If you're trying to lose weight, eat off someone else's plate since it is their calories and not yours.

Here's the story. I hit the skids. Totally tanked. All the symptoms I ever had returned. That's how I ended up in the ER twice in August to get my heart shocked. No ER this year before that until August. Almost everything I listed here that I had been eating started blowing up my belly. The two ER visits were nuclear with extreme bloating.

I lost all the weight gain that I had. Right at 90 pounds again. The other day I weighed 88 which is still on the low end of normal for me since I am snack size.

I don't remember all dates of what happened. I was riding it out with no end in sight. Anyway, I ended up at the Gastro with a new NP. That PA I disliked so much is gone. The difference between providers was day/night. I went in aiming at SIBO, armed with blood labs from the 2 ER visits, printed information about gastro-cardiac syndrome/Roemheld syndrome. Studies from NIH and one other website from Sanjay Gupta of York Cardiology who was the first person I ever heard describe and name it on youtube years ago.

She listened to my whole entire journey with afib/rvr and the gastro stuff. Reviewed the labs. She actually looked at the studies I bought with me. Listened carefully when I described how Roemheld syndrome works.Then...I showed her an actual photo of my actual bloated belly and she said "Oh no that looks so painful." The Boy said I looked 5 months pregnant that night and that was just one of many nights.

Then she said, "Have you heard of SIBO" and I replied, "YES! That's why I came." She told me she could schedule me for testing but since the situation was so bad that if I didn't want to wait she'd put me on antibiotic treatment if I wanted. And I said, "YES that's exactly what I want."

Apparently this particular antibiotic isn't covered by insurance without pre-authorization from the provider stating that it's medically necessary. A course of this med out of pocket is well over 2K. That was Friday of Labor Day weekend. I remember that because I was dying waiting for it. I forget what day I picked it up...Tuesday following I think.

Where I had been excited about getting it, when I picked it up I got scared. Waited a few days to start it. I've been on it I think 5 days now. It's a 14 day course of treatment of Rifaximin. I still have symptoms but not as extreme. The only side effects I can detect were a sense of calm and sleepiness the first two days. Sometimes brain fog and dizziness. I think it's helping but I've read that people only sense real improvement the week after treatment. If symptoms return, I have to do it all again.

The NP:

1. Ordered me the special antibiotic.
2. Sent me home samples of 2 digestive things. FD gard and IB gard.
3. Was empathetic and listened carefully to everything I shared with her.
4. Didn't rush me.
5. Scheduled a 30 day follow up for later this month.
6. Gave me tissues because I'm telling you I wept when I said I was losing ground.

The PA:

1. Visit one: sent me home with a diet.
2. Visit two: sent me home with a different diet.
3. Last time I saw her was April 11 and she did NOTHING to address the symptoms I had.
4. Could have done everything the NP did for me. But no, she let me suffer until the situation became dire.

SIBO: Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth

The weight loss can be rapid due on account of malnourishment because the bacteria consume your nutrients.

Current foods:

Oatmeal
Non-fat yogurt (2)
Chicken grilled on the little George Foreman with nothing on it whatsoever. (2 x's)
Sweet potatoes with nothing on them whatsoever. (2 x's)

That's all I'm eating now every single day until I feel true improvement.

I didn't feel like talking about any of this until now. Thanks for all who checked in here to see how I'm doing. Hanging in, praying, and taking my meds.

**If you or anyone you know has the symptoms I mentioned (extreme bloating, weight loss, crawly pins and needles sensation, stomach spasms) please refer back to this thread and review. Especially check the name of the antibiotic. Rimaxifin sold under the brand name Xifaxan. It's one that doesn't kill the good bacteria.

Glad to hear you found a more professional person, Jersey Girl. We're thinking of you, sending good thoughts, and are looking forward to hearing more when you're ready. It was a set back, but it sounds like you're already on a better path, so hang in there!!

(at least plain sweet potatoes taste pretty good. Well, at least to me. I'm sure you're tired of them!! We love you! )

Hey. Sending love your way. I am so sorry this happened, but also, a positive has come about because your new person has started the treatment without testing. I really hope that this is the answer to it all. Fingers crossed for massive improvement soon. Sibo certainly would explain the weight loss and difficult weight gain.
