so it won't take long for it to start spreading if it makes its way here.
I am just reading the reports, practicing good hand hygiene, and waiting.
In 1918, the great flu pandemic killed between 20 and 100 million people. Now the mortality rate of this flu seems to be MUCH lower than the 1918 flu. There are a lot of things you can do to minimize your exposure, and even with your pregnancy and hypertension I would bet that your prognosis would be very good, as long as you were proactive early on.
In 1918, my grandmother was pregnant with my father, living north of you in Evanston, and my grandfather was fighting in France the Great War (before we knew enough to number them). I've often thought about my grandmother, and what an incredibly stressful time that must have been.
I sympathize with the additional worry that pregnancy and hypertension would bring to your situation. But just know that even in a pandemic most people don't get the flu, and if this turns into a pandemic, with early detection your chances of recovery are excellent.

No, we're kinda screwed. Especially those who may be undergoing certain treatments if you get my drift. I don't know if that applies close to home for you or not...but take good care, okay?
It exactly applies to me, most unfortunately... we are more or less holed up....

Sorry. Sorry. Sorry.

The CDC has said that healthy people wearing masks doesn't help, but I'd like to have at least a box on hand for if anyone in my household gets sick.
Home improvement or paint stores might have them.
I prospect in the desert fairly often, and wear one whenever using my drywasher. I buy them at Home Depot.

Re: The coronavirus spread updated in real time
The WHO estimated Case Fatality Rate for the Spanish Flu Epidemic is 2-3%. https://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/han ... 80_eng.pdf
The Current CFR for Covid 19 was north of 3% last time I checked. (Worldometers is tough to access today.) Remember, though— that number assumes that none of the current cases will result in death. If you look only at the number of resolve cases (recoveries plus deaths), deaths represent about 7% to date.
The rate of spread of Covid 19 (R0) is currently greater than that the rate estimated for Spanish flu.
There are good reasons to expect that the final CFR will be closer to 3 than 7. But that assumes that the Chinese government either missed or is failing to report lots of non-fatal cases. The WHO released the report of its investigation team today. I’ll post a link. It shows a massive effort to seek out and test people with symptoms of the disease. The extent of efforts to locate and test people with symptoms leads me to question the assumption that large numbers of infected people have been missed in China. All of which is to say treat this as being as serious as the Spanish flu because that’s what the current data is showing.
Ms. Jack, the good news in The WHO Report is that the investigators found no elevated risk associated with pregnancy itself. You’re right that diabetes and hypertension are associated with elevated risk, but I’m not sure those reported numbers are age adjusted. You might want to ask your OB to review the recent literature and discuss precautions.
