Yeah, there was already lots of circumstantial evidence of this, but it's pretty hard to get around that Trump sought to impede US testing efforts. When you combine that with information indicating that US testing delays cost thousands of lives and you've got an ugly truth here. The crazy thing is this seems to be motivated by a belief that revealing the extent of the outbreak would be bad politically when failure to do so has worse political consequences. Instead of malice tempered by incompetence, it's malice exacerbated by incompetence.

He doesn't want to test because he knows the case numbers will grow because he knows his administration hasn't been doing everything they could have done to prevent the spread.

It's pretty straightforward what's going on here. Only an idiot would believe the current crap they're selling on testing.

I seriously don't understand why Trump supporters aren't insulted by the things Trump says. It's a parade of slights against their intelligence. Only an asshole would expect people to believe his nonsense.

Testing itself is a preventative measure. It's hard to express just how shortsighted trying to prevent the flow of information is. This is Soviet level bungling.

Today, Trump explicitly said he was not joking when he spoke of reducing testing so there are fewer cases. It’s one of many examples of Trump directly undercutting the apologetic his defenders invented for him shortly before.

Around the same time it’s been announced that the Federal government is pulling financial support for Covid testing in several states, including Texas.

The US has been giving off some strong late stage Soviet Union vibes lately.

A query: Trump has said he will sign an executive order to punish people who destroy or deface monuments. He talks about ten-year sentences.

I am astonished at the implication that the President has the power to simply sign a paper that creates a crime that could lead to a lengthy prison sentence for an American citizen. No English monarch has had the power to do that to their subjects for many centuries. Can Trump actually create a law with criminal sanctions 'just like that'?

Please enlighten me.

(This is quite apart from the fact there there already exists a perfectly valid law against defacing Federal property.)

The order is just an assertion that the prexisting law will be enforced. It’s a symbolic gesture. It’s not even clear how many confederate monuments it would affect since confederate statues aren’t normally on federal property and a subset of them don’t involve US military figures the law concerns. They’re the guys who engaged in an insurrection against the US. You can pretend to protect Robert E. Lee for his service prior to being a traitor, but that defense doesn’t hold up so well for all the statues in question.

So it is an order to promise to do what the government is already authorized to do that will affect few if any vigilante attempts to remove confederate statues.

In short, it’s largely meaningless aside from the symbolism.

This is pretty much the story of his administration, except for all the real world ramifications (i. e. people taking him seriously).

Here is Trump's answer when asked what his priorities for a second term would be:

Before the New York Times edits this down into, "President highlights his experience in making case for second term while visiting familiar topics..." I'd like to point out the President's brain is coagulated soup skin.

Trump's criticism of Bolton is wanting to drop bombs on everyone. You don't have to kill people, apparently.

Instead, you can passively let people die through incompetence. That's more Trump's style, although he is trying to screw the ACA still, so if he can actively kill people, he will.
