Whoopi makes a mess

just to not please anyone I am going to add a thought which Whoopi may or may not have considered.

I think the hatred and fear of Jews comes from a deeper and more dangerous place than racism. It is true that Nazi constructed a theory combining that ancient hatred to a racial theory. That simplified the attack. No need for a Spanish Inquisition to determine if someone was pretending not to be Jewish. But it would not be just simplification, the combination was much more flammable.

Hopefully anybody reading this unpleasant observation does not think I am making light of racism.

Just to add confusion to the mix. The Anti-Defamation League has used a definition of racism that is consistent with what Goldberg said. It originally defined racism as:

"Racism is the belief that a particular race is superior or inferior to another, that a person’s social and moral traits are predetermined by his or her inborn biological characteristics.

In 2020, it changed the definition to:

"The marginalization and/or oppression of people of color based on a socially constructed racial hierarchy that privileges white people."

Under that definition, the holocaust would not be racism unless one defined Jews as "people of color." My point is, it's not just that Whoopi is uneducated or a black woman in America. How to define racism has been a hot topic, and became a significant issue in the U.S, during the summer of 2020.

The ADL changed the definition again, and it now reads:

Racism (interim definition): Racism occurs when individuals or institutions show more favorable evaluation or treatment of an individual or group based on race or ethnicity

But even that is marked as an "interim definition." Even the ADL, who one would think is run by educated, well informed people, struggles with how to define racism.

The summer of 2020 resulted in a firestorm of books and articles about racism, with how to define it being a huge topic. To suggest that Whoopi's statement simply reflects ignorance or experience as a black woman means that somehow she missed all that. Regardless of her education, I'd suggest she's better informed than that.

Ilya Shapiro is still getting paid leave and will be back on the job soon enough. Goldberg is done and likely for good.

In a constitutional America I would agree with classical liberals that Whoopi has the right of free speech on this. She clearly feels very strongly about this as demonstrated by how poorly her first apology on Stephen Colbert went. But we don't live in a constitutional America where freedom of speech is respected. If every time a talk show host, law professor, retired athlete, says something right of center they deserve to be canceled, fired from their job, kicked off Twitter, youtube, Facebook, If that's the standard set by cancel culture then it needs to be applied equally to both sides of the political aisle. There needs to be a mutually assured destruction given this is how the left wants to play the game and these are the rules for the conversation on race we're having.

Ibram X. Kenadi's views and critical race theory is rooted in the idea that any disparity in outcome that we see between people of different levels of skin pigmentation must and can only be attributed to racial prejudice of the surrounding population. And in fact it doesn't matter whether you descend from recent Balkan immigrants, Jewish refugees from Germany or confederate soldiers like myself. You're all white and you're all privileged because of it. That's part of what Whoopi is regurgiating. There is no room to account for personal or even ancestral choices in this. Nor does it matter that LeBron James has more money than the entire state of Mississippi. Nor does it matter that Barack Obama attended an Ivy League school and became President of the United States. It doesn't matter that Barack Obama's black ancestors were not slaves and probably sold the black people brought to America on slave ships to the other side of his family which are completely white. He's the oppressed and you're the oppressor based on nothing more than present pigmentation level in your skin. Poverty can't possibly have anything to do with choosing to have babies before you're married or have completed your education. It can't possibly have anything to do with the amount of work you were willing to do from a young age. It can't have anything to do with what kind of decisions your recent ancestors made. It can only be because 7 generations ago, a fraction of your ancestors or even just people that happened to have a similar skin tone were brought here on a slave ship. That's critical race theory and it's evil, insane, and it's a mess.

I think part of what Whoopi and other critical race theorists believe is that Hitler wasn't actually racist but everyone else is.
