Re: LDS Church urges members to call out racism in their congregations
I would want to meet a group of these people that have what I would consider to be strange beliefs, get to know them, and try and understand where they are coming from. I think that I would then be able to gauge their mental stability and acuity. People have believed strange things throughout history and yet day to day they go about their lives and do what humans do. Flat-earthers included.I Have Questions wrote: ↑Wed Apr 23, 2025 6:46 amBumping for MG’lyI Have Questions wrote: ↑Tue Apr 22, 2025 2:51 pmYou think people who believe in a flat earth are dumb and stupid? Dumb and stupid? I doubt it. Otherwise, how would they survive?
I think on a certain level, however, we are all dumb and stupid when it comes to certain things.
Even you!
At the end of the day I think that most people are doing the best they can with what they've got. That doesn't necessarily make them dumb or stupid...or smart. It's not like they are walking around saying to themselves, boy, I'm dumb and stupid. I take that back, there are some that fall into that trap. I saw that when I was in the classroom as a teacher. The challenge was to get kids to realize that we ALL are blessed with certain abilities and talents and also have other things that we struggle with but can overcome to some extent with hard work.
On the other hand there are those that see or set themselves as being the brightest lights on the block or in the room. That might be even more dangerous, in a sense, than those that get down on themselves for feeling as though they aren't too bright.
I've experienced conversation time after time with some folks on this board sight unseen except for what they say and how they respond and tried to determine whether or not they are dumb and stupid...or smart. It's difficult. The thing is, like I said, most people are doing the best they can with what they've got...including those I talk to here.
It's difficult to judge sight unseen except for what I observe through their writing. There are times, however, when I have to bite my tongue (as far as the thoughts I entertain) in regards to some, of what appear to be, dumb and stupid things people say and post. But again, people are doing the best they can with what they've got.
Important to remember. I need to remember.
I can't and/or shouldn't call someone dumb or stupid when they're doing the best they can with what they've got. Although, just like you, I have a tendency to look at folks, here and elsewhere, and say to myself, whoa baby, what planet did they come from?! But then I also realize others might be thinking the same of me as one that subscribes to supporting activity and participation in the church.
Some would think that this might be the mark of a crazy person. I see that come through/across from time to time.
Regards,
MG

Just as a reminder, the pain mg is feeling was introduced by him:
But of course he has now been offended by his own conclusion multiple times in this thread, just so he can cause a scene. Vintage mental.
This was in response to comment about beliefs. NO ONE but mentalgymnast has equated an opinion about beliefs with the belief that Mormons are "dumb and stupid."

I'm perfectly aware of what I said and why I said it in response to the previous post.Marcus wrote: ↑Thu Apr 24, 2025 2:19 amJust as a reminder, the pain mg is feeling was introduced by him:This was in response to comment about beliefs. No intention of making a scene.

So why did you make the judgement that Marcus’s response made Mormons, according to you, look dumb and stupid like flat earthers, etc.?MG 2.0 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 23, 2025 11:20 pmI would want to meet a group of these people that have what I would consider to be strange beliefs, get to know them, and try and understand where they are coming from. Your immediate labelling of others that hold beliefs different to you as “dumb and stupid” is why the Church still has a problem with racism.
Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.

Noted. You were an apologist for a belief system that includes magic rocks, so I’d say your response lacks some self awareness, at least on face value.Philo Sofee wrote: ↑Wed Apr 23, 2025 12:44 amYes, I do. It’s classic MG’ly. Taking offence and calling out a statement only he has made.Marcus wrote: ↑Thu Apr 24, 2025 2:19 amJust as a reminder, the pain mg is feeling was introduced by him:This was in response to comment about beliefs. Re: LDS Church urges members to call out racism in their congregations
In terms of the thread topic, I found the following about the “Race and the Priesthood” gospel topics essay rather illuminating…
Why haven’t the First Presidency attached their names to these online statements about race? Why haven’t they been announced or launched with any fanfare? Why haven’t they been slipped “quietly in the night” onto the website without members being alerted to their presence? No announcement, no letter over the pulpit, no mention at General Conference. Once again we have the Church not practicing what it preaches. It’s as if they wanted nobody to notice so they could pretend it had been there all along.
If Oaks and his colleagues really want to tackle racism, why isn’t General Conference the platform to do it?It was neither signed nor penned by the governing First Presidency, nor has it been mentioned, alluded to, or footnoted in speeches by LDS authorities at the faith's semiannual General Conferences.
