Fascism - a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, Commerce, Etc And emphasizing and aggressive nationalism and often racism.
Sorry! But that definition sounds like the new PROGRESSIVE movement!
I know it does to you. And I can see why. The extremes of the Left are illiberal, and I do think that is dangerous. That said, as soon as the GOP literally pledged complete fealty to Donald Trump, it was effectively dead as a political party such as we have known in the past. It is an authoritarian movement. That is why Trump and today’s GOP are a very immediate threat to the future of the republic.
On the other hand, you just don’t have that kind of threat of authoritarian leadership from the Left, nor do I think there will be. The problem is that every liberal with resources loves having resources even more than they love being liberal. You can’t have a Russian or Chinese revolution when being liberal amounts to paying some more taxes and consistently using “they” pronouns in creative ways. So, I don’t see either a fascist or communist government coming from today’s Left. If anything the illiberality of today’s Left almost guarantees that there will not be such a thing.
What we will have with the Democrats is a technocratic corporate plutocracy. It will seek to engineer our lives according to its “wisdom.” It will not be fascist or communist, but it won’t be truly democratic either. The Democratic Party is not democratic. It plays democratic until moneyed interests are discomfited by all of the empty promises threatening to become a reality.
"I have learned with what evils tyranny infects a state. For it frustrates all the virtues, robs freedom of its lofty mood, and opens a school of fawning and terror, inasmuch as it leaves matters not to the wisdom of the laws, but to the angry whim of those who are in authority.”
