Well, I live in the Eugene area now but grew up and lived most my life exactly where your directions indicate, and I've never heard of you so...huckelberry wrote: ↑Sun Apr 17, 2022 5:14 amMaybe there is no point of posting this but I feel like it is a puzzle worth some sort of reflection.
I live in a valley whose elevation is below one thousand feet. We are located about a hundred miles north of the 45 parallel so not so terrible far north.
Longitude?

My wife and I checked out Walla Walla last summer, so we'd have been relatively close by your house, I suppose. We had a great time (my wife loves wine, especially from Washington, so it was the place for her).huckelberry wrote: ↑Wed Apr 20, 2022 10:20 pmI do not need to be too secretive. Talking about the strange weather... holy crap, it was hot when we went there. I mean, worse than Atlanta hot, and I remember thinking the same thing about climate change, given were were in the northwest part of the country. I expected a cooler summer in Washington.

Some Schmo, last summer we had several extra hot spells but climate maps show us hooking up with the desert to our south in the summer normally. There is a sharp climate divide in Washington state. West of the crest of the Cascade mountains much wetter and cooler. East is rainshadow with areas near desert. We really are not that far off from desert areas. I am glad you enjoyed the wine. Some Schmo wrote: ↑Wed Apr 20, 2022 10:32 pmMy wife and I checked out Walla Walla last summer, so we'd have been relatively close by your house, I suppose. On I-5 near Keizer there is a road sign that announces you are now crossing the 45th parallel. So, I absent-mindedly added 100 miles to that and came up with your directions. Doh!
Sometimes I forget that the Pacific Northwest has an eastern side of the Cascades as well as a western. With people on their respective sides certain that their side is the best. All except for me. I like both sides equally. Except, of course for the Tri cities. Which bears no resemblance to Walla Walla.

dantana, I share your preference for Walla Walla but I remember I think that Dr W hails from the tricities at least in some part so I will not be negative. The tricities have been growing like mad. They may actually become cities instead of the sagebrush hope to be cities that they have been.dantana wrote: ↑Thu Apr 21, 2022 1:29 amhuckelberry wrote: ↑Wed Apr 20, 2022 10:20 pm

Interesting. Yeah, I suppose the mountains will make a difference. I guess I grew up thinking of Washington as rainy and wet, but it's a decent sized state.huckelberry wrote: ↑Thu Apr 21, 2022 1:24 amSome Schmo, last summer we had several extra hot spells but climate maps show us hooking up with the desert to our south in the summer normally. I'm not a wine drinker (although I do like a sip after eating some very sharp cheese - it's amazing). We went to Walla Walla for my wife. She was in heaven. I think there are something like 120+ vineyards in that area? Anyway, a lot, and brands with which she's familiar.I am glad you enjoyed the wine.

some Schmo, west of the Cascade crest rainfall is between 50 and 100 inches a year. East of the crest dries out with rainfall around 8 inches a year down the center of the state. There are more mountains though they are smaller ones to the eastern part of the state so rainfall amounts go up again. That is good for all sorts agriculture. The wine is sort of a new thing, before 1980s wine would have been sort of , whats that? Some Schmo wrote: ↑Thu Apr 21, 2022 1:29 pm

Re: Im confused
In looking about for the perfect climate for year round living, I'm surprised more people aren't in the Rouge river area. Maybe it's because of its isolation and distance from major city hubs. Anyway, Its latitude puts it just below the wet weather patterns of the Pacific Northwest, but above the scorching heat of CA's Redding summers. Yet, it still has the trees and green that many people desire. It's inland enough to miss the coastal rain of Coos Bay, yet still on the west side of the Cascades to be not in the desert of say, Klamath Falls or the desolation of Lakeview. (Similar latitude) And, close enough to the coast to get ones ocean fix in an hour and a half
So, for me, if I had a choice, I'd pick ... Kona.
