You are aware that the Hammurabi Code (secular) predated the 10 Commandments, and but for the first 4 commandments (syncophancy to "god") and respecting one's mother and father, there were corollaries in the Code that predated the 10 Commandments. So, no, religion is not necessary for people to be "good" or "virtuous."

And, as sock pointed out (which you quoted - you did read what you quoted, right?), he added 3 commandments for the benefit of god, not society, and the one about honouring your parents. But that one also is not for the benefit of society: according to the Bible, it benefits the person who obeys. So if we are talking about rules to ensure a civil society, Moses' additions didn't really help, did they?
