I see you’ve hidden a “link and run” within your message (bolded). Can you explain what’s behind the link and why you think it’s worthy of being bookmarked?MG 2.0 wrote: ↑Sat Jun 14, 2025 12:10 amI don't know much about this Boylan fellow you're all dissing in this thread, but I do know that the person he had on, Kent Jackson, is a respected scholar that spent his career at BYU although I don't think he had the beard while there.drumdude wrote: ↑Sat Jun 07, 2025 11:52 pmhttps://www.youtube.com/live/lQ0pi0IPR2U
Dear lord, Bobby’s videos have become comically bad. I started at 55:00 in and it’s a complete crap show lol.![]()
Through your link I am now aware of the following website:
https://www.youtube.com/@churchhistorym ... ast/videos
That looks like one to bookmark.
As for the books in back of Kent Jackson...any of you have a bookshelf full of books like that and can make the claim to be a scholar in the same class as Br. Jackson?
Time for cut and paste, show us pictures of your bookshelves! Prove that you're not the 'toss in a corner' kind of person that Boylan is.Show you're a real man, like Kent Jackson. For you women, this applies to you also.
If you can show your bookshelves...maybe you can also make a claim to be a scholar!
Everything worked right in the video up until 55:00 minutes. There were some technical problems at that point. I don't know why you would call the presentation before that a "complete crap show"???
Regards,
MG

Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.

I’m working on my Thesis and don’t have any bookshelves. Guess I’m stupidMsJack wrote: ↑Sun Jun 15, 2025 2:59 pmScholarship isn't measured by books on bookshelves, it's measured by things like books published with academic presses and peer-reviewed articles.MG 2.0 wrote: ↑Sat Jun 14, 2025 12:10 amAs for the books in back of Kent Jackson...any of you have a bookshelf full of books like that and can make the claim to be a scholar in the same class as Br. No one here would deny Kent P. Jackson is a legitimate scholar of religion and ancient studies. He has peer-reviewed publications, including with journals that aren't predominantly BYU / LDS apologetics journals.
Boylan has two book reviews and one research note, both with journals that predominantly produce LDS apologetics. He puts out a vast amount of content, but it's all self-publishing or self-promotion. He tries to present himself as extremely knowledgeable and a scholar, but hasn't done the professional work to support that claim.
I personally think he's intelligent and probably capable of real scholarship, but he seems emotionally unbalanced, and his online antics and lack of professionalism hurt his credibility.

I don't see the connection between that and Kent Jackson's library in his own home/office?Tapir Rodeo wrote: ↑Mon Jun 16, 2025 10:41 pmThe library has the most books so whoever own the library must be really really extra big smart! Re: Ask Boylan Anything
My collection of books has been growing for decades now. I might be embarrassed by the number so I will not count them. I am not very good at getting rid of old books on my self so there are too many of them.
But I am not a scholar, make no such claims so none of you need bow. I may sometimes stumble into a bit of knowledge. I may on occasion stumble into something close to a thought and share it. But as I am no scholar you all are quite free to take or leave my mental stumbles as you wish.

The Third Legate of the Calesandri Hulencense landing on the Backyard Professor's driveway to see his library was no accident.

Do not EVER "link-and-run." If you post a link to something, always explain what's at the other end of the link, why it's important, and what you hope other readers / viewers learn from it. RULE OF THUMB: If it's not worth your time to describe it, then it's not worth our time to click on it.
To come into compliance with the rule, please describe your link in the above-listed ways.

I don't see why you think the number of books someone owns has anything to do with their status as a scholar.MG 2.0 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 17, 2025 3:08 amI don't see the connection between that and Kent Jackson's library in his own home/office?Tapir Rodeo wrote: ↑Mon Jun 16, 2025 10:41 pmThe library has the most books so whoever own the library must be really really extra big smart! Re: Ask Boylan Anything
That's not what I was really saying. I'm saying that with a person/scholar such as Kent Jackson, we know he is a scholar by the fact of his output in research and knowledge in his field. A video that shows part of his library behind him only lends credence to that fact. Same as when Philo, on this board, produces his videos (Backyard Professor) in his home with his library right behind him we have a pretty good indication that he is well read and an amateur scholar.Tapir Rodeo wrote: ↑Tue Jun 17, 2025 3:59 pmI don't see why you think the number of books someone owns has anything to do with their status as a scholar.
Here on this board, however, it is really hard to know who is and who isn't a scholar in the sense that Kent Jackson or the Backyard Professor is.
Some may come across as such, but it is still difficult to know the breadth and depth of any one poster's background. Kishkumen may be an exception. There may be one or two others...but it's difficult to know for sure.
My guess is that there are more than a few scholar 'wannabees' that post here.
