Keep in mind that what the citizens of Ohio did was amend the state's constitution. The Ohio GOP's segment is a non-sequitur. The Constitution Trump's laws, not the other way around. One of the options the Ohio GOP is considering to ignore the will of the people is to pass a law stating that the state judiciary has no jurisdiction over that one portion of the state's Constitution and giving the Republican-controlled legislature the sole jurisdiction to interpret and apply (or, really, not apply) it.

This is 100% anti-American, and should be called out as such. These people are despots with no respect for the people they govern.

If we are to talk in such terms, then when, one might ask, does a woman become a person who no longer has the right to control what goes on in her own body?

And does the moment when the fetus gains the status of "person with a right to life" coincide exactly with the instant when the woman involves loses the right to control what goes on in her own body?

If it does not, how do we resolve the inevitable clash of simultaneous rights between the fetus and the woman involved?

I raise these points to show the sterility of trying to deal with issues like this through an oversimpllfied discourse of rights that ignores the complexity of real-life situations. The UK Abortion Act, 1967, dealt with the problem of when to permit abortion by a combination of term limits, and the need for the consent of two medical practitioners:

Medical termination of pregnancy.

(1)Subject to the provisions of this section, a person shall not be guilty of an offence under the law relating to abortion when a pregnancy is terminated by a registered medical practitioner if two registered medical practitioners are of the opinion, formed in good faith—

(a)that the pregnancy has not exceeded its twenty-fourth week and that the continuance of the pregnancy would involve risk, greater than if the pregnancy were terminated, of injury to the physical or mental health of the pregnant woman or any existing children of her family; or

(b)that the termination is necessary to prevent grave permanent injury to the physical or mental health of the pregnant woman; or

(c)that the continuance of the pregnancy would involve risk to the life of the pregnant woman, greater than if the pregnancy were terminated; or

(d)that there is a substantial risk that if the child were born it would suffer from such physical or mental abnormalities as to be seriously handicapped.

I make no claim that the terms of this act were ideal. But if you want a law to put abortion under reasonable restraints, while allowing it to take place under some circumstances, it might look something like this.

Laws like this are already in place in many states. This is the same sort of approach that Republicans have been working to displace, either via ‘heartbeat’ laws (wherein a fetus with no actual heart, lungs or brain - but with a tiny clump of vibrating proto-muscular tissue - is deemed as the line in the sand), or with complete bans.

If the standards described by the UK Abortion Act we’re already in place within most of the US - but that standard is now under robust attack - then the question is not if Democrats can live with that. Rather, it’s a question of whether or not Republicans can. It has now been demonstrated that Republicans cannot or will not, and the latest line of the same isn’t even stopping at a total ban, but at the use of, or protections for, birth control itself.

Even California - that haven of socialism, libtardery and debauchery - bans abortion past the point of viability. These limits affect more than 10% of the entire US population, given how many folks live in CA alone.
