Almost the entire developed world has been socialist by conservative American standards for at least three generations now. Western Europe and Canada may not be heaven on Earth but they are doing okay. Would Americans somehow be unable to handle European-style liberalism without slipping straight into tyranny? I would hope that two-hundred and fifty years of devotion to democracy would make a nation less fragile than that.
The thing is, not only have we be “doing okay” but the USA has been the driving force for democracy/freedom/liberty throughout the world. It has been a ‘city on a hill’, so to speak. We haven’t had much of a desire, up until now it seems, to just be okay.
Christianity has been a major player.
It is the healthy mix between classical liberal and conservative values that have got us this far. Some might call these values ‘family values’. I would like to take the optimistic ‘glass half full’ approach, but I’m also of the opinion that we ought to go into the future with our eyes wide open rather than being an ostrich and putting our heads in the sand.
That was the WHOLE point of this thread, at least for me, to bring to our consciousness the fact that freedom isn’t free. It’s something we have to fight for. And there are forces that WOULD curtail freedom/liberty.
Christianity has, on the whole, at least in modern times, been a force for liberty and freedom. Politically, spiritually, and for conscience.
I’m NOT saying that Christianity in the form of church membership/belief is the ONLY answer/option to problems that society has brought upon itself, but I am saying that it is part of the solution. I would hate to see religionists gradually being pushed out of the public square by those that despise and/or have a hatred towards religion or would like to see it take a back seat/second class status.
And there have been worrisome trends along the way that would support the idea that religion, and Christianity in particular, have been under attack.
Socialism in the instances you name, have resulted in ‘Okay’ results thus far. In other instances socialism…and its cousin communism…have not resulted in ‘Okay’.
Communist/socialist party organizations have been very active on American soil for MANY years now. They are well organized and have goals/ideals/ideology that don’t match with those of most Americans.
At least up until now.
