Re: The Trump Criminal Case Megathread
Ken Chesebro filed for a speedy trial for late Oct, 3+ months before the original tentative date in Jan 2024 and Fani Willis said okay, effectively calling his bluff. The judge agreed and now he's alone is set for trial in Oct. He might be cannon fodder to show the rest of the defendants what 5 years in Georgia prison for RICO looks like or he might be looking to break his case loose from the rest so he can cut a deal.

Re: Jim Jordan questioning the timing, I read that RICO cases pretty much have to be proven before charging so the prosecution is ready, and they've done their homework. Which is part of why it took 2.5 years to charge is that they had to do a lot of work, and connect a lot of dots before the could bring the charges they did.
I hear Mark Meadows may be trying to save himself, but I hope that he can only get a reduced sentence. It feels like if the people in the room are able to get away that they will continue to see it as viable to go along, if it succeeds it's good, and if not they can just turn witness to save their own hide.

Jim Jordan is a bomb thrower who would criticize Jesus Christ for taking so long to return if he thought it would hurt Democrats in some way. He would have criticized the timing of the indictments no matter when they were filed.Dwight wrote: ↑Fri Aug 25, 2023 11:31 amRe: Jim Jordan questioning the timing, I read that RICO cases pretty much have to be proven before charging so the prosecution is ready, and they've done their homework. Remember back to January 2021. Law enforcement knew about the insurrection. It also knew about several apparently isolated incidents of pressure being placed on people in key states with regard to vote counts. What no one knew at the time was the existence of a coordinated plan to break the law and steal the election. As various pieces of what turned out to be a conspiracy within the government to overturn the results of the election were investigated, evidence of how these events related to each other emerged. And the conspirators fought tooth and nail to conceal the evidence by invoking lawyer-client and executive privilege. It took time and a ton of work to gather the evidence necessary to bring before the various grand juries. This is, as Dark Brandon would say, a big F-ing deal and the various prosecutors shouldn't be criticized for taking the time to get their ducks in a row before filing unprecedented charges.
