It's clear that a lot of people over 60 don't think clearly and their reasoning skills decline, as evidenced by this board.
Perhaps people over 75 shouldn't be allowed to own a gun.

Interesting premise given your choice of evidence used to support it. Or are you subtly saying you're even older than we have been led to believe?doubtingthomas wrote: ↑Wed Apr 17, 2024 7:26 pm"Ohio man, 81, fatally shoots Uber driver, 61, after scammers target both of them"

Nope. You, Doc, and others seem to have low reasoning skills. How old are you?

My favorite thing about this isn't that the cohort groupings stop at 30, but that it shows there's a drastic and hugely significant psychosocial maturity gap between 16-21 year olds, and 22-25 year olds, with a growing linear trend with each subsequent age cohort.doubtingthomas wrote: ↑Thu Apr 18, 2024 10:07 pmAdditionally, according to modern science, cognitive skills begin to decline at age 45.

DT, I read the paper you cited. Some questions:Doctor Steuss wrote: ↑Thu Apr 18, 2024 10:16 pmMy favorite thing about this isn't that the cohort groupings stop at 30, but that it shows there's a drastic and hugely significant psychosocial maturity gap between 16-21 year olds, and 22-25 year olds, with a growing linear trend with each subsequent age cohort.doubtingthomas wrote: ↑Thu Apr 18, 2024 10:07 pmAdditionally, according to modern science, cognitive skills begin to decline at age 45.

1) Can you quote the language in the paper that supports your claim that "cognitive skills begin to decline at age 45?"
2) The paper contrasts two different types of development:
In contrasting between "cognitive capacity" and "psychosocial maturity," the paper states:The present study examines two psychological phenomena relevant to legal questions about adolescent maturity: cognitive capacity, which undergirds logical thinking, and psychosocial maturity, which comprises individuals’ ability to restrain themselves in the face of emotional, exciting, or risky stimuli.
Here, the scammers claimed they were holding a relative hostage. Why are you claiming this situation reflects cognitive capacity? One way to think about the difference between these capacities and abilities is to distinguish between “cold” cognition and “hot” cognition. Cold cognition refers to mental processes (such as working memory or response inhibition) employed in situations calling for deliberation in the absence of high levels of emotion (e.g., Figner, Mackinlay, Wilkening, & Weber, 2009). Hot cognition involves mental processes in affectively charged situations where deliberation is unlikely or difficult.
3) Upthread, you said: "Perhaps people over 75 shouldn't be allowed to own a gun."
Who commits more gun violence, 20 year olds or 75 year olds? Consider both totals and rates.

You're using something that happened in Ohio as evidence for a dynamic occurring on THIS BOARD?
Please explain your logic.

Jesus Christ, wrong study.

Do you think psychosocial maturity is influenced a lot by the way society raises kids?Res Ipsa wrote: ↑Thu Apr 25, 2024 5:35 pm2) The paper contrasts two different types of development:

I wouldn't be against the idea of preventing 20 year olds from having a gun.
You have to take into account that 75-year-olds are less likely to be in dangerous situations. I doubt that many 75-year-olds are out on the streets drinking. I suspect that 75-year-olds are way more likely to see danger where there is none. The concern is that 75 year olds who aren't doing anything wrong, may see things that aren't there.

1) You didn’t read either one of these papers.
2) Neither of these papers claims what you say it does.
