Freedom of speech, because he's a public figure. But I freely admit that it makes me quite nervous, too, and always has.
But if we ban all criticism of the proprietor of mormonstories.com, then we also need to ban all criticism of the proprietor of interpreterfoundation.org. Is this a bridge we want to cross?
There’s a difference between criticising someone for some of the assertions they make, for some of the content they put out etc, and public accusations of serious criminality. Rosebud isn’t criticising the content put out by Mormon Stories, she isn’t criticising what the proprietor of Mormon Stories says. She is making accusations about behind-the-scenes criminal wrongdoing. Obsessively. And she is using this board to do so.
Her behaviour is against one of your own board rules, but you continue to allow it. I suggest you either remove the board rule, or enforce it. But don’t do nothing.
I've been nervous about the Dehlin accusations from the start, but I've allowed them because he uses his name on a public website and is something of a public figure, by his own design. He's a poster here, but doesn't post under his own name, and Rosebud hasn't linked his real name to his user name, so I've allowed it for that reason, too. I've also allowed it in the name of Rosebud's freedom of speech.
To that end, should I remove the "The Rosebud MEGATHREAD" and ban all further accusations of alleged criminal conduct on Dehlin's part, under the auspices that he is a poster here, even if his real name and user name aren't linked?

I have voted "Yes" because her postings repeatedly breach the board rule that says "Do not make threats or take actions to cause another member to feel harassed or fearful for his or her safety "in real life."
For consistencies sake, I also think some of Everybody Wang Chung's unsupported personal accusations about what he alleges Peterson to have done "in real life" wander into a breach of this rule too.
Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.
I am wondering about moving the Rosebud Megathread to either the Telestial forum or Spirit Prison to help preserve documentation in case board member John Dehlin wishes to sue the offending parties. That would retain the Shadesian desire for free speech, but seemingly decrease the board's liability for defamation.
I would be curious about the opinions of the lawyers on this board.
Is there a way to shut it down and preserve the content off of the board should the content ever be subpoenaed?
I’ve often felt by allowing this (in any forum), the board has been an enabler, and this behavior is obviously not going to change. At this point in time, Rosebud does not seem to be a physical threat to herself or others (I am not a mental health professional, however). Maybe doing so would allow her to move on with her life in positive more productive ways.
If Rosebud has evidence of wrongdoing on Dehlin’s part, the appropriate place would be for her to take it up in a court of law.

Hey Shades,
Your eagerness/willingness to hear from the board members is admirable, in my opinion. It speaks to your humility and character.
In my opinion, this is a call that you need to make on your own. Sometimes these calls can be both complex and tough to make, but that's why you get the big bucks. If you had me gun to head, I would say that the first thing you said ("I've been nervous about the Dehlin accusations from the start") strikes me as significant and ought to be given considerable weight as you make a decision.
Lock the thread and put it down in the appropriate forum where it belongs. It should remain an archived document for this board. Put an end to any further discussion and delete any new posts on the subject as they occur.
I don't know what if any liability you or the board has, if none, then I am in favor of the status quo. If there is some, then that is a decision you have to make.

Yes. The thread can be relocated into the Mod Forum. The Mod Forum isn't visible to users.
