I wonder what Hogwarts house the sorting hat puts Hawaiian natives in. Excuse me, I mean I wonder what tribe the Mormon patriarchal blessing puts members of the church there in.

Re: DCP Is An Ugly American Tourist
That most racist of Apostles opined on this subject…
Elder Mark E. Petersen, in his conference message of 1962, says:
The Polynesian Saints are characterized by a tremendous faith. Why do they have this great faith? It is because these people are of the blood of Israel. They are heirs to the promises of the Book of Mormon. God is now awakening them to their great destiny. As Latter-day Saints we have always believed that the Polynesians are descendants of Lehi and blood relatives of the American Indians, despite the contrary theories of other men (Petersen 457).
Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.

I can't quite put my finger on which Mark E. Peterson is more stupid about, history or doctrine..........I Have Questions wrote: ↑Wed Apr 02, 2025 4:18 pmThat most racist of Apostles opined on this subject…Elder Mark E. Petersen, in his conference message of 1962, says:

You mean one of the apostles, with the highest priesthood authority, anointed of Christ, and special witness of such?I Have Questions wrote: ↑Wed Apr 02, 2025 4:18 pmThat most racist of Apostles opined on this subject…Elder Mark E. Petersen, in his conference message of 1962, says:

I can’t believe I ever had any respect for these clown leaders of the LDS church. They ride on a culture of celebrity worship just like Trump does, and the members believe they can do no wrong.

If King Kamehameha had become a Mormon before Joseph Smith was born, the Saints would count that as a Book of Mormon miracle. Dr. Peterson would then sing the praises of Kamehameha and count his existence as higher than the donor NHM (for that altar in the Temple of Sheba).

Firstly I want to state my position so not to cause confusion. If the Hawaiians are happy and celebrate king kamehameha then he clearly did good for them.I Have Questions wrote: ↑Wed Apr 02, 2025 10:23 amGiven Peterson's objections to a nation celebrating a person "guilty" of violent conquest in the formation of a sovereign state, one assumes he also objects to the celebrating Independence Day and Thanksgiving? Presumably he will now avoid visiting Hawaii? Does he renounce himself for daily pledging allegiance to a sovereignty state that was formed the same way 'King Kamehameha I' formed Hawaii? Perhaps he will speak out against Israel's current campaign of ethnic cleansing and refuse to visit and lead tours there? Or are those things somehow different?Everybody Wang Chung wrote: ↑Mon Mar 31, 2025 1:18 amJune 11th is an important Hawaii State holiday. It's the day many Hawaiians honor and respect their greatest ruler/unifier, King Kamehameha the Great. Hawaiians view King Kamehameha and his numerous accomplishments with the same reverence many people view George Washington or Abraham Lincoln.

DCP (who is currently in Hawaii) just posted a very derogatory comment about the Hawaii's most hallowed and honored person. To their credit, several commentors called DCP out on his tone-deaf post.
Quite disrespectful, no? Does it rise to the cruelty of him torturing a cat, as reported by one of his co-travelers during an excursion to the Middle East? Does it rise to the irreverent mockery of him demeaning Jewish religious ceremonies, as also reported by one of his co-travelers during a trip to Israel? You will have to be the judge of that. But it's psychologically fascinating that even vacationing in a tropical paradise seems to inspire despicable behavior in him.
But this does bring the thought about all wars and all shifts of territory from the beginning of time and even today with Russia trying to take land. A lot of Russians will agree with wanting to take surrounding lands and if successful, may even in centuries time praise him as a great leader. But we know history isn't as we know it. What we are taught is the perspective our countries want us to believe. We only see what is shown to us and unless we are in it at the time at the very front of it all we truly don't know intentions and what it all means.

Re: DCP Is An Ugly American Tourist
Today Peterson gives us this little snippet to digest…
Peterson is (wilfully?) xenophobic at times. He’s deliberately one-eyed at times. And he is definitely lazy, and knee jerk, when it comes to research and contemplation about a situation. The Hawaiians deserve a little more respect than Peterson is willing to give them.
Which is interesting given his pearl clutching about Hawaiians celebrating King Kamehameha day. Reagan, whom Peterson is “proud” to be associated with, did a deal with Iran whereby they didn’t release American hostages under the incumbent President, but waited until he was elected so that he could claim a victory in their release. It became known as “The October Surprise”I’ve also been thinking about Ronald Reagan and his views on free trade. I was happy and proud to be a Republican when Ronald Reagan was president, and I wish he were still around.
And do we need to mention the Iran-Contra thing? The 1980 October Surprise theory refers to the claim that members of Ronald Reagan's presidential campaign covertly negotiated with Iranian leaders to undermine incumbent President Jimmy Carter by delaying the release of 66 American hostages detained in Iran. The hostage situation, which began when Iranian revolutionaries seized the U.S. embassy in Tehran, was one of the biggest news stories of 1980, and Carter's inability to resolve it is widely believed to have contributed to his loss.

Re: DCP Is An Ugly American Tourist
I think IWMP understood Peterson's point. It was about conquers. Perhaps a further look might consider if in the past free trade was helped by subjugation of fighting factions.(not a simple yes or no I think)
I am happy that Peterson rejects Trump's unprincipled policies. I voted against both Nixon and Reagan and did not like either while president. There have been many times I have thought that compared to Trump both were good statesmen, relatively honorable who cared about the country. I find Peterson's comparison a positive thing even if in general I do not share his political or religious views. I see no ŕeason to fear seeing some particulars where I would share his view.

Yes, it was about conquerors. The problem is how inconsistent his objections are. He has posted repeatedly about, for example, Brigham Young, trying to reframe and somehow excuse those 'conquering' and reprehensible behaviors. But somehow BY gets a pass because of all the good he did.huckelberry wrote: ↑Fri Apr 04, 2025 5:43 pmI think IWMP understood Peterson's point. It was about conquers...

It's gotten pretty ridiculous and that's what some people are commenting on, in my opinion. He probably plagiarized his posts about Hawaii anyway (as he's done so frequently in the past on topics of science and travel), so in a way it's no more ludicrous than a gymnast here posting A.I. that clearly refutes himself.
