Pride Month

Modern western culture celebrates heterosexual attraction in a continuous flood. For one month in the year there will be a few news stories about other kinds of attraction, interspersed in the otherwise unbroken stream of men and women singing about each other and posing for one another. Yet those few exceptions to the overwhelming straight background prompt these indignant harrumphs about how there should also be straight pride.

That's why homophobia is a phobia. It's a wild overreaction to something which is not a threat.

Bill, after so much harsh persecution and being told they are deviant beings, do you begrudge these people the right to show pride in their identity?

The reminds me a little of the headline on a satirical website:

"Black History Month ends. White History Year continues."

Unlike straight people, gay people are forced to continually re-affirm their identity - because it is an identity that all too many people seem to wish to deny them. Straight people don't have that problem (I know, because I am straight and have never had any problem from other people because of that, nor has anybody else I know who is straight).

That is why from time to time gay people want to say "Hey! We're here, and we are what we are. And we are just fine that way". But you seem to have a problem with that. I just can't think why.
