Not only that but building seventeen new temples throughout the world so that many more can receive ordinances of exaltation and also perform work for the dead.
Smith incorporated Masonic like rituals into his brand of oath making in order to make his adherents swear their allegiance. The temples rites will become more and more known and manifest on the Internet as time goes on. There is nothing secret that shall not be made known and proclaimed on the housetops. People have a right to see what goes on in the temple and all of the rites and oaths both past and present need to be published and displayed as a matter of public record. I predict that more videos will be produced and government entities around the world will require the Church to reveal beforehand exactly what oaths and rituals they are foisting on unsuspecting candidates. Of course, some of those have been changed and removed, but even so, people have a right to know what they purchasing before they buy it.
The Mormon temple rituals must be made known and published in every language and everyone must know what they are getting into before they take upon them cultish rituals that have life long implications. I broke my covenants and am proud of it. I've since renounced those oaths and pitched them back to the altars of the temple. Those oaths I made were horrible and disgraceful. The Mormon temple is a house of horror and oaths made therein are harmful to the human race.
Thank you, New Name Noah, for your service.
I can't believe there aren't more members who question the endowment ceremony and all the cultish, ritualistic nonsense that goes on there, especially dawning the silly clothing and worse, the Pillsbury Doughboy bakers hat for the men. And it blows my mind more that my parents and in-laws never gave it a second thought to pantomime slitting your own throat and disemboweling yourself prior to 1991 as penalties for violating any of the oaths. And special tokens and secret handshakes to pass guardian angels to enter God's presence??? Really??? My wife and I have hardly had a desire to go back and participate in this 'wonderful temple experience' since being married, gee, wonder why?
What is the purpose of all the temples when names are being recycled due to lack of new genealogical records?
It seems to be the sole purpose of all these new temples is to convince members that the church isn’t suffering a decline.
Which also explains why there is a rush to announce then but no rush to actually build them.
The purpose of the new temples is $$$$.
Leadership has realized that more temples means more tithe payers.
Even the prospect of a accessible temple in the near future will drive up church revenues.
Smith would be so proud of how the scam he started has evolved into a great money making business.
You and drumdude are, of course, free to express your beliefs in regards to the purposes of temples in this dispensation. The Lord, however, has other purposes in mind. Go back and open up your scriptures.

Maybe because you didn’t get it. And at this point you probably won’t.
Nelson announces a temple in Montpelier, Idaho?!? It has a population of 2,518 (2019), and the work is progressing so fast there it needs a temple???
They do appear to be predominately LDS there though, and it looks like there are 4 wards.
Still, that's a temple in a place with 4 wards, and an existing temple less than an hour away. Some states don't have any temple at all yet. Montpelier is truly blessed, and obeying the law of tithing.
It’s become rather obvious to me that faith and testimony in the restoration are preferable to secular humanist belief.
It's not a matter of what you prefer.
It's a matter of whether the truth claims of the CoJCoLDS are, well, true or false.
Things are true or false regardless of what you 'prefer'.

You may not have read what I asked you to read?
The church likes to do things right. Wat does that mean, you say?
Go back and read. Five minutes of your time.
What you may think “seems” to be the reason for temples is your opinion, which you are entitled to.
The Lord has other purposes.

I'll be around for a few more decades to enjoy the fallout of all these temple announcements. It will take some time to show you how my point pans out. I'm sad that certain others, like DCP, won't be around to see so many of these McTemples get cancelled.

I think Temple announcements serve a number of purposes. They do them at the end of Conference so that members remember them and forget about some of the other less palatable or tedious things that went on at Conference. It’s to create a “high” at the end so that people think Conference was good.
They give members (and the IRS) false comfort that their donations are being put to good charitable use - building temples.
They’re fake PR about the church growing.
They’re an illusion. Smoke and mirrors. They create busy work for members, when in reality they are meaningless ostentatious edifices. If the purpose was to create the opportunity for temple work to be done for living and deceased members then there are much less costly and more effective ways of delivering that result.
Fundamentally they are just a marketing expenditure. Oz’s curtain. The locations of this latest batch of announced temples is bizarre, as has been already pointed out. They’ve got nowhere important left to build them.
It’ll be interesting to watch how many materialise any time soon.
After a good few years observing discussions between Mormon believers and critics on von this and other boards, I think that is a vital tactic for preserving your testimony. It's a delicate thing, after all.
However, ignoring substantive statements of facts that you find inconvenient does rather obviously diminish the value of your arguments, even if it makes you feel (sort of) OK.
Ha. No it’s a vital tactic to preserve my time. Time spent talking about nothing is time wasted. My experience with this poster has shown me that there is such a thing as thoroughly wasting one’s time. Personally I would like to allocate my time to being a bit more productive.
I think this is a great plan! Mentalgymnast has spent an inordinate amount of time recently speculating inappropriately about people's lives off the board, whatever he can do to nip that weirdness in the bud and stick to responding to facts presented is worth it, in my opinion.
